NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Roman Josi scored twice, Pekka
Rinne had 30 saves and the
Nashville Predators beat the
Chicago Blackhawks 4-1 on
Thursday night to complete a
surprising sweep of the Western Conference’s top seed.
Colton Sissons also scored
and Viktor Arvidsson added
an empty-net goal as Nashville
completed the franchise’s first
playoff sweep. Led by Rinne
and a terrific defensive performance by their lines and
defensive pairings, the Predators limited the high-scoring
Blackhawks to just three goals
in 13 periods.
Nashville will face the winner of the St. Louis-Minnesota
series in the second round. The
Blues have a 3-1 lead heading
into Game 5 on Saturday in
Minnesota.
Chicago became the first No.
1 seed to lose in the opening
round since the Los Angeles
Kings knocked off the Vancouver Canucks on their way to
the Stanley Cup title in 2012.
Chicago’s second straight
first-round exit followed a
regular season in which the
Blackhawks went 50-23-9 and
recorded 109 points, the second-highest total in franchise
history.
It was the first time a No.
1 seed was swept in the first
round since the NHL adopted
its current playoff format in
1994. The Blackhawks had
the best record in the Campbell Conference and were the
Norris Division’s No. 1 seed in
1993 when they got swept by
St. Louis in the opening round.
That also was the last time the
Blackhawks had been swept in
a playoff series before Nashville’s dominant performance.
The game was scoreless

period when Ryan Johansen

MILWAUKEE — Jett Bandy, Eric Thames and Travis
Shaw each hit home runs to
help the Milwaukee Brewers
beat the St. Louis Cardinals
7-5 on Thursday night.
Bandy hit a two-run homer
in the sixth and Thames put
Milwaukee ahead with a tworun shot off Carlos Martinez
(0-3) in the fifth. Shaw’s threerun blast in the first made it 12
consecutive games going yard
for the Brewers, who lead the
majors with 32 home runs.
Zach Davies (1-2) allowed
four runs on eight hits in
5 1-3 innings. He walked
two and struck out five, but
needed Thames’ NL-leading
eighth home run and seventh
in the last eight games for his
first win in four starts.
Jacob Barnes pitched the
ninth for his first save of the
season.
Matt Carpenter hit a solo
home run in the top of the
fifth and Kolten Wong, whose
career-high seven triples led
the Cardinals in 2016, hit his
first of the season in the top
of the second with the bases
loaded.
Jedd Gyorko hit a solo
home run leading off the Cardinals’ eighth.
Martinez gave up five runs
on seven hits in five innings.
He walked two and struck
out seven.
ny Peralta was put on the 10day disabled list because of
an upper respiratory condition. He sat out the four previous games, and the move
was retroactive to Sunday. He
is hitting .120 (3 for 25) with
no RBIs in eight games.
Brewers: With right-hander Matt Garza (right groin
strain) appearing ready to
return from his rehab assignments, manager Craig Counsell must decide how Garza
fits into the pitching staff.
Lyons back
St. Louis recalled lefthander Tyler Lyons before
Thursday night’s game. His
2016 season ended July 31
because of a right knee stress
reaction. He made three appearances in rehabilitation
games with Triple-A Memphis this season, allowing two
runs in 14 innings.

James, Cavs rally from 26 down
BY MICHAEL MAROT

Associated Press
Cleveland Cavaliers’ Tristan Thompson grabs a rebound
above Indiana Pacers’ Myles Turner during the first half of
Thursday’s Game 3 of a first-round playoff series in Indianapolis. Cleveland won 119-111 after trailing by 26 points in
the first half.
INDIANAPOLIS — LeBron
James finished with 41 points,
13 rebounds and 12 assists,
and the Cleveland Cavaliers
set an NBA postseason record
by erasing a 25-point halftime
deficit to beat the Indiana Pacers 119-111 on Thursday night
and take a 3-0 lead.
James passed Kobe Bryant
for No. 3 on the NBA’s career
playoff scoring list and tied another NBA record by winning
his 20th consecutive firstround game.
The Cavaliers will try to
sweep the series Sunday.
The incredible rally ruined Paul George’s big night.
He had 36 points, a playoff
career-high 15 rebounds and
nine assists.
Cleveland trailed by 26 in
the first half and was still down
74-49 at halftime. The largest
halftime deficit overcome to
win a playoff game had been
21 points by Baltimore against
Philadelphia in 1948.
James scored 13 points in
the third quarter to get the
Cavs within 91-84. Cleveland
regained the lead twice during
a 15-5 fourth-quarter run and
closed it out with a 12-5 spurt.
James now has 5,669
points, 29 ahead of Bryant. He
also matched three other exLos Angeles Lakers — Magic
Johnson, Michael Cooper and
James Worthy — for most
consecutive first-round wins.
This comeback began with
a second straight devastating
third-quarter punch from the
Cavs.
After Cleveland cut the deficit to 77-62 and then watched
Indiana extend the margin
to 20, Cleveland finished the
quarter on a 17-4 spurt to
make it 91-84.
Things only got worse for
the Pacers.
George’s 3 with 5:15 to go
gave Indiana a 104-103 lead
— its last of the game. James
answered with a layup out of
a timeout and the Cavs never
trailed again.
It’s only the second time in
the Pacers’ NBA history they
have lost the first three games
in a best-of-seven series. Indiana has never endured a fourgame sweep since joining the
NBA.

Hernandez death officially ruled suicide
holding his brain after
releasing the rest of the
body to a funeral home.
Authorities said the
medical examiner had
ruled cause of death was
asphyxia by hanging and
that investigators had
found three handwritten notes next to a Bible
in Hernandez’s cell at
the Souza-Baranowski
Correctional Center in
Shirley. Authorities previously said Hernandez
had not left a suicide
note and he hadn’t been
on suicide watch.
“There were no signs of
a struggle, and investigators determined that Mr.
Hernandez was alone at
the time of the hanging,”
the statement read.
Hernandez had been
locked into his cell at
about 8 p.m. and no one
entered the cell until a
guard saw him just after 3 a.m. and forced his
way in because cardboard
had been jammed into
the door track to impede
entry, authorities said.
Hernandez was found
hanging from a bedsheet
and rushed to a hospital,
where he was pronounced
dead about an hour later.
Earlier Thursday, Hernandez’s lawyer complained that state offi-
cials had turned over the
27-year-old’s body but
not his brain.
Attorney Jose Baez
said the family had arranged for researchers
at Boston University’s
Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Center to
take custody of the brain.
The center studies a progressive
degenerative
brain disease found in
some athletes who have
experienced repetitive
brain trauma. Hernandez’s body is at a Bostonarea funeral home, but
services will likely be
held elsewhere for the

minutes, but he didn’t

Down 2-0, Boston needs comeback story
BY TIM REYNOLDS
Associated Press
Boston, a city with a
flair for playoff comebacks, now needs another.
The Celtics are on the
brink.
Down 2-0 to the Chicago Bulls, and on the road
for the next two games
starting with Game 3 of
their Eastern Conference
first-round series tonight
(6 p.m., ESPN), Boston
is in massive trouble.
Consider: Bulls guard
Dwyane Wade has never
been on a team that blew
a 2-0 series lead (Wade
and the Miami Heat were
12-0 in such spots), and
the Celtics are 1-16 alltime in series where they
lost the first two games.
Win or lose, Friday
won’t be the end of Boston’s season.
But it may be the last
chance the Celtics have
to save themselves from
a stunning freefall that
a No. 1 seed has never
experienced in NBA history.
“Coming in, I didn’t
say, ‘Hey, we’re gonna be
up 2-0 on Boston.’ No,
no one thought that,”
Wade said. “But we are
in this position. We’ve
earned it.”
The
Celtics-Bulls
game is the first of three
Game 3s on Friday night.
Houston goes to Oklahoma City with the Rockets
holding a 2-0 lead after
rallying to win Wednesday night, and the Los
Angeles Clippers play
at Utah with that series

“You can’t exhale
thinking ‘Oh, we’re going
home, we’re going to be
OK,’” Jazz forward Joe
Johnson said. “That’s
not the case. It’s a real,
real thin line between
winning and losing in the
playoffs.”
Bostonians know playoff fortunes can turn fast.
The Red Sox were
down 3-0 to the Yankees
in the 2004 AL Championship Series and
somehow prevailed. The
Bruins trailed 4-1 in the
third period of a Game 7
against Toronto in 2013
before winning in overtime. The Patriots trailed
28-3 late in the third
quarter of this year’s Super Bowl against Atlanta
and defied all odds to
hoist the Lombardi Trophy.
Rockets at Thunder
Game 3, 8:30 p.m.,
ESPN
— Oklahoma
City’s Russell Westbrook
had 51 points — on 43
shots — in Game 2 and
the Thunder lost anyway to fall behind 2-0.
Westbrook became the
third player in the last 30
years to score that many
points in a playoff loss,
joining Michael Jordan
(63, 1986) and Ray Allen
(51, 2009).
Clippers at Jazz
Game 3, 9 p.m.,
ESPN2 — Clippers stars
Blake Griffin and Chris
Paul averaged a combined 48 points in the
first two games of the
1-1 series. Utah has four
players averaging double figures in the series,
but Gordon Hayward
is shooting 36 percent.
Expect him to break out
a bit now that the series
has shifted to Utah. The
Clippers’ sharpshooter
J.J. Reddick got only 13
shots in 60 minutes of
playing time in the first
two games of the series.
The Clippers are 9-1
in their last 10 games in
Salt Lake City.

DAR announces contest winners
BY MASON BLANFORD
[email protected]
Several McCracken County
students were recognized
recently for their accomplishments in the annual Daughters of the American Revolution youth contests.
The students competed at
local chapter levels before
advancing to statewide, a
five-state division area and
then nationwide.
A prevalent theme this
year for the contests was the
national parks system, in
celebration of the American
Park System’s 100th anniversary.
Themes of past years
have focused on history and
American culture.
“What we do is encourage them to look at history,”
said DAR Youth Committee
Chairman Cindy Byrd. “To
put their thoughts on patriotism, history, education and
conservation down — and
give them an opportunity to
compete at all levels.”
Cheryl Bendick, regent for
the NSDAR Paducah Chapter, said she’s seen increased
involvement in recent years
by students. A good thing,
since the contest has also
helped students with resumes
and various scholarships.
“Ultimately this gives these
children an opportunity to
prepare for challenges facing
them as they approach high
school and college,” Bendick
said. “This is great for the
students, because this does
help motivate them.”
Byrd agreed with increased
involvement in recent years,
adding the contest inspired
inclusivity at all levels.
The Junior American
Citizen contest in particular
allows students from special
needs to gifted alike to be
judged on “their own level.”
Owen Cody, the Paducah
Chapter of the Daughters
of the American Revolu tion’s f if th grade Ameri c a n H is to r y E s s ay w i n ner, dressed in a Revolutionary War costume to receive
his award from the chapter.
He attends Lone Oak Intermediate school.
The contest has
helped students
with resumes
and various
scholarships.
“Students (also) don’t need
high academics to compete
and win nationally,” she said.
“In some contests if you’re
not a good writer, you don’t
have a chance, but here other
skills such as drawing come
out.”
Certificates are soon to be
awarded.
First place state winners who attended the KSDAR Youth Awards ceremony on April 1 in Lexington were (front, center) Jake Hazel of Concord Elementary, first place in Paducah, in state,
in divisional and third in the nation for his poster of Mammoth Cave; (back row) Tristin Drake

MURRAY — A team of
students from Murray State
University secured a place
in the finals of the statewide
Idea State U Business Plan
Competition, which takes
place Saturday.
The first in a series of
regional competitions across
the state was held March 27
at Owensboro Community
College. Nineteen teams
competed for a place in the
finals and the chance to win
a share of $100,000 in prize
money. Bilingual Buddies, a
company founded by Murray State students Edward
Milan, Willis Holmes and
Corie Fitch, won a spot in the
business plan finals.
Bilingual Buddies are
interactive stuffed pets that
teach children another language through interaction.
With a software app that has
been developed, a child can
speak to the pet in English,
and it will repeat their words
back to them in another
language.
Idea State U is Kentucky’s
statewide business plan
competition, designed to
encourage innovation and
entrepreneurship by rewarding student teams from the
commonwealth’s colleges
and universities.
In the history of Idea State
U, 647 students have partici-
pated in 224 teams, and over
$900,000 in prize money
has been awarded. In 2016,
Mason Shelton, a Murray
State student, competed
and won second place and
$15,000 in the finals. Other
Murray State University students who competed in the
regionals were Jacob Price,
Stuart Boyd, Matthew Skinner and Carter Sholar.
Three additional teams
who work with the Kentucky
Innovation Network office
at Murray State placed in
the finals. They are from
Hopkinsville Community
College and the University of
Kentucky-Paducah School of
Engineering.
Dr. Anton R. Reece will
be formally invested with
the responsibilities as the
president of West Kentucky
Community and Technical
College tonight in the Clemens Fine Arts Theatre.
WKCTC’s campus community, friends of the college
and the community will
celebrate Reece’s presidency
as he shares his vision for
WKCTC as one of the top
community colleges in the
nation.
Reece became the president on Oct. 1, succeeding
Dr. Barbara M. Veazey.

March for Science planned
As one of four science
marches planned in Kentucky on Earth Day, the
Paducah March for Science is
set for Saturday.
Paducah Progressive Action invites western Kentuckians to join hundreds of thousands nationwide to show
support for science and the
funding of scientific research
in the face of budget cuts and
threats to dismantle related
government agencies. It’s inspired by the planned March
for Science in Washington,
D.C., which has inspired 400
other marches worldwide.
The 13-block march will
begin at 2 p.m. at Fountain
Avenue and Broadway, ending at Dolly McNutt Plaza
around 3 p.m. between City
Hall and the County Courthouse.
Marchers will fill both sidewalks on Broadway to avoid
blocking traffic. Anyone unable to walk the entire route
is invited to join the crowd at
Dolly McNutt.

Lea Wentworth at 270-2177787 or leawenthome@

FRIDAY, APRIL 21, 2017
ARIES (March 21-April
19): Think fast, but don’t
box yourself into a corner. It
will take precision and good
planning if you want to come
out on top.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20):
Make solid choices based on
facts and intelligence. Know
your limitations and aim to
create greater balance in
your life. Play hard, work
hard and make decisions
and choices that will help
you reach your goals and improve your health.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20):
Channel your energy into
things that truly matter to
you. Rise above anyone who
is playing dirty or trying to
undermine you.
CANCER (June 21-July 22):
Stability should be your target. Don’t let an emotional
situation escalate into something you cannot control.
Protect your position, your
reputation and your physical
and emotional well-being. Offer peace, not chaos, if you
want to maintain integrity.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Use
your ability to tap into what’s
going on around you and it
will spare you from being
fooled by someone who is
trying to take advantage of
you.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept.
22): Express your thoughts

able to bring about positive
changes. Socialize with people who share your beliefs
and interests.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22):

peace over discord.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov.

of your colleagues and stay
focused on the changes you
can make to improve your
own knowledge, skills and
chance for greater opportunities. Secure your plans.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan.

will drag you down. Concentrate on the people and proj-
ects that will help you make
the highest return. Your aim
should be to stabilize your
life, not disrupt it.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb.
18): The help you have offered to others in the past
will be returned to you. Don’t
hesitate to share your ideas,
intentions and future plans.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March

Global Youth Service
Day is April 21-23
Dear Annie: Young
people are ready, willing
and able to tackle the
world’s most difficult
challenges, yet they are
vastly underrepresented
as active citizens, decision-makers and leaders.
From the preschoolers in Arizona collecting
canned goods to combat hunger to the high
schooler in Virginia creating STEM clubs for
women and girls to the
middle schooler in Alabama saving the state’s
monarch butterfly population, all of these remarkable youths have a
common goal: to raise
awareness and solve
the problems facing the
world today.
Today’s social and environmental problems
are immense; we need
young people to create
solutions to real-world
problems now.
Please let your readers know about Global
Youth Service Day,
which occurs from April
21 to April 23 this year.
During this threeday event, thousands of
community partners in
the United States and
125 countries will activate millions of young
people to strengthen
their communities.
Global Youth Service
Day recognizes the solutions that young people are bringing to the
world’s most pressing
issues 365 days a year.
When given the opportunity, young people
are great assets and resources to their communities, providing unique
Dear
Annie
perspectives and skills.
Youths who are engaged as active community members are
likelier to grow up to
volunteer, vote and
donate to charitable
causes.
Research shows that
when youths engage in
quality service and service learning projects,
they strengthen their
leadership skills, increase their academic
engagement and develop vital career and
workforce
readiness
skills.
These
outstanding
youths
demonstrate
that young people are
leaders and problemsolvers today, not just
the leaders of a distant
tomorrow.

media — @YouthService on Twitter and at
https://www.facebook.

CEO of Youth Service
America
Dear Steven: I
couldn’t agree more.
When young people
are given the opportunity to help their
communities thrive,
they thrive, too.
I encourage all my
young readers to celebrate Global Youth
Service Day this
weekend and find
ways to keep shining all year long.
Dear Annie: This is
regarding “ChargedUp Spouse,” the aggravated man whose
wife is constantly using and misplacing his
phone chargers, resulting in ongoing and
frustrating searches.
I have, I think, the
definitive
solution:
He should look into a
“key-finding” device.
There are many inexpensive paging/tracking devices available
today.
The receiver is typically attached to your
key ring and emits a
loud beep whenever
the transmitter is activated.
Though these are
often marketed for
finding keys, they can
be used for any item.
In this case, the
receiver would simply be affixed to the
phone charger instead
of to his car keys.
And unlike the colored tape option, this
solution would not require that the missing
charger be within his
actual line of sight.
I’ve used these devices myself, and I
have found them consistently effective and
reliable. — Mike K.
Dear Mike: A
modern solution
for a modern problem. I like it.

Vinyl music gives record stores
a boost in the digital world
BY DAVID SHARP
Associated Press
PORTLAND, Maine —
Record stores have not
only survived the onslaught of pirated music,
digital downloads and
online streaming services. They’re now growing
in numbers.
Several hundred indie music retailers have
opened in the past five
years in the U.S. thanks
largely to the resurgence
of vinyl records, industry
officials say.
“Stores are popping up
in small towns. There’s
enough vinyl business to
support them. You have
a lot of young entrepreneurs who are seeing this
opportunity,” said Wes
Lowe from Alliance Entertainment Corp., the
nation’s largest wholesale distributor of compact discs, DVDs and vinyl record albums.
That gives music lovers something to cheer
as Record Store Day celebrates its 10th anniversary Saturday in stores
from Maine to California.
The annual event pays
homage to the neighborhood music store, the

A look at a few films exploring
the LA riots, 25 years later
BY SANDY COHEN
Associated Press
LOS ANGELES — Los
Angeles erupted into the
most destructive civil
disturbance in US history on April 29, 1992, and
the 25th anniversary is
being marked by documentaries exploring the
roots and lingering impact of the LA riots.
All include the 1991
videotaped footage of a
group of white police officers relentlessly beating unarmed black motorist Rodney King, and
coverage of their acquittal the following year
that touched off three
days of unchecked violence, arson and looting.
“LA 92” (National
Geographic)
Oscar-winning documentarians Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin find
the roots of 1992’s civil
unrest in the Watts riots and the 1991 killing
of 15-year-old Latasha
Harlins by shopkeeper
Soon Ja Du, who was
convicted of manslaughter but received no jail
time.
It tracks the long history of police brutality in
black communities and
the growing tensions
between blacks and
Koreans after Harlins’
death, and explores the
role the riots may have
played in the 1992 presidential election. Opens
theatrically on April 28
and comes to National
Geographic Channel on
April 30.
“L.A. Burning: The
Riots 25 Years
Later” (A&E)
Produced by and featuring Oscar-nominated
writer-director
John
Singleton, this film
opens with video footage
of the 2016 fatal police
shootings of Philando
Castile in Minnesota and
Alton Sterling in Louisiana, along with the protests that followed the
high-profile deaths of
other young black men
at the hands of police.
Directors One9 and
Erik Parker provide a
mix of LAPD history,
interviews with the men
who attacked truck driver Reginald Denny and
the perspective of a former lieutenant tasked
with responding to the
riot epicenter at the intersection of Florence
and Normandie avenues. Premiered Tuesday.
“L.A. Riots: 25
Years Later”
(History Channel)
Filmmakers
Jenna
Rosher and Mark Ford
explore the past and
present in this film, from
the Watts riots to Black
Lives Matter. It looks at
the history of police relations in LA’s black community, exacerbated by
drugs and gangs in the
’80s and the LAPD’s aggressive response, which
included
destructive
home invasions.
It explores the political implications of the
tenuous relationship between police chief Gates
and mayor Tom Bradley, who both left office
shortly after the riots.
Premieres April 23.
“Let it Fall: Los
Angeles 19821992” (ABC)
Oscar winner John
Ridley focuses on racial
tensions in the decade
leading up to what he
calls the 1992 uprising.
Interview
subjects
include neighborhood
residents, police officers,
jurors who served on
the King beating trial,
as well as victims, witnesses and perpetrators
of the ensuing violence.
Ridley also explores
LAPD policies, including its use of the battering ram during the crack
epidemic of the ‘80s and
banning of the chokehold in 1982. Opens theatrically Friday; airing
on ABC on April 28.
“The Lost
Tapes: LA Riots”
(Smithsonian
Channel)
Former
newspaper
reporter Tom Jennings’
film skips interviews
and narration in favor
of voices and images directly from 1992.
The film relies on footage taken by neighborhood residents and Los
Angeles Police Department cameras, along
with audio from local
radio station KJLH,
which abandoned its
traditional music format
during the unrest to take
calls from the community about their fears and
concerns as the city was
torn apart. Premieres
Sunday.
Associated Press

long gathered to thumb
through vinyl records
or cassette tapes. Back
in the 1970s, every community had at least one
of them, but hundreds
went out of business at
the onset of the digital
music revolution.
The number of independent record stores
leveled off at about
2,000 before growing
over the past five years to
a number that’s closer to
2,400, Lowe said.
The resurgence in vinyl sales is helping.
A new generation is
enamored with oldschool vinyl albums
and turntables, joining older listeners who
grew up with record
albums and audio purists who prefer the full,
warm sound of albums
to modern compressed
digital audio files.
Sales of vinyl albums have grown from
fewer than 1 million
records a year in 2005
to more than 13 million
in 2016, according to
Nielsen Music.

LOS ANGELES — After an absence from the
spotlight, Richard Simmons is speaking out directly to his fans, saying,
“Hope to see you again

Simmons posted a

shoppers are buying. They’re wrestling with
intense competition from online leader Amazon.
“The economy is in a lot better shape at this
junction,” said Perkins. “It speaks to how difficult
the retailing environment is.”
Stores struggling with fewer customers are
discounting heavily to
compete with low prices
online. They’re also
investing in their online
businesses just to keep
up, but both moves are
hurting profits.
A decline in quarterly
earnings would mark
the second consecutive
drop and the third in the
last six quarters,
according to Perkins’
tracking.

Retailers may report first-quarter results that
seem like a rerun of the Great Recession.
Stores are expected to show a 7.4 percent
decline in profits for the period that covers the
early part of spring selling, says Ken Perkins,
president of Retail Metrics, which tracks
expectations and results
for more than a hundred
retailers.
That would be the
worst performance since
the 11.6 percent drop
during the first quarter of
2009, when the economy
was still in a deep slump,
Perkins says.
But retailers now are
dealing not with an
economic downturn but

Softness in GE’s oil and gas, transportation and lighting

That caused the company’s
