Mechanical Inserting
Clear Identification
The Press production equipment allows the insertion of advertising brochures or
booklets mechanically at approximately 30,000 copies per hour.
Each pallet must have the printer's letterhead on at least 2 sides. The letterheads must
display the following information:
The inserting material is placed into hoppers, which separates each insert and feeds it
into a single gripper conveyor, which will deliver it into the newspaper.
• Fairfax Media Web Printing, Publishing Department, 14 Logistics Drive, Harewood,
Christchurch, Att: Barry Dyer, ph 027 273 9670, and the publication date for insertion
The reason for such detailed packing and delivery instructions is to ensure we receive
the inserts in the best possible condition. Inserts, which are damaged, poorly packed
or not completely dry, will not feed through the hoppers.
• The number of inserts packed on each pallet or placed in each box on a pallet should
be clearly indicated on the side of the pallet or boxes
Good quality inserts will:
• The full name of the advertiser
• Ensure each copy of the newspaper has an insert
• Keep our customers happy
• Prevent damage to machinery
• Prevent production delays
In addition a consignment note detailing the number of pallets or boxes dispatched
and the total number of inserts must accompany all deliveries. This will allow Press
staff to verify the correct number of inserts that have been received for insertion.
Packing Specifications
• Individual inserts must be capable of slipping against facing surfaces of other inserts
and not cling/stick to each other after packaging
• Ensure ink is totally dry before stacking, boxing or strapping. Ideally a slipping agent
should be added to the ink to reduce any chances of adhesion between inserts
• Make sure that inserts are kept perfectly flat, with tight folds. Inserts should not
be over strapped that results in shape distortion or palletised in a manner which
distorts their shape. Curled edges or ballooned inserts will be rejected
• Bundle turns:20 pages plus must be turned in multiples of 100
18 pages or under must be turned in multiples of 200
• A minimum fee of $400 will be charged if The Press is required to ‘re-bundle’ any
material that does not meet our specifications
• Pallets should be strapped four ways
• The (estimated) weight of each pallet

General Conditions
A sample or accurate mock-up of an intended insert must be provided for approval
prior to acceptance of the order. Any insert that The Press considers unsuitable for
inserting because of either poor presentation, not meeting the required specifications
or unsuitable content will be rejected. The Press is not however responsible for
proofing or checking content. Any costs associated with rejection of inserts will be
charged to the advertiser. The Press will use all reasonable endeavours to ensure insert
material reaches the hands of the newspaper subscriber but has no liability in the
event that a subscriber discards or rejects the insert material or requests that it not
be delivered with the newspaper. Inserts are accepted subject to the condition that
rates may vary with up to 28 days notice. Though care is taken to ensure insertion
according to instructions, The Press has no liability for any cost or claim that arises
from omission or misplacement of inserts, whether through mechanical failure or
