We are proud to note that Orchard Village is more than a recipient of support – it is itself a significant and meaningful community provider. Our community-integrated group residences diversify our neighborhoods. Our growing vocational program supplies area businesses with loyal, capable and hard-working employees. In-home services bring much-needed respite, therapeutic and other resources to dozens of family homes. And our Academy prepares young adults to become engaged, productive and informed citizens. “To whom much is given, much will be required.” We are grateful to have been given the community’s generous support and, in return, remain committed to providing significant and meaningful contributions to our clients and communities. Orchard Village continues to play an essential role within the community by serving as a valued and worthy partner to families, employers, schools, neighborhoods and fellow service providers. Working together, we help to ensure fulfilling lives for the individuals with developmental challenges under our care. We remain committed to providing our deserving clients with the highest quality support possible. Orchard Village ended fiscal year 2014 in a solid financial position, with sufficient cash on hand and a growing endowment to allow for growth and enable us to withstand fiscal uncertainties. Once again, Orchard Village successfully navigated the sometimes challenging economic and administrative—even agricultural—climate in Illinois this year: Orchard Village Board of Directors FY2014 Chairman Donald Bielinski Vice Chair Stephen Green Treasurer David Ellis Secretary Catherine Brandell Directors Robert Bell Ayad Jacob Jack Kalina Kathleen Knight Madeline Krey Howard Meyer Donna Pleason Dominic Verlotta Steve Witz • State funding, essential to our operations, proved in the main steady and reliable. • State bureaus charged with evaluating Orchard Village for accreditation, licensure, certification and quality management gave us extremely and uniformly high marks this year. • The organization’s important role in the community gained further affirmation in the form of generous donations from many individuals and corporations at our fundraising events; new grants from nine foundations; and renewed grants from eight other foundations. • More than a dozen area businesses joined ongoing employer partners of Orchard Village in agreeing to hire individuals with developmental disabilities under our care and guidance. • Tri-annual negotiations with our service union partner were constructive and deemed a success by all involved. • And for the second consecutive growing season, we successfully planted, cultivated and harvested a half-acre urban produce farm on our Skokie campus—a project that is, itself, the seedling of an ongoing, revenue-generating social enterprise for the organization. The immediate future looks bright for Orchard Village. After a thorough search, the organization has hired a proven executive, Martin (Marty) Oliff, to serve as President & CEO. Marty’s long-tenured experience in nonprofit human services will be instrumental in providing the highest quality of service to our clients while remaining a critical community asset. As always, we are grateful for the dedication of our staff of nearly 140 full and part-time professionals; our committed and tireless Board of Directors; and the more than 120 loyal volunteers on whom we depend. And we extend our sincere gratitude to the generous donors, grantors and contributors who validate our important work. Thank you for embracing Orchard Village. With gratitude, Donald Bielinski CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD asset community | growth provider support partner Last year, Orchard Village clients blossomed in many ways. Here are just four examples: Shawn, Vocational Services Shawn, 39, has been an Orchard Village client since 1993, when he began working at Dominick’s as a bagger and cart attendant. For 20 distinguished years, he was a valued member of his work team, a familiar face to many store customers and a recipient of numerous accolades for his strong work ethic and outgoing personality. After Dominick’s ceased operations at the end of 2013, Shawn struggled at first to cope with his first period of unemployment in two decades. Working with the supportive Orchard Village Vocational team, he soon found work in the suitable and recognizable environs of a Garden Fresh Market in Northbrook. Shawn is thriving again as an experienced bagger and cart attendant. He loves the new job and is working hard to serve his community and achieve independence. Juwairiyah, In-Home Services Juwairiyah, a kindergartner, began receiving the services of her Orchard Village Respite Worker in 2013. During their initial weekly interactions she was extremely quiet and aloof. Over time, and with the Respite Worker’s patient guidance, Juwairiyah’s confidence and creativity have grown dramatically. She now jumps right into such activities as kite flying, various art projects, card games (Zingo and Uno are favorites) and her workbooks. She has become mindful about “please” and “thank you” (and politely reminds others when they forget). Her verbal skills have improved and she is quickly learning and remembering new words. And she loves books and storytelling time. Now when Sunday comes around, her visiting Respite Worker can count on two things: a giant smile and a friendly greeting. Victor, Residential and Vocational Services Victor, age 32, became an Orchard Village client in 2013 after living with relatives. He is a resident of the Community Integrated Living Arrangement (CILA) home on Oleander Avenue in Niles, one of ten 24-hour supervised residences operated by Orchard Village. Victor loves to follow sports and is a wiz at statistics, standings and schedules. He is participating in sports as well – Special Olympics, the Wednesday night bowling program of the Maine-Niles Association of Special Recreation, the Orchard Village Run/Walk and the adaptive tennis workshops run by the USTA at Orchard Village.Victor currently works at Shore Training Center, a supported employment workshop, but has begun exploratory, pre-vocational tasks (including work on the Farm at Orchard Village) under the guidance of the Vocational staff to determine how his interests and abilities might relate to future competitive employment in the community. John, Orchard Academy John, age 21, enrolled at the Academy in 2010. At that time he was very quiet, socially unskilled and disinclined to join in conversation with classmates. With the patient encouragement of faculty and staff, including a speech therapist and social worker, John began to gain confidence. His job readiness coursework, along with three valuable internships, prepared him for the kind of social interaction required for success in the workplace. Indeed, John recently obtained competitive employment at Walmart while, simultaneously, moving into his own apartment. As his graduation from Orchard Academy approaches, John has been enlivening Monday morning assemblies by asking his peers and staff about their weekends, about computer problems he can help them with, and about movies they’ve seen. Now embarked on an independent life, John has truly found his voice. growth growth provider community provider community || asset asset support support Special Event Special Event Committees Committees FY2014 FY2014 Auxiliary Auxiliary Donna Ossorio Donna Ossorio President President Sandy Ellliott Sandy Ellliott Anne Clinton Grant AnneJulie Clinton Grant Hagwood Julie Hagwood Madeline Krey Madeline Krey Therese Rakushin ThereseSchwander Rakushin Annette Annette Carol Schwander Schwander CarolSari Schwander Spector SariWineberg Spector Marcia Marcia Wineberg Marguerite Wendell Marguerite Wendell Golf Golf Mike Leong Mike Leong Chairperson Chairperson Dave Carter Dave Carter Arnold Freeman Arnold Freeman Stephen Green Cocktails Stephen Green forCocktails a Cause Jake Goldstein for a Cause JakeSchickling Goldstein Kelli Beckel John Kelli Beckel John Schickling Lynn DeMeulemeester DeMeulemeester Diversey Blossom Gala LynnMichelle Michelle Blossom Gala Casey Diversey Flaherty Norman Andrews Casey Flaherty Norman Andrews Lori Funteas Catherine Brandell Lori Catherine Brandell JenFunteas Gentile Carolyn Eller Jen Gutrich Gentile Carolyn Eller Bridget Lynda Evans Bridget Gutrich Lynda Knight Evans Kirby Johnson Kathy Kirby Johnson Kathy Knight Mary Katris Madeline Krey Mary Katris Madeline Krey Nancy Palella Lyndsay Larson Nancy Lyndsay Larson CherylPalella Pisha Donna Pleason CherylSaurer Pisha DonnaRakushin Pleason Michael Therese Michael Saurer Therese Rakushin Mallory Sitkowski Robin Robinson MalloryRyan Sitkowski Robin Ellie Robinson Smith Snell Ryan Vavrik Smith EllieStone Snell Stacy Colin Stacy Vavrik Colin Stone Wendi Wilson Shari Vass Wendi Wilson ShariVavrik Vass Stacy Stacy Vavrik Motorcycle Rally Motorcycle Rally James Thrush James Thrush Chairperson Chairperson Pat Davidson Pat Davidson Mark Laube Mark Napier Laube Spring Spring Napier 5K/3K Race to Embrace 5K/3K RaceCharles to Embrace Porter Charles Porter Mary Robbins Mary Robbins partner Statement of Activities for Year Ended June 30, 2014 Statement of Activities for Year Ended June 30, 2014 REVENUE REVENUE Public Support Public Support Direct Contributions Direct Contributions Foundations and Trusts Foundations Trusts Total Publicand Support Total Public Support $ $ $ $ 331,823 331,823 174,557 174,557 506,380 506,380 Direct Program Support Direct Program Support Fees and Grants from Government Agencies Fees and Grants from Program Service Fees Government Agencies Program Service Fees Support Total Direct Program Total Direct Program Support $ 5,097,241 $ 5,097,241 969,175 969,175 $ 6,066,416 $ 6,066,416 Other Revenue Other BuildingRevenue Fire Settlement Building Fire Settlement Interest, Rental, Other Interest, Rental, Other Total Other Revenue Total Other Revenue $ $$ $$ $ Total Revenue Total Revenue $ 7,073,687 $ 7,073,687 EXPENSES EXPENSES Program Services Program Services Administration and General Administration Fundraising and General Fundraising Total Expenses Total Expenses $ 5,226,266 $ 5,226,266 666,165 666,165 393,710 393,710 $ 6,286,141 $ 6,286,141 Excess of Revenues Over Expenses Excess of Revenues Over Expenses $ $ 787,546 787,546 Change in Net Assets for Year Ended June 30, 2014 Change in Net Assets for Year Ended June 30, 2014 Net Assets at Beginning of Year Net Net Assets Assets at at Beginning End of Yearof Year Net Assets at EndAssets, of YearExcess (Deficiency) Change in Net Change in Net Assets, Excess (Deficiency) $ $$ $$ $ 2,566,897 2,566,897 3,354,441 3,354,441 787,544 787,544 Government Government Program Fees Program Fees Public and Other Public and Other 72% Sources of Revenue 72% Sources of Revenue 14% 14% 14% 14% Program Program Administrative Administrative Fundraising Fundraising 83% Operating Expenses 83% Operating Expenses 11% 11% 6% 6% 366,902 366,902 133,989 133,989 500,891 500,891 growth community | support provider asset partner CORPORATIONS, FOUNDATIONS & ORGANIZATIONS A Friend of Orchard Village A.
