Marana Middle School student
wins Marana District Spelling Bee
Winning word “meticulous”
Tucson, AZ. (January 28, 2015) – Matthew Glasshoff, 7th grade student, became the
Marana Unified School District’s spelling bee champion in the 39th round. After a grueling
19 round spell off between the final two spellers, the Marana Middle School student
correctly spelled the final word “meticulous” after respelling the word “amarillo” which was
spelled incorrectly by his opponent. This is the second year Matthew placed 1st and the
second year, Tressah Moon, Picture Rocks Intermediate School student, placed 2nd at the
District bee.
The District Spelling Bee was held on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at 10:15 am in the
auditorium at Mountain View High School, 3901 W. Linda Vista Blvd., Tucson 85742. Over
5,500 Marana Unified School District students, representing eleven elementary schools
and two middle schools, competed in classroom and school spelling bees over the past
two months in order to be one of the 28 spellers competing at the Marana district Bee.
Matthew Glasshoff will be joined by the next three top contestants, and alternate, at the
Pima County Spelling Bee on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the Arizona
School for the Deaf and Blind, Berger Center for the Performing Arts, 1200 W. Speedway
