Express by Holiday Inn Cardiff Bay is pleased to announce that it has succeeded in having 5 new homes built and completed for displaced families paid for by the generous donations raised through the hotel at the time of the disaster. Through the charitable work of Embassy of Man, funds were mainly generated during the weekend of the Tsunami relief pop concert held at the Millennium Stadium in January 2005. This included all hotel proceeds from the weekend as well as donations from guests at Express by Holiday Inn Cardiff Bay and our three other sister hotels - Express by Holiday Inn Burton-upon-Trent, Wimbledon South and Swindon City Centre. Once the donations had been collected, one of the trustees for Embassy of Man travelled to Sri Lanka to ascertain the biggest needs and, as part of the • Disaster.... • Building.... rebuilding process of a community and country severely affected by the Tsunami, committed to build new homes through the charity. In close partnership with Hirdaramani Trust, five families with small children who were occupying a 10x10 meter room with common facilities during the past two years, were given a new life and new hope. “Embassy of Man prides itself in being part of the rebuilding of Sri Lanka, albeit on a small scale. I am pleased to report that our involvement has made a significant and very positive difference in the lives of those who would benefit from a new home. The Trustees would like to thank everyone who partnered with us. We are especially grateful for the generous time and effort afforded us by Mahesh Hirdaramani and Nihal Jinadasa from Hirdaramani Trust,” explained Minhaz Manji, Chairman of the Trustees. • Hope! Talking Microwaves A warm thank you to Embassy of Man who have generously funded two talking microwaves for young people who are blind or partially sighted with multiple disabilities at SeeAbility. Eight tenants have recently moved into Windmill Court, a supported living project in Honiton, Devon, which offers the opportunity for young people with complex disabilities to live more independently as active members of their community. The talking microwaves enable the young people to participate more fully in meal preparation without having to rely completely on support staff. The specialist microwaves 'speak' the times and settings. Mike (one of the tenants) really enjoys using his talking microwave, although for him there is one disadvantage! The first ever party arranged by our staff at Express by Holiday Inn London Wimbledon South for 30 Down's Syndrome children brought smiles to everyone's faces. At our Express by Holiday Inn Cardiff Bay, the children from Butetown Youth Pavillion arrived promptly at 2pm and wasted no time in finding the dance floor, playing party games and munching away on the party food. Pupils from The Fountains Special Needs School (formerly Crown School) were our guests at the Express by Holiday Inn Burton-upon-Trent's party. An afternoon of fun and laughter was made perfect by creative entertainers, Molly and Max dolls kindly donated by InterContinental Hotels Group, goody bags, music and a chance to speak to Santa! We did not forget the children in the GW Hospital Swindon but hired an entertainer for a few hours, bringing some festive fun to the children and hospital staff alike by joke-telling, balloon modelling and handing out gifts. Through your generosity we could make Christmas extra special. Thank you! • Wimbledon’s Party: Children in good spirits! 1000 households Receive Food in Malawi Making a tangible difference where it matters most… Saving lives! When one of our sponsors requested that his donation of £20,000 be utilised in Malawi,Embassy of Man immediately requested the help of a UK charity, Global Angels (www.globalangels.org), partnering with JAM and World Vision, to honour this request. Our charity contributed to one of World Vision's existing projects of feeding thousands of people in Kasiya, Kapyanga and part of Chamama. The food security programme provides one bag of maize per month to families keeping orphans, malnourished children, widows, HIV/AIDS patients, chronically ill patients and the elderly. With our help, World Vision could provide food to 1000 households. Finances - Embassy of Man strive to help in a tangible way wherever it is needed locally and internationally and we are grateful for every penny donated which enables us to do exactly that. So far this year we have donated a range of goods: fruit for the homeless at London King's Cross, raffle prizes to two hospices and Cancer Research UK in Cardiff and supporting the efforts of Rhys Daniels Trust. We also donated pillows to Crisis at Wimbledon, communication equipment to Roundabout at Burton, safety leaflets to pupils at King William St Primary School, Swindon, and even finished five homes for tsunami victims in Sri Lanka. Thank you for enabling us to really make a difference.
