Weekly Bulletin Week Commencing 7th November 2016
Headteacher’s News
It has been a busy start to the second half of the term with lots going
on across the school. We are now starting to prepare the pupils
for our Christmas events (The Nativity and The Advent Beach Hut
event ); more details will be shared with you all soon. We are doing
things slightly differently this year. The Nativity which will be held at
St Leonards Church on Thursday 8th December will involve pupils
in Upper Nursery, Reception, Year One and Year Two only. Pupils
in Years Three, Four, Five and Six will be participating in our event
held on the evening of the 2nd December on Hove Seafront- The
Advent Beach Event. We always enjoy the Christmas festivities at
Deepdene and I look forward to seeing you at these events. Year
Four parents will also be invited to watch their children perform in
The Bethlehem Star on Monday 5th December.
Once again , apologies about the Christmas card ordering process.
Having been very happy with the ease of the process last year we
were confident to go with the same supplier. It has not been as
straightforward this year. However, please do not let this put you
off placing an order! You are now required to complete the slip
and return to Ms Taylor with your child’s artwork by FRIDAY 11TH
NOVEMBER.
Whilst we are on the subject of reminders, please place your school
photograph orders with Ms Taylor by Friday 18th November to
ensure delivery before Christmas.
We have a lovely week ahead of us; some of our Year 6 girls will
be at Roedean on Thursday for the first stage of the process of
application and assessment for Year Seven entry. I am particularly
looking forward to Mrs Stoner’s Remembrance Assembly in the
school hall on Friday as I have heard some beautiful singing from the
pupils in preparation. At the end of this very special assembly I shall
be presenting our senior pupils with their badges of responsibility.

left us 4 years ago! They all threw themselves into helping in the
classroom which brought back lots of memories.
Because many of the children will have attended Firework
celebrations over the weekend, we took the opportunity to learnt
the Firework Safety Code and also how to care for our pets during
this celebration.
This week we will be going on a walk to see how the world around
us has changed as we progress into the autumn season.

Year 1 News
It is wonderful to see that Year One have returned to school after
the half-term break well rested and really enthusiastic about
their learning. The children enjoyed listening to the story of the
Gunpowder Plot in their RE lesson last week. They loved seeing
the sparklers during the lesson and learned that Guy Fawkes was
originally a religious celebration. We enjoyed an animated video
during our E-Safety lesson in class and a very informative E-Safety
assembly last week. The children are now very conscious of the
need to remain safe online.

Year 2:
Reception News
Last week we began some of our new topics for the term.
Last week the children in Reception were very busy learning about
the Hindu Festival Diwali, ‘The Festival of Light’. We listened to the
story of Rama and Sita and we painted King Ravana the King of
the Demons with 10 heads! We also made Diva Lamps out of clay
and painted them.
In Geography we have started to look at the town of Tocuaro (in
Mexico). The children learnt about where Mexico is in the world,
and some of the physical features of Mexico (volcanoes and the
underwater sculptures in Cancun). We have looked briefly at the
weather and food, but will be looking at this in more depth.
We also had 3 special visits from passed pupils, last year’s Head
Girl Mollie came in to see us, as well as Yasmin and Natalia who
In Science we will be beginning our topic of electricity and electrical
circuits.
For History we are continuing looking at seaside holidays in the past.
Our RE topic this term is celebrations and, and last week we looked
at the different celebrations that people participate in.
Last week it was Internet Safety week, and the children watched
an interesting video giving them tips about how to stay safe online.
These include: Not talking to strangers, not giving out any personal
information, being nice to people online and if they are ever unsure
or worried to tell an adult they trust. The children have been invited
to enter a competition to design a poster for the school stating the
importance of E-Safety.
In Literacy we were practising writing instructions using the correct
vocabulary and punctuation.
For maths we were learning to double and half numbers, using times
tables, and by partitioning two digit numbers.
Thank you to everyone that bought vouchers in to school from
‘Sainsburys Active Kids’ at the end of last term. We are very excited
for the new playground equipment to arrive this week. Please keep
your eyes open for when Sainsburys start this again next year so that
we can collect even more vouchers for new equipment next year.

Year 3 News
Year 3 had a great time at Butser Ancient Farm on Friday, despite
the rain! After sitting around the fire in the recreated Stone Age hut
they were taken out to the archaeological pits and began digging.
They soon found lots of things of interest and were then able to use
their skills to identify them. Later, they were able to use flint tools
to complete their own chalk carving, just like people in the Stone
Age would have done. Finally, they made a piece of Stone Age
jewellery from cordage and began thinking about the end of the
Stone Age and the beginning of the Bronze Age. They all had the
opportunity to create a Bronze Age ring as well. The children all
behaved brilliantly and asked lots of great questions.

E-Safety Week
As technology embeds itself into our lives, we find more and more
that we cannot do without it. Whether finding out information,
keeping in touch with family or just for entertainment, the Internet
is increasingly an essential fact of life for many of us. With this in
mind, we at Deepdene take seriously the task of helping our pupils
understand how to manage their presence and their interactions on
the World Wide Web and their phones in a good and safe way, so
that they feel comfortable and so they automatically act with a similar
awareness of safe behaviour, just as when they are crossing the
road, walking through town or playing in the park.
Our assembly
We started last week with a whole-school assembly where we
discovered that a person we meet online, like “Julie, the pop star”,
might not actually be all they claim to be! We learnt that it was
important to keep personal information Safe from strangers, to
avoid Meeting up with friends who we only know through online
interactions, to not Accept Anything sent in an email (such as links,
pictures or downloads) unless we really know and trust the sender,
to consider whether a person is Reliable, and if in doubt about
anything we meet online, to simply Tell a parent or teacher.
SMART rules: keep info Safe – don’t Meet up – don’t Accept
anything – are they Reliable – Tell an adult
The competition
All the classes looked at different aspects of this topic in their ICT
lessons last week. As an extra special treat, they all have the chance
to earn prizes by creating an E-Safety Poster, showing what they
have learnt and what the most important rules are. Ms Brown and
Mrs Croucher will be judging the competition and will choose the
best poster from each year group to be entered into the Golden
Rules raffle at the end of the term, and to have their work displayed
with the other winners in school and on our website. Everyone who
enters will be given a small treat too which all the children are very
excited about! I am sure the posters will be both thoughtful and
beautiful, and I can’t wait to see them all!
Year 5 News
Welcome back to all of the Year 5 pupils. We had a busy first week
back. In English, we are learning about a new genre: fables. The
children have responded really enthusiastically to the topic and
have enjoyed discussing the morals attached to the stories that
we’ve shared. In Science, the class had an unexpected visit from
Miss Brown who popped in to see the pupils learning all about
germination. There are lots of pots of soil dotted around the room,
so clearly there is an experiment in progress! I look forward to
hearing all about the outcome.
Year 5 prefect duties began today (Monday 7th November) under
the guidance of our Head Girl and Head Boy. The children will be
starting their lunchtime duties in the dining hall and will also visit
the class which they have been attached to in order to be reading
buddies for some of the younger children in the school.
Finally, well done to Ethan who has produced a lovely match report
about the Shoreham College fixture. You can read all about it in
this bulletin.
Mrs Croucher
Year 6 News
Welcome back, everyone! Last week, the Year 6 pupils had a
welcome visitor. Past pupil, Mollie Bishop, kindly agreed to come
in to talk to the children about what life is like at secondary school.
She shared her experiences at Brighton and Hove High School
and spoke enthusiastically about the transition from Year 6 to
Year 7. The Year 6 pupils responded brilliantly, asking thoughtful
questions about life after Deepdene and Mollie gave some great
advice about how to approach the final year at primary school. Her
biggest tip was about staying on top of homework which struck a
chord with lots of the children!
Reminder:
Tuesday lunchtimes at 1.30pm – English Entrance Examination
tutorial group for pupils in the Year 6 classroom.

The football match
against shoreham
College was a learning
curve!
Sidney started the
match as a left back
and did well. We then
moved him to left wing
back so he could run really
fast onto the ball and run back to defend.
The other person who was amazing was Luca because
now he calls for the ball more and is more positionally
aware. As captain i was pleased with how both of
them performed.
For future matches we need to work on our kicking
because the keeper needs to kick to our strikers. This
will help our attacking strategy the “counter attack”.
Overall we played well as it was Shoreham’s most
physcial football team and we had to fight for the ball!
