2011 Annual Report - Adrienne Arsht Center

FROM THE LEADERSHIP
Walking through these great halls every day, I am reminded of the extraordinary men and women whose
visionary quest to make Miami one of the great cultural cities of the world helped create our magnificent
performing arts center. The Adrienne Arsht Center is a living, vibrant, and constant tribute to these
outstanding pillars of our community, poignantly reflected in the passing this year of Woody Weiser and
his request to have the funeral service conducted on the stage of the Knight Concert Hall. Shortly after
celebrating Woody’s legacy, 100 young AileyCamp dance students took the same stage and filled the hall
with talent, beauty and joy. It was a profound transition as we at once honored the past and saw the future
of the arts flowering right before our eyes—a fitting tribute and a dream fulfilled.
John Richard
President and CEO, Adrienne Arsht Center
In my travels throughout the U.S., I have found that the Adrienne Arsht Center is renowned to audiences
and great artists alike for its unparalled acoustics and state-of-the-art performance spaces. It ranks as one
of the finest cultural venues in any city in the world, and its diverse and global programming brings the
best of world culture to our community. Some of the greatest artists have made their desire to perform at
the Arsht Center abundantly clear, knowing that their artistry will be showcased in the best possible way.
Adrienne Arsht
Chairman, Adrienne Arsht Center Foundation
As we look toward our landmark 10th anniversary season, we build our future on our already
extraordinary achievements. We explore new opportunities and see that our successful signature programs,
including, Masterworks, Jazz Roots, Rock Odyssey, Flamenco Festival and Broadway in Miami, continue
to grow. We believe that it is the finest programming that builds the greatest audience. The performing
arts touch lives; often they transform them – that’s what’s happening in our halls every day.

YURI BASHMET, violist, and EVGENY KISSIN, pianist
“Each, on his own, is a phenomenon who has changed the course of classical music performance. To witness their
unique collaboration was a very rare privilege that I will treasure forever. That the Adrienne Arsht Center was only one of three venues
in the United States – along with New York’s Carnegie Hall and Chicago’s Symphony Hall – in which this once-in-a-lifetime concert was
played speaks not only to the status of the acoustically superb Knight Concert Hall among the world’s great classical music venues, but
also to the caliber of world-class performers that the Arsht Center brings to Miami as part of its classical music programming.”
Dr. Sanford L. Ziff
ALVIN AILEY AMERICAN DANCE THEATER
“As a Miami native, I am at once proud and humbled by the extraordinary way South Florida audiences
and critics have embraced the company’s annual visits. As the company’s new artistic director, I am thrilled to be able to share with my
home town the electrifying energy of our dancers and the transformative power of our works. I look forward to the company’s future visits
to the Adrienne Arsht Center, where presenting programs that refect South Florida’s rich cultural diversity and meaningful arts educational
experience are central to what they do.”

BALLET NACIONAL DE ESPAÑA
“Over the past four years, the Adrienne Arsht Center has brought the finest
flamenco artists to South Florida, making it one of the most important venues for flamenco outside Spain. The
2011 Flamenco Festival Miami reached new heights when it presented the only American engagement of Spain’s foremost ambassadors of
flamenco—Ballet Nacional de España—for a full week of performance. EULEN America strongly believes that the arts enrich the quality
of people’s lives, as well as the communities in which they perform, which is why our company is such a strong believer in supporting
festivals such as this one in that they positively impact the cultural environment of where we live and work.”
JERSEY BOYS
“Through our support of Broadway in Miami, Bank of America is proud to partner
with the Adrienne Arsht Center and Broadway Across America to bring the very best of Broadway – the very best of American culture – to
Miami audiences. We believe that in so doing, we’re contributing to the growth and sustainability of the Arsht Center while fueling our
community’s economy. This season’s Jersey Boys, winner of the 2006 Tony Award for Best Musical, is a perfect example of creative genius
at its best, successfully merging music, choreography, set design and costumes to recreate a part of Americana that resonates with us all.”

AYIKODANS
“To perform at three sold-out shows in a space that truly lets our dancers be the best they can be was a joy beyond
words after the 2010 earthquake destroyed our school and studio. The Adrienne Arsht Center’s belief in us – and its ability to organize
and raise $117,000, more than double the amount expected – is the ultimate gift to Haiti. Yes, it’s true that so many Haitians are in need
of shelter, food and other basics to survive, but also essential for so many is the sense of joy, possibility and self-worth that can be found
in the arts. For the past 23 years I have been trying to get that kind of support. Now I know we can keep on fighting, but we dearly need
continuous support from institutions like the Adrienne Arsht Center to achieve our goal.”
Jeanguy Saintus
Founder and Choreographer, Ayikodans
MERCE CUNNINGHAM DANCE COMPANY LEGACY TOUR
“Merce Cunningham was the great choreographer of our time. As part of his company’s closing
“Legacy Tour,” they returned to Miami with a brilliant performance installation that featured the multi-disciplinary collaboration between
Cunningham and Robert Rauschenberg. Exclusive to the Miami engagement were the Rauschenberg costumes worn by the dancers as well as
the site-specific installation for the Ziff Ballet Opera House created by Miami’s Daniel Arsham. Cunningham Dance Company’s return was
an outstanding opportunity to engage our community through the arts with outreach and educational events, including master classes, lecturedemonstrations, and “Merce Family Hour,” that were available to everyone throughout the engagement.”

THE SPARROW
“The Sparrow was a wildly unique new work that thrilled us with intense drama and surprising innovation.
It marked the launch of an ongoing partnership with the acclaimed House Theatre of Chicago and serves as a template for the Center’s
collaborations with other not-for-profit local and national organizations—particularly those interested in commissioning, developing and
presenting new work. In conjunction with Arsht Center Presents programming, arts partnerships enhance the Center’s mission to expand
the quantity, quality, and diversity of programs, assuring a vibrant, ever-changing cultural scene each and every season.”
Michael Spring
JERRY SEINFELD
“Proclaimed ‘the best comedian of our time’ by The Washington Post, Jerry Seinfeld belongs in that exclusive
pantheon of great performers who, like Lucille Ball, Jackie Gleason, Bill Cosby, and Richard Pryor, define and entire era of American
comedy. Although his award-winning TV sitcom made him a global superstar, his first love has always been stand-up, and it was only
natural that the Adrienne Arsht Center would kick off its new Comedy Planet signature series with his brilliant humor. He sold out
two performances back to back at the Knight Concert Hall and served as another brilliant entry in the long list of the world’s finest
entertainers that the Adrienne Arsht Center brings to Miami year round.”

EVA AYLLON and PERU NEGRO
“Perú Negro was formed more than 30 years ago to preserve Peru’s African heritage. This group of 22
singers, dancers, and musicians performs all over the world and was appointed “Cultural Ambassadors of Black Peru” by the Peruvian
government. Eva Ayllon, in her own right, is also a Peruvian musical icon, sharing the joy of our music for more than three decades. The
scope of programming at the Arsht Center reflects the thrilling diversity of cultures throughout our South Florida community. Many of us
may speak different languages and honor various traditions, but great art has the power to transcend the differences among us and unite
us in its beauty.”
Abigail Pollack
FLORIDA GRAND OPERA, NEW WORLD SYMPHONY and MIAMI CITY BALLET
“Miami City Ballet celebrated its 25th Anniversary with one of its most ambitious productions to date—a
magnificent, critically acclaimed staging of John Cranko’s full-length Romeo and Juliet. The Florida Grand Opera marked 70 years of
artistic achievements with the Miami premiere of a new opera by David DiChiera, Cyrano. New World Symphony, America’s Orchestral
Academy, as always featured its brilliant young musicians—the classical music leaders of tomorrow—in a 23rd season full of orchestral
favorites. The state-of-the-art Ziff Ballet Opera House and Knight Concert Hall—hailed as two of the best venues for classical music,
opera and ballet in the country—serve as the best possible showcase for the outstanding contributions that these three exceptional arts
institutions make to the cultural life of South Florida.”

3 GENERATIONS OF DIVAS
Jane Monheit, Dianne Reeves, and Nikki Yanofsky
“With four seasons of jazz stars performing for standing-room-only audiences, the
Adrienne Arsht Center’s Jazz Roots series has been at the forefront of a thrilling resurgence of jazz throughout the United States. This
season’s “3 Generations of Divas” embodied in one night one of the outstanding characteristics that has made Jazz Roots an instant critical
and audience favorite. It looked to a future full of exciting possibilities while honoring the illustrious past of this uniquely American art
form. In the tradition of jazz icons such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Sarah Vaughan, “Divas” placed the spotlight on three of
today’s most talented jazz vocalists. Each one is a devoted keeper-of-the-flame, but at the same time each one brings a fresh, dynamic
approach that ensures the evolution of this treasured music.”

FREE GOSPEL SUNDAYS
“We are a diverse community, but our mutual love of music and the bond between performers and audience during Free
Gospel Sundays, regardless of age or culture, is a powerful force. This is why the audiences—15,000 to date—keeps growing each season.
Free parking and free admission makes this roof-raising experience accessible to everyone in Miami. Gospel is a deep-rooted musical
tradition here and it should be enjoyed by as many people as possible. Free Gospel Sundays showcases this cultural treasure. It makes it
clear that the music – and the Adrienne Arsht Center – belongs to us all.” Pastor Marc Cooper

ROCK ODYSSEY
“This partnership between the Adrienne Arsht Center and Miami-Dade County
Public Schools bridges the gap between a classroom education and a personal encounter with the performing arts. For three
years, Rock Odyssey has become a rite of passage for Miami’s 26,000 fifth-graders. The show introduces them to Homer’s ancient Greek
poem and – through professional development workshops and lesson plans – it provides a way for their teachers to use the power of
drama to teach about math, science and other subjects critical to Florida’s Sunshine State Standards. The arts belong right up there with
the three ‘Rs’ of education. It is every child’s inalienable right to experience the transformational power of the performing arts.”
Alberto Carvalho
Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools
AILEYCAMP MIAMI
“The Adrienne Arsht Center’s mission is to make the arts available to as wide an
audience as possible through a variety of programs that include AileyCamp Miami, Free Gospel Sundays, Free Family Fest,
and the far-reaching Learning Through The Arts, which so far has invited 75,000 Miami-Dade County students to a free live performance
at the center. We salute the Arsht Center for making the arts a joyful and accessible experience to everyone throughout our community.”
