Doors and Windows
From an early age, children are fascinated by doors and windows, mainly because their
curiosity is aroused. When a door or window is opened, the beginning of a new place or
area is created; inside or outside, upstairs or downstairs, and the child is able to explore and
find out more about a familiar environment, or one that is totally new.
This week, through doors and windows we see new situations e.g. a hospital kitchen, life in a
block of flats, people who pass by a window. We make a simple, large, cardboard house
and open it to reveal familiar rooms. Each day we sing the song "In and out the Windows”.

IDEAS FOR LATER
Make a house, a block of flats, a
caravan or any dwelling you like using
recycled boxes and tape. Friends or
family could help you make box
furniture and you could decorate the
walls with pictures or home-made
wallpaper. Have fun playing imaginary
games with a friend or a toy in your
box dwelling!
If you have a pet at home, give it some
extra care – make sure its bed is clean,
change the water in its water bowl or
give it a brush. If you don’t have a pet
at home, look after a pet toy.

MAKE AND DO
How to Make a Window Picture
You will need:
A3 coloured cardboard
Ruler
Pencil
Scissors
Clear contact
Coloured paper, crepe paper, cellophane, tissue paper
Use a ruler, pencil and scissors to create two identical window frames from A3 coloured
cardboard.
Place the window frames side-by-side on clear contact (with the backing still on) and trace
around them. Cut out the contact, remove the backing and place the cardboard frames
back in the same position.
Use coloured paper, crepe paper, cellophane and tissue paper to make colourful shapes to
display in your window frame. You might like to cut out different coloured flowers and leaves
or tear different types of paper into strips. Arrange them on the sticky contact of one
window. Once you’re happy with your design, fold the contact over so the window frames
meet up and the contact sticks together.

IDEAS FOR LATER
Next time you are near a harbour or
river, count how many different sorts of
boats you can see. When you get
home, make a simple boat from a milk
bottle. Make sure you leave the lid on
so your boat can float! Play with your
home-made boat in the bath or a
water trough.
Make a sand painting! Cover a piece
of paper or cardboard with paste, then
sprinkle sand all over it. Add any
beach-y things you can think of!

How to Make a Jack-in-the-Box
You will need:
A small cardboard box, such as a gift box
Different coloured A4 paper
Scissors
Tape
Crayons
Cut a piece of A4 coloured paper in half, lengthways. Tape the two lengths together so you
have a long strip of coloured paper.
Fold the strip of paper over and under, concertina style, to create springy body for your
Jack-in-the-Box.
Stick one end of the spring to the bottom of a cardboard box.
Cut a round circle from coloured paper for a face. Draw on eyes, a nose and a smiling
mouth. Stick to the top of the paper spring.
Cut a triangle from coloured paper for a hat. Stick to the head of your Jack-in-the-Box. Stick
the tip of the triangle hat to the lid of the cardboard box.
Put the lid back on. When you open the box, your Jack-in-the-Box will spring out! Ask friends
and family members to open the box and surprise them!
