Gymnasts earn way back to state
Defending champion Bull Dogs hope to peak in final meet of season
Déjà vu all over again.
That would be quite all right for the 2017 Columbus North gymnastics team.
A year ago, the Bull Dogs put everything together for a near-perfect performance at the 2016 IHSAA gymnastics State Finals – claiming the team state title
with Claire Thompson capturing individual crowns in the all-around as well as on
the uneven parallel bars and balance beam. Thompson, Ashley Holliday and thensenior Katrina May all excelled in the event.
This year, carrying an unbeaten record and coming off the championship
of the Columbus East Regional, coaches Sandy Freshour and Bob Arthur and their
charges would be delighted with a repeat of their 2016 effort.
“This was a squeak-through,” Freshour said after the regional, noting the
Bull Dogs edged Bloomington South and Columbus East. “We had great practice
(March 2), and within the coaching staff, we thought the kids would be a lot more
confident. We didn’t perform our best. It’s nice when we can still win not performing our best because I think that inspires the kids that we can do a good job.”
Despite a some good-some bad evening, Thompson won the bars (9.675),
beam (9.725) and the all-around (season-best 38.225) at the regional, while Holliday
captured the vault (matching her season best of 9.750). Holliday was second in the
all-around (37.075), and freshman Sami Heathcote tied for ninth in the all-around
(35.700), including a season-best 9.450 on floor exercise.
Junior Kaitlyn Calandro and freshmen Alayne Davis and Ashley Niebrugge
also contributed to the 111.050 team score at the regional.
History would suggest that that the Bull Dogs will be at their best for state.

Boys Basketball: Bull Dogs conclude 15-9 after close sectional setback
Things did not finish the way anyone wanted, but there is
no doubt that 2016-17 was a season of tremendous progress for the
Columbus North boys basketball team.
Overcoming various injuries and other circumstances that
cost key players several games, the Bull Dogs put together a 15-9
campaign that was oh-so-close to something special.
Columbus North led Bloomington South after three quarters in its first-round sectional game, only to ultimately fall 46-42
to the Panthers in a game that could have gone the other way. It
just didn’t, but there was no fault in the Bull Dogs’ effort.
“It was a great basketball game,” CN coach Paul Ferguson
told The Republic after the sectional setback. “We held the lead for
awhile, and I’m really proud of my guys. I thought they played a
heck of a basketball game.”
Ferguson’s crew played its best ball over the final month
of the season, which included a 57-47 victory over Hamilton Southeastern and a 69-48 triumph on Senior Night over Bloomington
North. CN also posted decisions over East Central (47-35), Franklin
(59-46) and Seymour (56-39) while dropping a regular-season game
to Bloomington South (40-33) and falling to Center Grove (54-42).
In the sectional game, the Bull Dogs drew even at 37 near
the midpoint of the final period when Bloomington South went on
ON THE ATTACK: Junior Trey Vincent averaged 5.6
a 5-0 run. Senior Zach Green cut the deficit to two with a 3-pointer
points, 3.5 assists and 1.2 steals for the 2016-17 Bull Dogs.
and junior Trey Vincent made it 44-42 with a late layup. But Panthers junior Chance Coyle sank two last-second free throws to account for the final score. Senior Alex King led the Bull Dogs with 16 points
and five rebounds. Senior Ethan Mitchell added six points and five rebounds, while Green and Vincent each had five points.
For the season, King tallied team-best averages of 18.3 points and 7.3 rebounds. Green offered support with averages of 8.5 points
and 3.3 rebounds, while senior Nathan VanDeventer netted 6.8 points and Vincent provided 5.6 points and team bests of 3.5 assists and 1.2
steals. Mitchell and junior Jaylen Flemmons each contributed 5.0 points, while sophomore Trenton Kelly chipped in 4.5 points and senior
Stephon Peters-Smith averaged 4.0 points and 4.2 rebounds.
“I’m very pleased with what we did this year,” Ferguson said. “I thought we grew as a program. It just hurts right now because we
wanted to take that next step to playing and potentially winning a sectional championship, and we didn’t get there.”

Girls Basketball: Bull Dogs finish in ‘final four’ for third straight year
The Columbus North girls’ basketball
team saved its best for last.
After an up-and-down regular season
was followed by a sixth consecutive sectional
title, the Bull Dogs arguably put together their
two best games of the season in the regional –
a 66-50 victory over Evansville Central in the
semifinal round and a 49-45 triumph over host
Bedford North Lawrence in the final. Seniors
Ashlyn Huffman, Maliah Howard-Bass and
Imani Guy each excelled in the regional.
In the semistate against Pike, CN recovered from a 12-point second-quarter deficit
OH HAPPY DAY: Members of the Columbus North girls basketball team

went ahead nine in the fourth quarter, but the
Bull Dogs again rallied to close within 51-49 on a Huffman basket with 44 seconds remaining. Columbus North followed with a stop and
called timeout with 15 seconds to go with a chance to tie – or win – the game.
Off a sideline inbound, Howard-Bass dribbled hard to right off a screen by Huffman. The plan called for Guy to then screen Huffman, and Howard-Bass to pass to Huffman for a potential 3-point winner. However, the Pike defender knocked Huffman down when she ran
into the initial screen. At that point, Howard-Bass put up the best shot she could, a twisting 3-point attempt that was on line but just a bit
short. Pike rebounded, CN fouled and the Red Devils hit 1-of-2 free throws. The Bull Dogs had 0.8 of a second to go the full court; they got
the ball in, but Huffman’s desperation three-quarter-court attempt was well short and CN’s attempt at a third consecutive State Finals appearance was thwarted.
The ending did not negate the team’s outstanding play to finish in the “final four” of Class 4A for a third consecutive season. Howard-Bass, Guy and Huffman were primary contributors with respective scoring averages of 16.9, 9.5 and 9.0. Howard-Bass added 4.4 rebounds, 2.3 assists and a team-best 3.3 steals. Guy also tallied 6.8 rebounds and 3.3 blocks, while Huffman provided 2.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists.
Junior Jenna Borger (5.2 points), junior Kenzie Patberg (4.8 points, 3.4 assists), freshman Tessa Lomax (4.5 points, 4.1 rebounds),
sophomore Nadia Lomax (3.7 points) and junior Liz Tynan (2.7 points) also had key roles on the 21-8 squad.
“Our players showed a lot of determination and grit and decided they didn’t want to lose,” CN coach Pat McKee told The Republic.
“We competed at a very high level for a stretch and got a lead. Unfortunately we didn’t get enough separation. At some point, we needed one
more play.”

Thompson scored a seasonbest 9.725 to claim a blue ribbon on the balance beam. She also captured the uneven parallel bars with a 9.675. Thompson was second on
vault with a 9.625 and ninth on floor exercise with a 9.200.
“I feel a lot better than I did at sectional,” Thompson told The Republic after her regional performance. “I can fix a few things. On
floor, I had a little mess-up, but other than that, I’m pretty happy.”
CN senior Ashley Holliday was second in the all-around with a 37.075, a score that included a 9.750 and first-place on vault. She also was second on bars with a 9.575, second on beam with a 9.400 and 23 rd on floor with an 8.350.
Bull Dogs freshman Sami Heathcote tied for ninth in the all-around with a 35.700. She scored a season-best 9.450 for sixth place on
floor. Heathcote also tied for 10th on bars with an 8.725, finished 15th on beam with an 8.700 and tied for 17 th on vault with an 8.825.
Freshman Alayne Davis placed 18th on bars (8.400), freshman Ashley Niebrugge finished 22 nd on floor (8.400) and junior Kaitlyn
Calandro was 20th on vault (8.625) and 29th on beam (7.100) to complete the Columbus North results.
Columbus North is the defending team state champion, and Thompson is the defending individual state champion on bars, beam and
all-around. Holliday was individual state champ on bars in 2015.
In the sectional on Feb. 24, Holliday won two events and the all-around title to lead the Columbus North to its fifth straight crown,
ninth in 10 years and 18th title overall. Holliday posted an all-around score of 37.875 en route to help the Bull Dogs to a team total of 111.875
in that round, 1.3 points better than runner-up Bloomington South.
Holliday took first on vault by tying her season-best 9.750 and claimed the balance beam with a score of 9.450. She also tied with
Thompson for second on uneven parallel bars with 9.625 points and tied for 11 th on floor exercise with a 9.050.
Thompson was second in the all-around with a 37.625. Her results included a second on vault with a season-best 9.675, a second on
floor with a 9.425 and a 10th on beam with an 8.900 in addition to her sharing second on bars. Heathcote finished fifth in the all-around with a
36.375. She placed fourth on vault (9.400), fifth on floor (9.250), ninth on beam (8.900) and tied for 13 th on bars (8.825).
Davis tied for seventh on vault (season-best 9.100), placed 17th on floor (8.850) and tied for 26 th on bars (7.725). Also, junior Kaitlyn
Calandro was 21st on beam (8.150).
In the Conference Indiana meet on Feb. 18 at Bloomington South, Holliday set one meet record, equaled meet marks in two other areas and tied her own season-best performances in two events in leading the Columbus North to the team championship.
Holliday established a meet record of 9.825 points in the floor exercise en route to an all-around score of 38.275, a season-best mark
that tied the meet record she had set a year ago. She also tied the meet record by matching her season best of 9.750 in winning the vault, a record that Holliday shares with former Lawrence Central athlete Ashley Jacob. Jacob achieved that score in 2003 and 2004; Holliday now has
done so in 2016 and 2017.
Holliday's effort helped the Bull Dogs amass a season-best 112.900 points to capture the CI team crown for the fifth year in a row
and the 13th time in 20 seasons of competition. Holliday – who won the CI all-around title as a freshman, junior and senior – also won the uneven parallel bars events by matching her season-best score of 9.400. In addition, she scored a 9.300 on balance beam, good for a tie for third
place in that event.
Thompson won the beam with a 9.550 and placed second in the all-around with a season-best 38.175. She also was second on vault
with a season-best 9.550, second on bars with a 9.375 and second on floor with a season-best 9.700. Heathcote placed third in the all-around
with a 36.450. She was third on vault with a season-best 9.500, tied for third on beam with a season-best 9.300, placed fifth on floor with a
9.325 and finished ninth on bars with an 8.325.
Holliday, Thompson and Heathcote were joined on the all-Conference Indiana squad by Khloe Dykes of Franklin Central plus Catherine McGibbon and Ashlyn DeMoss of Bloomington South.

Track: Burton, Perry, Tennyson and distance crew to lead Bull Dogs
With two indoor meets already in the books, Columbus North track coach Lou Sipe is optimistic about his 2017 Bull Dogs.
Headlined by senior sprinter/jumper Mitchell Burton, senior hurdler Triston Perry, senior thrower Coleman Tennyson and a capable
distance crew, the Bull Dog boys figure to compete well throughout the season. And the CN girls, led by senior Rachel Brougher in distance
events, will strive to give their best in every meet.
Burton placed fifth at state in the long jump last season and had a personal best of 23 feet, 2½ inches to win the sectional. Perry was
23rd at state in the 110-meter high hurdles, while Burton plus junior Jaylen Flemmons and junior Cortez Bandy comprised three legs of a
4x100 relay that was 21st in the state meet. For the girls, Brougher placed 24 th at state in the 3,200, while junior Kiersten Ballard and junior
Arig Tong give the Bull Dogs half of a 4x800 unit that placed 26 th at state last time.
In the opening indoor meet last week hosted by Bloomington South, Burton won the 60 meters in 7.18 seconds, the long jump at 224½ and was joined by Bandy, junior J.D. Harris and Perry on the winning 4x200 in 1:34.01.
Other CN winners in the eight-school event were senior Elijah Brooks, who claimed the 3,200 in 9:58.06, junior Maura VanDeventer, who captured the girls’ 60 hurdles in 9.83, and senior Alec Embry, senior Justin Spoon, sophomore Sam Horak and junior Joel Carroll
with a time of 8:44.04 in the 4x800.
At the HSR Qualifier last Saturday, Tennyson was second in the shot (51-9), senior Hunter Wolford fourth in the shot (49-0) and
Kleinhenz tied for third in the pole vault (12-6). Also, junior Jahna Smiley tied for fourth in the girls’ high jump by clearing 4-10.
CN competes indoors in the Bloomington North Invitational on Wednesday, outdoors against Whiteland on March 22 and in the indoor Hoosier State Relays on March 25 at Indiana University to close out the month.
Boys Golf: Turner headlines a cast seeking to advance to state meet
The Columbus North boys’ golf team returns an experienced cast, and coach Doug Bieker is looking for a strong season.
Senior Bryce Turner is the top holdover after averaging 77.64 strokes in 14 18-hole rounds for a squad that placed ninth in the Providence Regional last season. He figures to be supported by senior Spencer Fairbanks (80.64), sophomore Drew Smith (81.50), senior Matt
Vorndran (82.07), senior Zach Schiavello (86.00) and sophomore Henry Kiel (88.00).
Several other players vie to earn a spot in the team’s top unit.
The Bull Dogs generally played well late last season. Their finishes included a third-place effort in the Conference Indiana meet, a
307-318 dual meet victory over Columbus Est, a fifth-place finish at 311 in the Providence Invitational, a 306 that was good for the team title
in the Shelbyville Invitational and 309 to place second in the Greensburg Sectional. They shot a 320 in the regional.
The 2017 season opens on April 1 in the Seymour Invitational at Shadowood Golf Course. Other important early-season meets include the Hall of Fame Invitational on April 8 at Rock Hollow, the Center Grove Invitational on April 15 at Hickory Stick and the Bedford
North Lawrence Invitational on April 29 at Otis Park.
Girls Tennis: Smith, Sanders & Co. looking to excel again in 2017
Five veteran holdovers figure to make the Columbus North girls’
tennis team a capable squad in 2017 for coach Kendal Hammel.
With a unit paced by senior Aubrey Smith and junior Madelyn
Sanders, the Bull Dogs are hopeful they can build off a 19-7 season from
a year ago that included a trip to the IHSAA State Finals.
Smith posted a 17-7 record despite missing some matches with a
preseason injury, going 13-6 at No. 1 singles, 3-1 at No. 2 singles and 1-0
at No. 3 singles. She was chosen honorable mention all-state last time, and
would like to do even better this season.
Sanders went 21-3 last season, 2-1 at No. 2 singles and 19-2 at
No. 3 singles. She also was honorable mention all-state, and she also has
higher aspirations this season.
Other key holdovers are sophomore Shweta Srinivasan, junior
Yijiang Zhao and senior Hannah Shoemaker.
Srinivasan was 19-7 at No. 2 doubles last season, while Zhao had
a combined mark of 17-9 – 0-1 at No. 3 singles, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles and
11-3 when paired with Srinivasan at No. 2 doubles. Shoemaker went 13-13
overall – 0-1 at No. 3 singles, 5-10 at No. 1 doubles and 8-2 at No. 2 doubles.
The Bull Dogs open their season on April 4 with a home match
against Center Grove. Regular-season highlights include competing in
the Floyd Central Invitational on April 8, the Jeffersonville Invitational
on April 14-15, the Confence Indiana Tournament on May 6 and dual
matches at North Central on April 19 and at Carmel on May 9.

Baseball: Trinkle set to lead Bull Dogs after all-state season as junior
Senior Cooper Trinkle returns to headline the Columbus
North baseball team as it strives to build on a 17-11 season from
a year ago.
Trinkle, an infielder, was chosen Class 4A first-team
all-state by the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association after hitting .416 with six doubles, two triples, a team-high
six home runs and sharing the team lead with 27 RBIs.
Other key returnees include junior infielder Tyler Finke,
who hit a team-best .426 with three doubles and 11 RBIs; senior
catcher Nolan Wetherald, who hit .333 with three doubles and
eight RBIs; and senior outfielder Wade Rankin, who hit .316
with five doubles, two triples and 12 RBIs.
All four players are expected to step up as the Bull Dogs
graduated three four-year players in Collin Lollar (.422, nine
doubles, two triples, four HRs, 27 RBIs), Canaan Baum (.333,
five doubles, one HR, 15 RBIs) and Bryce McDaniel (.329,
five doubles, two HRs, 22 RBIs).
“We’ll have a different look to our team,” said CN
coach Ben McDaniel, whose team opens its schedule on April 1
with a doubleheader at Franklin. “We will look to rely on defense, pitching and speed.”
Junior Jake Petrusky and sophomore Parker Maddox
are the top returning pitchers. Petrusky was 6-2 last season with
a 2.19 earned run average while striking out 25 batters in 44.1
innings. Maddox went 2-4 with a .642 ERA and fanned 17 hitters
in 24.0 innings.
The coach made a point to mention Trinkle’s leadership
throughout the offseason.
“Cooper’s work ethic and dedication has been better
than any senior we’ve ever had,” McDaniel said. “He’s worked
very hard, gotten others to work hard and we are hopeful that
effort pays off.”
The Bull Dogs’ first home game will be April 3 against
East Central, and the team follows by playing four games over
two days on April 7-8 in the Super Prep Invitational in Louisville.
Conference Indiana divisional play begins on April 11 against
Perry Meridian, and the Conference Indiana Tournament will be
May 13. The team will compete in the Indy Invitational on May 20
at North Central as another season highlight.
TEAM LEADER: Senior Cooper T rinkle has served as a
leader on and off the field for Columbus North baseball.
The infielder was chosen first-team all-state in 2016.
Softball: New faces abound as Bull Dogs expect to field a young lineup
New is the theme for the 2017 Columbus North softball team.
A new coach in Ron McDonald and a plethora of new faces on the diamond as only four players return who saw varsity action from
last season’s 9-16 squad.
The top holdover is senior pitcher Madisyn Prince, but she suffered an knee injury in the offseason and still is working her way back
to form. She has been cleared to hit, but she has not yet been cleared to pitch or play in the field. Prince compiled a 6-10 record with a 2.63
earned run average with 85 strikeouts in 93.0 innings in 2016. Prince hit .212 with five RBIs.
The only other returning starter is sophomore Bailey Lofton, who played both first base and third base. Lofton hit .274 with five doubles, one home run and 11 RBIs last time. Other returnees include sophomore Jenna Fath, who hit .375 in limited varsity time, and senior outfielder Kaitlin Panning.
Several freshman figure to earn spots in McDonald’s lineup. Among those vying for time are Sierra Norman, Brooke Bruin, Brittany
Richenbaugh and Haley Medve.
“This looks to be a season of building and growth,” McDonald said. “We hope to build a foundation where we can get stronger and
stronger over each ensuing season.”
The team opens its season with a home doubleheader on March 25 against South Dearborn. The first road game is March 29 at Silver
Creek, and regular-season highlights include the Brown County Invitational on April 15, the Center Grove Invitational on April 22 and the
Conference Indiana Tournament on May 13.
