Division, may your days be merry and bright,
and may all your garbage bags be light! Have a
green holiday season!
A reminder of what’s changing and what’s not in March 2017
Holiday collection
With Christmas Day and New Years Day falling on Sundays this year, there will be no changes
to curbside collection during the holiday season. Please put your items to the curb by 7 a.m. on
your regular collection day.
Christmas tree collection will run from January 2 to 13, 2017 on your regular collection day.
If you get weekly blue box collection, you can place your Christmas tree to the curb for collection.
Please remember to:
• Keep it natural. Remove all decorations, lights
and tree stand. Do not wrap in a plastic bag.
• Place it out at the curb by 7 a.m. on your collection day.
• Do not place your tree on top of or behind
snowbanks.
• If your tree is longer than 1.8 meters (6 feet),
please cut it in half.
Holiday waste prep - what goes where
and why
Don’t waste your holiday! Recycle all you can through your
green bin and blue box. By sorting properly and recycling
more, you can reduce your garbage by over 50 per cent!
Below are some items that we get asked about a lot during
the holidays.
Item
How to prepare
Why?
Corrugated cardboard
Flatten and bundle no larger than
75 x 75 x 20 cm (30 x 30 x 8 inches)
before you place it beside your
blue box.
To fit in the side hopper of the
collection truck. Also, preparing
it correctly reduces litter.
Do not overfill your green bin or
exceed the maximum weight limit
of 23 kg (50 pounds).
To reduce litter and pests.
Excess food scraps
Styrofoam - packaging
blocks only (no
peanuts, food-grade)
Batteries - single use
or rechargeable
Place extra food scraps in a paper
or certified compostable plastic bag
and put on top of your green bin.
Or pick up another green bin from
our Cambridge (201 Savage Drive)
or Waterloo (925 Erb Street West,
Gate 1) Monday to Friday
8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Bring it to our Cambridge (201
Savage Drive) or Waterloo (925
Erb Street West, Gate 2) Monday
to Saturday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and
put it in the designated bin. Fees
will apply.
Drop off to local businesses or
our Household Hazardous Waste
depots in Cambridge (201 Savage
Drive) or Waterloo (925 Erb Street
West, Gate 2) Monday to Saturday
7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The weight limit helps prevent
injuries of collection crews.
Recycling food scraps using
your green bin rather than
throwing them in the garbage,
extends the life of our landfill,
creates compost and reduces
greenhouse gasses.
Styrofoam recycling end
markets are not stable enough
to add this material to the blue
box.
Batteries are hazardous waste
and can be recycled through
drop-off programs.
What about wrapping paper - is it recyclable?
Yes, if it is:
• Newspaper, paper wrap, tissue paper
• Plain Christmas cards
• Paper gift bags (remove handles)
• Boxboard or corrugated cardboard
Put these in your blue box. Bag paper. Flatten
and size cardboard and boxboard.
No, if it is:
•
Bows, ribbons
•
Bubble wrap
•
Foil paper
•
Cellophane
•
Foil paper
•
Styrofoam
Waste-free holiday tip: Consider using alternatives such as reusable cloth bags, or make the
wrapping part of the present (e.g. towel, tea towel, sweater, scarf, purse, reusable plastic bin,
clothes basket, pillow case, etc.)
Do you still have yard waste?
Yard waste collection has ended for this year. If you still have
yard waste, please recycle it by bringing it in to our Cambridge
(201 Savage Drive) or Waterloo (925 Erb Street West, Gate 2)
transfer stations Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fees will
apply. If you set it out to the curb, it will be collected as garbage
which will fill up our landfill.
It’s not a party without a green bin
Invite a green bin to your holiday celebrations. It will make prep
and clean-up easy since it can take:
• All food scraps such as peelings, meat bones, turnip, fruitcake
• Paper plates, paper napkins, paper towels, facial tissues
For the full list of acceptable items, check out Green Bin that! on
our website.
Winter set out reminder
As the weather is getting chillier, prevent the contents of your green bin from
freezing to your green bin by:
• placing a paper egg carton or paper beverage take-out tray at
the bottom of your green bin
• use liner bags - either paper or certified compostable plastic
• set it out by 7 a.m. on your collection day (rather than the night
before).
See other tips on our website.
