Controlling Lawn Diseases and Lawn Fungus
W e have had an extremely rainy Spring in the
South Jersey area this year. W hile the rain
nourishes the lawn...too much rain causes a
prime breeding ground for many common lawn
diseases. Almost all lawn diseases are caused
by fungi, and the heavy Spring rains are causing
lawn fungus to occur much earlier this season.
Most fungi reproduce by forming millions of
microscopic spores. These spores reside on
grass blade surfaces. The spores germinate
with favorable moisture levels and turn into tiny
threads called hyphae. Eventually, the hyphae
grow into a tangled mass called mycelium.
Mycelium branch out and a lawn fungus begins
to spread and destroy the lawn.
to grow out. W hen mowing, always bag the
infected grass blade clippings. DO NOT leave
the infected grass clippings lay on your lawn.
Also, try to water your lawn early in the day and
avoid evening waterings.

Enough of that mumbo-jumbo....the bottom line
is that a lawn fungus can attack, spread quickly
and be very destructive to YOUR LAW N!
Lawn fungus can happen to any lawn at any
time and there are literally hundreds of different
varieties of lawn diseases in our region.
So, what should you do?

Monitor your lawn on a regular basis and if you
notice any unusual coloring or spotting, please
notify us as soon as possible.
Some lawn diseases seem easy to identify,
however, many look similar and may take a
trained eye to properly identify.
Once the lawn disease is identified, a premium
fungicide treatment, in the correct amount
should be applied as soon as possible.
Fungicides are very effective against most
forms of lawn fungus and they are almost
always applied on a curative basis.
Please be aware that the price of fungicide
products has substantially increased and a
premium fungicide treatment is relatively
expensive. However, if you do have a lawn
fungus, a properly-timed fungicide treatment
may be well worth the investment.
Once the fungicide treatment is applied, it will
take several weeks for the infected grass blades

and you notice dry lawn patches, check to
make sure your sprinkler heads are working
