WELCOME TO DESERTFEST 2017
Last year we had our 5’th year
anniversary. For five years we have
been shaking the foundations of Astra
Kulturhaus annually with the best bands
of underground rock together with the
best fans. Last year we had visitors from
more than 40 countries from all over the
world attending the festival.
This year, we are happy to introduce
to you an extended festival. Say hello
to the addition of the Cassiopeia and
Badehaus Clubs. Both located within a 2
minute walking distance from the Astra
Kulturhaus. This addition also means
www.desertfest.de

that we can supply you with even more
cool riffs and grooves. From the earlier
editions 30 bands per festival, we have
now more than 40 bands playing for you
this year. We hope you will like this new
format so that vol. VI will stand out as
the festival of the year. Chill out, be cool,
have some beer and listen to legends
like Saint Vitus, Sleep, John Garcia etc.
Thanks for supporting the underground.
Peace and love!

1000 MODS (GR)
AVON (USA)
This is the tornado that will sweep in over
Berlin and really, rock us all. 1000 Mods what
you can describe as irresistible rock ‘n’ roll.
The songs are so easy to like and they will also
melt your heart. The Greek quartet released
their third album last year and stopped by
Up In Smoke festival in Switzerland on their
European tour. What happened there was that
they gave the audience an out of their body
experience. Nobody will ever forget that show,
the question we ask ourselves is if they can
give you the same experience here in Berlin,
but beware “Repeated Exposure To…”
Early last year an album called “Mad
Marco” showed up in the shelves at your local
record store. The band was called Avon and it
consists of legendary Kyuss, QOTSA etc, drummer Alfredo Hernandes, James Childs of Aribus
and Waxy’s Charles Pasarell. This Californian
trio will provide you with cool riffs, great
vocals and a bunch of 70’s inspired rock. This
is the part 1 of 2, where you can see a legend
of Kyuss fame performing here at Desertfest in
one single day.
6
BASK (USA)
BELLHOUND CHOIR
North Carolina natives, Bask, has been
described as progressive, psych, heavy and
Americana. That’s quite something to live up
to. In our opinion Bask is a damn good rock
band that appeals to everybody at Desertfest.
If you like a band like All Them Witches, check
out these guys too. That’s a no brainer for
everybody for me, you and us. This isn’t very
fuzzy or jazzy, it’s more melancholic and relaxing. If you want a band to chill out to during
these days, you’ve found it in Bask.
Sometimes it just feels right to chill a bit,
close your eyes and let the music take you
to all the places you never thought existed.
Bellhound Choir might confuse you, it’s not a
band we picked from southern blues scene.
This is the solo project from Copenhagen
native Christian Hede Madsen, known for his
work with Pet The Preacher. This is the band
that will take you to all those places with your
eyes closed. Walk by the bar and grab a beer,
close your eyes and chill out.
(DK)
7
BONGZILLA
(USA)
Madison, Wisconsin, gave birth to Bongzilla back in 1995 and after that the stoner
metal scene has never been the same. Maybe
it’s the weed infused lyrics, doomy riffs and a
sludgy sound that is escalating the heaviness
of their music. The music is so mean that it
sometimes feels like you are removing your
earwax with barbed wire. After some years
in hiatus form the late 00’s they returned to
the touring circuit in 2015, when they also
performed at Desertfest Belgium. This band
will for sure give you a green haze.
8
CLOSET DISCO QUEEN (CH)
Don’t worry, you are properly dressed. This
is not a real queen coming to town, it’s a hard
rocking instrumental Swiss duo. Guitar and
drums, that’s what’s needed for these dudes
to rock your socks off. They even take detours
to things that sounds a bit jazzier than the
traditional rock you might listen to. The songs
are mostly Marshall powered intense rockers.
When they play together it sounds more than
just two guys playing. Since they are on a
stage close to you this weekend, check them
out yourself.
DEATH ALLEY (NL)
THE DEVIL AND
THE ALMIGHTY BLUES (N)
About time to run back home folks! Find
your black leather jacket and air guitar in
the wardrobe, it’s time for that fast rock ‘n’
roll that you’ve been waiting your whole life
without knowing. Just admit it, a trip down
to “Black Magic Boogieland” is not the worst
journey you can do. This powerhouse music is
much about attitude and energy, sometimes it
feels like you’re listening to the Duracell rabbit
of rock. Let’s join the party and pick up good
riffs from our Dutch friends.
This is the return of the swampy blues
rock that drags you down to the Mississippi
delta. These guy’s music has a genuine
southern vibe to it and it sounds like there’s
no doubt where the bands origin come from.
But hey, something’s wrong! These guys are
from Norway and they have paved their own
path in the Norwegian music scene. Both
their albums are released on a label called
Blues For The Red Sun, how stoner can it be?
This is, bluesy, fuzzy, chilly and very intense,
so put on your red shoes and dance for them.

DESERT MOUNTAIN TRIBE
DOMKRAFT (SWE)
Three man sounding like they’re about to
bring you either that or the moon, will convince you that they are the next big thing in rock
when they enter the stage. Bass, guitar and
drums, the real trio format is ruling here. Last
year’s debut album “Either That or The Moon”
has sent them on two European and one USA
tour. They now have plenty of routine under
their belt so that they can show themselves
form their best side performing at Desertfest.
After their performance, we are sure you are
ready to join the tribe.
The story about how they interpret their
name is a combination of the Swedish Dom
for judgement and Kraft for power is well
known. On the other hand, the word itself also
means jack, a jack that you for instance use
to jack up your car with. This is really heavy
and sludgy, this combo has what it takes to
give you nightmares thanks to the brutality in
their music. Everything is up to you if you dare
listen to these three Swedish guys and at the
same time if you miss out you’ll never know if
you missed out on the show of your lifetime.
(UK/GER)

13
DOWNFALL OF GAIA (GER)
DUEL (USA)
Sometimes it’s really, dark and cold
outside and it also feels like your freezing to
death. Downfall Of Gaia is very much catching
exact that moment with their music and we
are not talking about catch and release here.
Once they got the listeners attention they
never let her go. This is very demanding and
complex music, it’s kind of sludgy post black
metal. There are traces of total chaos and
trauma in this cold and dark musical landscape they build for you, but don’t be afraid it’s
just great music.
If you mention Austin, Texas, most people
think of it as the home of roots rock and
SXSW. That’s why we and Heavy Psych Sounds
would like to bring you the Duel. This four
piece features two ex-members of Scorpion
Child. The music is described by themselves as
tripped out stoner metal. If you take a good
listen, you’ll soon find out that the album has
that very authentic sound and vibe of the 70’s
hard rock. Either you’re nostalgic or not, this is
like a joyride in a time capsule.
14
15
ECSTATIC VISION (USA)
ELEPHANT TREE (UK)
Bring back the 70’s would be a tempting
phrase to use on Ecstatic Vision, if you remember bands as Amon Düül II and Hawkwind
you’ll understand why. Forget all chemical
substances, this music is a trip itself. At the
same time as these guys from Philly are totally
psyched out music wise they also provide
you with some cool grooves. The guy’s latest
album is so brand new that it’s still warm from
the pressing. We are sure they will do their
very best to convince you that the new songs
for sure are their best so far.
A lot of people has been to Joshua Tree
while others has been listening to Porcupine
Tree. Now, it’s about time we all take a serious
listen to the London stoners Elephant Tree.
They seem to play whatever they think sounds
cool at that moment they wrote the song.
You’ll be thrown from melancholic acoustic
stuff, via Alice In Chains emo grunge to the
very heaviest post metal you can find. It
doesn’t really matter what they play, there’s
always this golden mellow flow to it, just like
Foghat would have said it “Slow Ride”.
16
FARFLUNG
(USA)
Los Angeles is the playground for this trio
that has lasted for over 20 years. The bands
psych infected space rock is like a rocket ride to
Mars. Farflung is like the Star Trek spaceship
Enterprise of rock ‘n’ roll, a spaceship in the
outer space on an endless journey. If you listen
beneath the guy’s trippy sound and melody
you can sometimes also discover some good
old boogie tunes. This is clearly the band
you’ve to prepare yourself to become a space
cadet for.
GIÖBIA
(IT)
If you thought that this band has a
strange name, here’s the explanation. In preChristian time, they used to have a festivity
where a straw puppet symbolizing a witch
was burnt. This was a ritual to the forces of
nature. If those people had the psychedelic
tunes from this band, they for sure wouldn’t
have to run deep into the woods to find
hallucigenic mushrooms. Lot’s of bass groove,
frenetic drumming, spaced out keys and a
howling guitar are the party fixers.
17
GLITTER WIZARD (USA)
GOLD (NL)
Coming out of the city of the Summer of
Love, San Francisco, gives you automatically a
burden to bear. Maybe that’s the reason why
you’ll find as diverse terms like pink metal
and progressive punk used to describe their
music. The funny thing with this combo is
that you never can be sure what will happen
in the next music in one of their songs. Here
are no musical boundaries, only possibilities.
Mention a genre to yourself and you can be
sure you will hear excerpts of it during their
performance.
Everybody knows about gold, not so many
knows the band Gold. They released their
last album so close to the festival as January
this year. It won’t be a wild guess saying that
their set will focus on songs from “Optimist”.
The female fronted six piece from Rotterdam
is playing a dark, very dark form of rock.
Everything is getting an extra layer by Milena
Eva’s beautiful and very calm voice. We are
sure that Gold will appeal to you and the show
is for sure going to be intense.

JOHN GARCIA (USA)
LOWRIDER (SWE)
The original voice of the desert is here,
the legend, the man and of course the killer
vocalist John Garcia. He will entertain us with
well selected songs from his whole career
while closing the festival on Sunday evening.
All the superlatives that can be said about
this guy has already been said. Anyhow he
will for sure take his “Green Machine” and
take you on a “5000 Miles” long journey. If no
“Court Order” has been sent out for speeding,
you will probably also meet “Kylie” along the
journey.
We are stoked to have Lowrider back in
Berlin at Desertfest after four years. Even if
it’s not about cars, this combo is as powerful
as a Chevy 356 engine and will probably tear
down the walls of Astra. Their last show was
back in 2014, so we guess they have built up
a lot of energy by now. They don’t have a very
large discography so unless they have a few
aces up their sleeves it will be songs form the
“Ode To Lo” LP and the double split EP they did
with Nebula.
22
23
MAMMOTH MAMMOTH
(AUS)
Australia and rock ‘n’ roll, have a taste on
that. Bands like AC/DC, Airbourne, Rose Tattoo
and Kings Of The Sun brought us this energy
loaded music built around a good riff and
catchy refrain. Now it’s time for Mommoth
Mammoth to reach your heart with their
Victotia Bitter infused kick ass rock ‘n’ roll.
Four guys spewing out the rock ‘n’ roll clichés
like it was the matter of life and death. That’s
really, what it’s all about when Mickey Tucker
and the other three guys hit the stage. Beware
you’re in danger of getting a whiplash from
headbanging to this music.
24
MARS RED SKY (FR)
By now most of you know that the yellow
planet has a red sky. We’re bringing Mars Red
Sky down to earth just for you. Join in in their
trippy psychedelic and sometimes jazzy universe. After several tours all over Europe, this
is probably a familiar band to all of you. They
will throw you between hope and despair and
then beauty and madness. The three musketeers can sometimes seem a bit confusing but
they always find the way to your heart. The
French trio always has an ace in the sleeve, be
there to find out which one.
MOTOROWL (GER)
ODD COUPLE (GER)
Freshness is often a bit underrated when it
comes to music. The pretty fresh German quintet, Motorowl, will demolish the Doom Over
Leipzig stage with their doomy rock, spiced up
with some psychedelic herbs. This is the most
retro sounding band on this stage, especially
when they flirt with hard rock from the 70’s.
There’s keyboard in their sound and it’s only a
filler. Don’t be afraid even if they sing about
Lucifer, they are nice guys for sure.
What do you get when to guys who
has known each other since kindergarten
suddenly starts creating music? Odd Couple
is what you get of course and now they’re
going to rock Desertfest. This will be a cool
musical trip when they put early Black Keys,
krautrock, rock and some additional psych in
the blender. It won’t be any “mexikaner” they
serve you, but we can guarantee it will be a
strong experience anyhow. Odd Couple is odd
and probably the most original band in this
year’s line-up.
25
PONTIAK (USA)
RIFF FIST
We have lured them away from Virginia
to perform their trippy and psychedelic tunes
for us. The three Carney brothers that are
Pontiak started a brewery in 2015. You might
ask yourself if that beer has inspired their new
album “Dialectic Of Ignorance”. To be honest,
we have no clue. The only thing we are sure
about, is the bands capability of putting up a
super cool show for you Desertfesters. You’re
hereby warned, just enjoy their heavy psych.
The combination Australia and bands
that knows the good riff is a world known
phenomenon. We bring back this riff rocking
trio from Down Under to you. We guarantee
you that there is no other band that takes the
riff more serious than the these guys. If you’re
familiar with the release “For A Few Riffs
More”, they explain everything with the song
title “Riff Stew”. Prepare yourself for a set of
beer, sweat and the mighty riff. Last time they
opened the foyer stage and now it’s about
time they close it.
26
(AUS)
27
RUBY THE HATCHET
(USA)
Sometimes a band shows up with the
sound of an era that is way more than the
bands were sounding back then. Ruby The
Hactchet sounds more 70’s than the bands
form that period of time. A touch of psychedelia and a heavy load of classic hard rock
including that nice organ sound that’s what’s
on offer here. Jilian’s voice on top of the groove
machine the guys in the band has running
for her makes the magic here. Let their music
sneak up on you from behind and drag you in
to the band’s musical haze.
28
SAINT VITUS (USA)
St Vitus, the American doom pioneers
formed already back in 1979 as Tyrant. The
founding members Dave Chandler (guitar)
and Mark Adams (bass) has now reformed
with original vocalist Scott Raegers. Filling
in on drums since Armando Acosta had to
quit back in 2009 is still Henry Vasquez. The
band has had their hiatuses, but since 2008
they’ve been active and kept busy. Last year
they released the “Live Vol. 2”, now let’s hope
that it’s more than a rumor that they will
enter the studio for a new album fronted by
Scott Reagers. Anyhow, prepare yourself for
a night with legends and get seduced by the
lords of doom.
29
SAMSARA BLUES
EXPERIMENT (GER)
SATAN’S SATYRS (USA)
Berlins own God’s of heavy psych are
back with a bang. On the 12’th of May they
are releasing their new album “One With The
Universe”. It shouldn’t be a too wild guess that
Samsara’s high priest Christian Peters and
his band of brothers will present a few new
tracks during their performance at this year’s
Desertfest. Prepare for an orgy of guitar solos
and those long epic songs. This German three
piece will rock your ears off.
Hot rocking Virginia quartet Satan’s Satyrs
is releasing a new album during spring and
they asked themselves; “Is there a better way
to celebrate this, than doing it at Desertfest
Berlin?” We all know that Desertfest Berlin
has the best audience for this kind of party
popping over fuzzed garage rock. Walk over to
the bar and get your beers and start dancing
all over the RAW area, it’s party time. What!
You don’t like beer, you say. It’s not an excuse,
the party is here anyway.
30
31
SLEEP (USA)
STONED JESUS (UKR)
There are many legends in the music
industry and one of the biggest ones is for
sure Sleep. After they disbanded in 1998,
it took five years for the original version of
“Dopesmoker” to finally be released. This
album is now for a lot of stoners considered
as THE stoner rock anthem itself. It was a
groundbreaker when it was released and still
is. Music wise it’s doom metal at its finest.
The two original members, Matt Pike and Al
Cisneros are since 2010 joined by Neurosis
drummer Jason Roeder.
If you’re looking for a band that can jump
from several genres on just one album, you
have found it here. Ukrainian stoners Stoned
Jesus have such a split personality that you
can find garage punk, classic rock and doom
tunes on one album. You’ll never get bored
listening to the three guys from Kyiv who has
the term musical diversity carved in to their
albums. Igor, Sergi and Viktor are the kings
of eastern European stoner rock and rock in
general, don’t miss them live. This is a must
see at the festival.
32
33
SUMA (SWE)
THE COSMIC DEAD (UK)
Last year we brought you the godfathers
of sludge metal, this year we are bringing you
the Zlatan Ibrahimovic of sludge. Suma from
Malmö, Sweden, is like a sleeping volcano
that erupts when you’re expecting it the least.
The super low frequent riffs, bombastic like a
hammer to your neck, will make the buildings
of Friedrichshain tremble for weeks and your
intestines to dislocate. Suma at Desertfest will
be an experience that you will never forget.
Trippy sounds from Glasgow will emerge
when these four guys hit the stage. With a
menu raging from psych to powerful cosmic
rock you’ll soon be out there somewhere in
space searching for aliens. The Cosmic Dead
will probably supply you with the biggest
trip of the festival. The music’s soundscapes
and often slow rhythm makes you leave the
ground without a rocket engine hanging on
your back as a too heavy backpack. Just leave
your troubles behind and fly away with the
Glaswegians.
34
THE WELL (USA)
TOUNDRA (ES)
Another band from the Texas capital,
Austin, that we bring to you is The Well. This
is a three piece that probably have been
listening to great music like Blue Cheer, Muddy
Waters just to get lost in space with Hawkwind. The band manage to blend influences
from a wide range of classic acts and turn the
outcome into something unique. Let’s hope
that we will have a lot of songs form their
latest effort “Pagan Science”, that will give us
all a rollercoaster ride in the musical world of
The Well.
Clear your mind for a musical journey
with beautiful soundscapes form the Spanish
capital. The four dudes will serve you an
instrumental tapas with all the joy from post
rock. Four album to choose songs from will
indicate that we will get a very strong set. The
four guys will take you on musical journey
that you will remember for a long time. They
blend the melodic with the intense, like it was
the most natural thing in the world. Toundra
will be good for everybody’s mind and soul.
35
TSCHAIKA 21/16 (GER)
TUBER (GR)
Weird, crazy and totally fucked up! That’s
a good way to tell you that Tschaika 21/16,
featuring Tim from Rotor and Berlin drum
institution Onkel, is something you must see.
The songs are performed in a danceable 21/16
beat. Math, stoner, noise etc. is some words
that can describe this musical madness. If
this is not crazy enough they sometimes also
feature Sören on vocals and trumpet. This
bands music is so out of control that you must
see them.
If Aphrodite walked out of the sea and up
on the beach, Tuber for sure came in from the
desert. Their instrumental music is dry like a
glass of Chablis and hot like a sauna. Get into
the groove and feel the magic when they are
pulling the strings. This is three Greek guys doing what comes natural to them, playing your
shirt off. If you can stand still to their music,
you are either too drunk to move or paralyzed
by the tunes. Let us all join in on the ride along
the sandy shores of Greece.
36
UR (GER)
VENOMOUS MAXIMUS
What comes more natural when a city has
a festival called Doom Over Leipzig than that
they also have brilliant performers in that
genre. Sludgy doom spiced up with some post
metal makes this furious quartet run you over
like a musical locomotive. The soundscapes
are like swelling corn flakes, when they get
milk poured over. Sometimes the sound is so
brutal that it feels like a dentist is drilling in
your teeth. This band sounds like they made
the soundtrack for the doomsday.
“Houston, we’ve got a problem!” That’s
for sure the situation when the Houston hard
rockers Venomous Maximus hits the stage.
Nobody can stand still when their groove
will hit us. These guys will appeal to all you
rock ‘n’ rollers partying at the fest. With three
albums under their belt and a shitload of gigs,
expect some hot and sweaty rocking from
the stage when the four Texans is putting up
a show. There’s no excuse to miss out on this
one, rock on.
(USA)
37
WIGHT (GER)
WOLVES IN THE
THRONE ROOM (USA)
These four youngsters from Darmstadt
probably listened to Wild Cherry and took
them by the word. Their anthem “Play That
Funky Music, White Boy” is hanging over the
Wight tunes like the North star did guide the
sailors. here when you listen to Wight. Funky
