“It provides an opportunity to meet
new friends and like-minded students
and join these individuals in a collaborative, problem solving team. I am
looking forward to the impact of these

NDSHS Junior Summit Program
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The Junior Summit program was developed in
consultation with our primary partners to complement and accentuate the student’s current
learning while drawing on the expertise that
NDSHS has to offer students in the area. A
successful application for Academic Talent
Development funding through NCR in early
2012 brought the group together and the idea
was developed further. In its first year over 70
applications from 6 primary schools received.
2013 saw six dedicated NDSHS teachers taking
on the role of project leaders in the areas of
Science & Agriculture, Design & Make, Marine
Science, Performing Arts, Digital Design &
Multimedia and Aviation which are delivered
to students via on-line learning in the Learning
Place, project work at both Cooroy and Pomona Campuses of Noosa High and through various planned field trips to link with other agencies and deliver rich and authentic learning
experiences for the students.
PROJECT GOALS
PROJECT SCHEDULE
The Junior Summit Program aims to provide a
seamless transition from primary to secondary
school through the use of engaging and challenging curriculum. Talented and highly motivated
Years 5-6 primary students come together so they
can be challenged and encouraged by enthusiastic
specialist teachers from a secondary campus
while working with their peers, to accentuate their
primary studies. Students have the unique opportunity to work with staff and students in areas
such as Science & Agriculture, Marine Science,
Performing Arts, Digital Design & Multimedia, F1
in Schools and Aviation. As a school (and cluster)
we were eager to embrace the philosophy and as
such looked for opportunities to provide a seamless transition from primary to secondary school.
Successful completion of the program ensures
students will transition seamlessly into the Junior
Secondary school with a greater ability to engage
in higher order thinking and problem solving.
PROJECT LEARNINGS
Noosa High identified that we have some very
exciting programs to offer students, and highly
specialist teachers with a wealth of knowledge
and passion for these areas that primary students could benefit from.
the opportunity to immerse themselves in an
area that the student is particularly interested in,
they will develop and hone their higher order
thinking and problem solving skills. Each project
provides students with the opportunity to work
individually and collaboratively.
There is a focus on the development of higher
order thinking and problem solving skills by
providing students with opportunities to work as
individuals and also collaboratively by creating,
improving, planning, inventing, proposing, justifying and presenting various aspects of their projects. Engaging students as early as possible in
programs at the high school that had academic
rigour, were of interest to the students and were
linked to (but extended) their current learning are
the core priority of these programs. Apart from
Junior Summit students communicate with their
Project Leader via email, phone, post and will
visit the high school (Cooroy and/or Pomona
Campus) for half/full day sessions each term
throughout the year. Noosa High’s feeder primary schools, staff, students and parents recognise
that Junior Summit offers a very exciting opportunity for what can be done with academically
talented students. The Art & Science of Teaching provides the framework for the delivery of
authentic and rich learning experiences that
promote high expectations and deepen student’s
knowledge in their chosen project area. The
Learning Place assists with the communication of
information and tasks between the teachers,
students and parents.
