Norfolk Plains Film Society
2016 Program (as confirmed December 2015)
Attached is the program of movies confirmed for screening in 2016. We have only included
those films for which we have screening rights approved and booked. Next year, we are
planning to obtain four films from the Screen Loans Collection of National Film and Sound
Archives (NFSA). While their policy is to hold older films of significance with an Australian
connection, they still have copies of a few other older classics, including “Casablanca”, our
January film. The NFSA lend us the DVD of the movie and we pay a fee to cover other costs.
We do not have our own copy of these DVDs and our screening will be the only chance for
members to see the movie.
We still have a few gaps in our program. Finding the DVDs and non-theatrical rights for
some older films can be a difficult and drawn out business. We had hoped to show
“Babette’s Feast”, “The Gods must be Crazy” and “The Girl in the Café”. One distributor is
hoping to pick up the rights for “Babette’s Feast” in the near future, but we cannot find a
rights holder for the other two.
The Australian Council of Film Societies (ACOFS) has negotiated a deal with most Australian
Rights holders for smaller member film societies to pay reduced rates for non-theatrical
screening rights. As time goes on, sales of DVDs drop off, they are no longer printed and
eventually the local rights holders either relinquish or lose the rights. Sometimes they pass
to smaller distributors along the way and these can take time to track down. Eventually,
they are only available from overseas rights holders for at least three or four times the local
rate. Australian films are often picked up by the NFSA at this stage.
Meeting Date: the second Friday of the month.
Venue: Supper Room of the Longford Town Hall.
Time: 7.20pm for 7.30pm movie, followed by supper.
