Mission
Statement
Our mission is to be
a community
of loving people
who spread
God’s grace by
teaching
God’s word, connecting
followers in faith,
and serving others.
Faith Forum
“Peace be with you. As the father has sent me,
so I send you.” (John 20:21)
There may be passages about our mission that are as direct, but none any more
direct. By the time you get this Pentecost will be a week to ten days away, and John’s
message will be our message. It tells us whose we are, and makes our call clear. I
Corinthians 12:3b and following tells us we are gifted as a people of God individually to be
part of a Body of Christ living out the mission. (We do this to greater or lesser degrees; sin
disrupts us a good bit. I am going to look at the greater.)
2011 has been quite a year of MISSION for us already; here is a quick and partial
list of what we have already accomplished. Piece Corps has 239 quilts for LWR and local use
and dresses and hand bags for Malawi. Prayer shawls are made for the hospitalized and
homebound. A mission trip to St. Paul is in the works for late June, and a Mini-Mission trip to
St. Vinnie’s to help with a supper took place in early-May. We have a growing Sunday School,
confirmed 10 youth, have had a celebration of the year, and look forward to VBS at Wildwood
Park July 10. We have a new piano; have had a great celebration of our music ministry,
which has more variety in worship style and musical content.
Our faith journey is part of why we are here; spiritual direction groups have been
started (as we are led we will add more), Guys and God continues, and we are more
intentional about sharing our faith journey’s. This is in addition to the Women’s Bible studies,
and the Tuesday Book of Faith Bible study. These opportunities and the growth from worship
helps each of us witness in our daily lives.
We also have Boy, Cub, and Girls Scouts, Mons of Marshfield, Sons of Norway,
Overeater and Alcoholics Anonymous, AP Testing, and other community groups that use the
building. We are in discussions with the Literacy Council to use the computer lab and
Clubhouse (a mental health support program) to use the parsonage. We hope to have more
information by the time you read this.
Our financial contributions allow this to happen by providing staff, material,
comfortable space for those participating, and mission beyond our doors to the world. I am
writing in mid-May and we are ahead of budget for the year (very unusual, but it allows us to
bless others more). Lenten offerings went to S.O.S., St. Vinnies, Mary’s Place, Care Fund, and
general fund, each receiving $587.80. Our Easter offering blessed the Resource Center of the
Synod (we get a lot of use from it) with $700 and the Care Fund (a partnership with 1st Pres.)
received $1,684. $560 was received for Japanese relief. Quarters for Malawi were at $563 at
the end of April (will be more at final tally).
All this is MISSION that we have done in the name of Jesus. It is an exciting time.
We have a vision of faith(ful) mission, and we are sharing the faith. One reminder as
summer fun begins-THE MISSION DOES NOT TAKE VACTION. People still need the love of
Christ shared by you daily as you go about life, and the work of mission that the congregation
is about continues. Each of us is that witness, by sharing the Good News through our prayers,
worship, actions, and financial giving.
The Holy Spirit is at work. It is showing in many facets of our life together. Keep
praying and keep living the Faith.
Please have a fun, relaxing, and safe summer.
Peace, Pastor Bob

Dear Friends in Christ,
I would like to thank you all for
your support during these
challenging economic conditions.
In February I had to compose a
rather difficult letter informing you
of our financial short falls and
asking for your help. I had some
confidence that you all support
our mission at Faith but I am
personally overwhelmed at how quickly we made up our
budget shortfall.
As of the last Sunday in April, we are now on budget for 2011.
I would personally like to thank you all for your generous gifts.
As we enter the warmer months of the year and many of us
are traveling, please remember to keep the ministry of Faith
Lutheran Church in your prayers. We also ask that you
continue your wonderful financial support of our ministry.
Sincerely,
Randy D. Lueth, Council President 2011

As we enter into summer and
prepare to celebrate Pentecost, I
have a few updates for you about
our summer worship music. At
the Voices of Praise service (8
a.m.), we’ll begin to use portions
of Setting 8 from our ELW
hymnal. We’ll be mixing this setting with other contemporary
music used as portions of the liturgy and as hymns. As usual,
we’ll have a mix of instrumentation, including percussion on
some Sundays.
Kathy Biederwolf will be sharing her time and talents as the
organist for many of the 9:30 services this summer. Please
remember to thank her when you see her!

From the Bishop . . .
I write this on the day that the death of Osama bin Laden was announced. The TV
and Internet are filled with the news of the successful raid of highly skilled Navy
Seals, the feelings relived by those who lost loved ones on September 11, the response of people and governments around the world, and the analysis of potential
terrorist reprisals.
I am surprised at my visceral, deep response of satisfaction that a mass murderer is
dead from a bullet through the left eye and buried in the depths of the cold sea. Perhaps I should wait to absorb the news more fully and ponder my feelings more
deeply, but I have already begun to think about what bin Ladens death means to people of faith. Specifically,
what does my sense of vindication mean for me when I do not consider myself a vindictive person?
The American psyche was changed forever when three passenger jets slammed into the World Trade Center
and Pentagon, and another into the Pennsylvania soil before it could hit a D.C. target. Before 9-11, the bombing of the Tanzanian Embassy, the USS Cole, a British subway and more are all linked to bin Laden. Security
and restrictions are now part of our everyday lives. Terrorism and extremism are “isms” to which we pay close
attention. And Osama bin Laden was a mastermind and a symbol of the dark side of humanity, a dark side we
oppose and fight against.
How proud I am of the team that served our country so effectively. How relieved I am that one who has murdered so indiscriminately no longer walks the face of the earth. How pleased I am that some small measure of
justice is felt by those who have experienced the cruel pain of loss caused by this elusive man. But, how uneasy I am to be so quickly moved to relish revenge and to think, “Yes! They got him!”
That’s why these words from holy writ grab me. Ezekiel 33:11a says, “Say to them, As I live,̏ says the Lord
God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from their ways and live.̏In the
Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said, “You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor and hate
your enemy.̏ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be
children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on
the righteous and on the unrighteous” (Matthew 5:43-45).
The contrast between a sense of justice in the death of bin Laden and words of Scripture that say peacemakers are blessed is reflective of the reality of life this side of the fullness of the Kingdom. The Kingdom has
dawned upon us in the death and resurrection of Jesus, but we are still fallen creatures in daily need of redemption. That’s why our baptism steeps us in the death and resurrection in the Lord every day through repentance and forgiveness.
I have little doubt that I will continue to struggle with earthly “justice” and the radical words of the Bible about
turning the other cheek. Frankly, persons of faith should intensely experience such struggle as we live out the
Gospel of grace in a broken, sometimes brutal, world.
Recently, I delivered a keynote address at a Martin Luther King commemoration event. In the research for the
presentation, I came across this King quote that informs me these post-bin Laden days. "Returning violence
for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot
drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” And . . . I continue to struggle.

ELCA DISASTER RESPONSE
RESPONDING TO U.S. SEVERE STORMS
An outbreak of tornadoes tore across the Midwest this weekend, leaving a path of destruction
from Texas to Minnesota. Especially hard-hit is Joplin, Mo., where a powerful tornado leveled
parts of the community, killing at least 89 people. Residents say the city is completely
unrecognizable. The building that housed an ELCA congregation has been destroyed,
according to its pastor. Please keep the Rev. Bill Pape and the people of Peace
Lutheran Church in Joplin in your prayers.
ELCA Disaster Response is already assessing the situation in Joplin and other areas affected by severe storms and flooding. Your
gifts are needed to help provide for the immediate and long-term needs of those affected by these disasters.
All of your gifts-100 percent-designated for "U.S. Severe Storms" will be used for emergency and long-term assistance following
these storms. Please give generously and continue to pray for those whose lives have been uprooted by this disaster.
The Rev. Daniel Rift, Director, ELCA World Hunger and Disaster Appeal
You may either use one of your blue envelopes and put in the offering plate on Sundays and designate it for ELCA
