Cottonwood Public Library Newsletter
Jul/Aug/Sep 2016, Volume 20, Issue 3
Message From Our Library Manager
Starting July 1, 2016, the current issues of The New York Times, USA Today and Wall Street
Journal newspapers will be behind the circulation desk and will need to be signed out. We
seem to have incurred a lot of theft lately of those newspapers and have received many
complaints.
On a much lighter note, the library has received a sub-grant from LSTA for non-fiction
AV2 Beginning books. Anne Roberts, a part time library clerk, applied for the grant for
Youth Services. Parents had expressed a need for books for beginner readers. Books will
be purchased that promote the “Ready to Read,” “Read Aloud 20 Minutes” and the “1,000
Books before Kindergarten” campaigns. The books will have an AV2 media component
that will work on a computer. These books come alive with online audio and visual
features like videos, audio and quizzes. The activities provide opportunities for children to
analyze and evaluate information and concepts covered in the corresponding book. They
meet the National Education Standards for grades K to 12, as set out by the National
Science Teachers Association (NSTA), the National Council of Teachers of English
(NCTE), in addition to curriculum standards defined by the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS). Our thanks to the Library Services and Technology Act and the Institute of Museum and Library Services for this funding.
Sometime within the month of July, we will purchase a low-vision keyboard for a
designated computer. The keyboard has larger, easier to see keys for those patrons who
have vision impairment. This will be another service that we can offer to our patrons.
Interesting statistics for you! The following information is from the time period of January
2016 to May 2016. Items circulated: 95,690, Internet Usage: 15,453 sessions, holds placed
by our patrons: 18,999. We were open for business for 127 days during this time period.

Rev. Anthony Galbicka
Val Chanda
The Protestant Reformation was one of the most
significant revolutions in
history. Celebrating the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation reveals
the context, content, and consequence of the Reformation. The
reader will discover the six
prime events that contributed to
the success of the Reformation, the seven major
players
in
it
and
its
fourfold
consequences. This work provides both a clear and
understandable view of the grainy truths of the Bible as well as a unique and fresh focus on pragmatic
Christianity.
Reverend Anthony
Galbicka is a board-certified life
coach and author residing in the
Verde Valley. He spent twentyseven years in the youth ministry
and started two nondenominational churches. His mission statement
is: To advance the world. Galbicka will be signing his
books on Saturday, July 30th from 10:30 to 12 p.m.
Val “Ginny” Chanda, taught Creative Writing,
Shakespeare, and other English courses at the
Verde Valley Campus of
Yavapai College. Although a
life-long writer, it was upon
retirement from full-time teaching that she was able to begin
publishing her novels, beginning
with
the
Psy Mind
series, thrillers set in the near
future and featuring telepathic characters. In
2014 she started releasing the Elsewhere mysteries
which introduced readers to the crime-solving
adventures of the title characters, Zorn and
Grayall. They are a mismatched pair who must
form an uneasy alliance to save a boy wrongly
accused of murder. The first Elsewhere novel,
Zorn and Grayall Find Murder by the Way, was
named a finalist in the New Mexico-Arizona
Book Awards for 2015.
J. A. Ja nc e
New York Times best-selling
author will be giving a talk and
signing her books at the
Cottonwood Recreation Center
on Thursday, September 8th
from 2—4 p.m. Her new book
Downfall is the 18th book of
the Joanna Brady Series. Jance
has written over 55 books
including a poetry collection
called After the Fire.
The series continued with Zorn and Grayall
Encounter the Elements of Murder. This summer Val
released the newest book in the series, Zorn and
Grayall Defy Murder by Magic. Elsewhere may
be another world. Or another time. But surely
murder remains the same. Or does it? In this
book the characters confront an unexplainable
death. Was it murder by magic? That is the
question Zorn and Grayall
must answer.
Val will be signing all of her
novels at the Cottonwood
Library on August 27th
from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00
p.m..

HOPE For
the Future
By Margo Mitchell
I attended a graduation ceremony at ASU in May.
The university has become so huge that large public
venues were required to accommodate the numbers
of graduates. The traditional commencement and
convocation programs did not include the names of
all those graduating, for lack of room.
The ceremony I attended was of the College of
Public Service and Community Solutions, which includes the following career paths:
Community Resources & Development
Criminology & Criminal Justice
Public Affairs
Social Work
Briefly, the goals of these areas focus on the “social,
economic, environmental and cultural well-being of
our local and global communities, developing outstanding public leaders who are committed to making
a difference in our world and who are prepared to
meet the demands and substantial challenges of the
future, and promoting social, political and economic
4
justice with special emphasis on populations of the
Southwest”.
That is quite a set of goals, and I was humbled by
these intentions, and, quite frankly, embarrassed by
my sloth.
During the event, graduates were asked to stand to
be honored for achieving some special award, such as
Overall Outstanding Graduate Student, Overall Outstanding Undergraduate Student, etc. Students who
served in the military were asked to stand. They were
many, and were generously applauded. But what
caught my attention were those asked to stand who
were the very first person in their family to have graduated college. Nearly a thousand people rose! And
of every possible color of skin! This impressed me
more than anything else during the event. It gave me
such hope, that people are still moving upwards, to
take on challenging tasks, to make life better for those
who are struggling.
Remember there are countless young people with
unselfish goals, whose aim is to improve this world
and to help others. This is THEIR time, to grow and
try to build a better society for all of us to share.
Young people are achieving what was not possible for
their parents, and their children will do even better.
Set aside anger, fear, and nostalgia, and instead raise
the banner of HOPE for the future, for the sake of all
humanity and for our world. And if we help these
new graduates reach their goals, everyone wins!
Seed Library Reopens
September 17th
The Cottonwood Public Library Seed Library will be reopening for the fall planting season!
Saturday mornings from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. we will be open with our great volunteers who are ready to answer
questions and help with choices on what seeds to plant now. We could not offer these great seeds, free of
charge, without the generous donations from seed companies, but especially our local donors. Ace Hardware
stores in Cottonwood, Sedona, Village of Oak Creek and Camp Verde and Windmill Gardens Nursery in
Cornville have all donated seeds. Thanks to all our local sponsors!
