WOODLAND GRANGE Our School’s Newsletter June 2016 A Note from the Executive Principal: We are now well and truly into the Summer term even if the weather at times appears to have other ideas! All of the pupils’ hard work planting in the Spring is now coming into fruition. The strawberries in particular will soon be ready to pick. With the EU referendum and the European football championships in all the headlines, the theme for this half term could only be one thing and that is Europe! We have been looking at the cultures of other European nations, looking at their language, their geography and the popular part, cooking and tasting their food! The date for the End of Term Review and Open Day is the 21st of July and we will be sending out invites shortly. School Project: A little bit about it… Recycle/Re-use The Recycle/Re-use project aims to use items that have previously been discarded and use them to grow crops. This week has seen plenty of growth. Picture of tyres Rapid Reading Scheme Goes Live! Woodland Grange is now using the highly acclaimed Rapid Reading Scheme developed by Pearson. A range of books focusing on both reading and phonic development are available in school as part of our intervention program. However, pupils now have access to further materials through online access at home. All parents and carers have been sent details showing them how children can log on and access the resources that have been uploaded by staff at school. The online reading scheme is matched to individual pupil levels and interactive questions help assess their comprehension and understanding. Words that pupils find difficult are reported back to staff and the school is able to monitor pupil progress. If you would like anymore information about the scheme, please contact the school. Design Technology links with Reclaim/ Recycle Project. As part of their Design Technology Course, Jay and Leon have been looking at designing planters. The match organsied by Graham Cridland (Lead Angling Coach) was to celebrate the life of PCSO Ken Oldershaw who was a keen supporter of the Academy. Callum and Ethan, both in Yr 6 showed great patience on what was a long and hot day and although the fish weren’t in abundance, Ethan showed great skill in landing a 2oz Perch. Therapeutic Horsemanship accessing Equine Assisted Learning and Therapeutic Horsemanship through Equine Partners CIC based in Wisborough Green. Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) sessions involve horses and humans working together for emotional growth and learning. EAL is a powerful and effective approach that has incredible impact on individuals, young people and families. The exercises provide a metaphor for situations outside the environment they are conducted in. Because these are non-judgmental and not confrontational the participants are relaxed and can be encouraged to take what they learn about themselves and their circumstances and apply it in their daily lives. We use practical exercises to support you as you develop your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing and reach towards personal goals. Activities are planned to meet specific goals and objectives and progress is constantly monitored and reviewed.
