Joan Baez - March 19 at 8 p.m., Alys Stephens Center

1716 University Boulevard
Birmingham, AL 35294-0010
A musical force of nature, she unselfconsciously introduced
Bob Dylan to the world in 1963, marched on the front lines
of the Civil Rights movement with Martin Luther King Jr.,
inspired Vaclav Havel to fight for a Czech Republic, and
participated in two of the early Amnesty International tours
– the Conspiracy of Hope tour in 1986 and the Human
Rights Now! tour in 1988. She brought the Free Speech
Movement into the spotlight at Berkeley, took to the fields with Cesar Chavez and
the United Farm Workers, organized resistance to the war in Southeast Asia, then
40 years later saluted the Dixie Chicks for their courage to protest war. » Baez’s
earliest recordings fed a host of traditional ballads into 1960s rock. Many songs that
she introduced on her early LPs found their way into the rock vernacular: ―House of
the Rising Sun‖ (the Animals), ―John Riley‖ (the Byrds), ―Babe, I’m Gonna Leave
You‖ (Led Zeppelin), ―What Have They Done to the Rain‖ (the Searchers),
―Jackaroe‖ (Grateful Dead) and ―Long Black Veil‖ (the Band), to name a few. She
quickly began to focus awareness on songwriters ranging from Woody Guthrie,
Dylan, Phil Ochs and Richard Fariña and continues to do so to this day.» Baez is
arguably the world’s most famous female folk singer, known for her distinctive,
sweeping soprano and her accomplished interpretive skills.
