Pastor’s Report – December was a busy time in the church. I made an extra push to see our homebound and hospitalized
folks in the lead up to Christmas. In addition to normal worship services, this year had three Wednesday night Advent
services, the children’s program, and Christmas Eve service. Advent services averaged about 40 people and Christmas
program was 65. Monies collected during Advent services and designated gifts raised over $1,600 for World Hunger.
The ELCA begins requesting year end reports regarding the congregation for 2016. Here are a few numbers I had a chance
to look at so far:
Baptisms:
4
Weddings:
2
Funerals:
None
Attendance: Average of 96 (slightly down from 98 in 2014 and 99 in 2015)
A quick look at 2016 Financials, it looks like we are under budget in terms of expenditures and slightly ahead in terms of
giving. A special thanks to everyone involved in the special events during Christmas, the leadership with the Children’s
Program and Judy and the choir for their work on the Cantata. See Pastor’s report for detail on Helping Hands and upcoming calendar.

NC Synod assembly June 2-3: We need one male and one female to represent Holly Grove as voting members at the 2017 synod assembly in Greensboro, and
we can send additional young adult voting members too. Synod assembly is a
great opportunity to get a glimpse into the exciting ways we partner with other
congregations across the state and the country. Please speak with Pastor Matt if
you would be willing to serve!
Summer Camp Early Bird deadline March 15: Thinking about sending a young person to camp? You should be! Outdoor ministry is one of the most effective (and
most fun!) ways of instilling faith in young people! You can often register up
through the beginning of summer, but to get the lowest price, register by March
15th. The church will contribute $200 toward costs at Lutheridge, Lutherock, or
Agape for congregation members too! Just register and pay on your own, print
off the confirmations, and get it to pastor Matt so the church can reimburse the
$200!
Flowers Schedules: There are still spots left to sponsor the Mother's Rose garden
or provide altar flowers in the next year, including several dates in April. If
you would like to sign up, please contact the church office. A highlighted
schedule of open dates is available in the hallway outside of the parlor.
New Members March 26th: Plan to be with us in worship to welcome new members officially joining Holly Grove!
Holly Grove Lutheran Church Evangelism:

Instant Oatmeal or Grits
Small Juice Boxes
Small Jars of Peanut Butter
Gallon Ziploc Bags
Any donation of money or food are welcome and appreciated!
Thanks to the Senior High Sunday School Class for helping out with this
project! Please prayerfully consider being a part of this exciting ministry!
Conflict in the Holy Land: Plan to join
us Wednesday nights in Lent (3/8 through 4/5)
as we sing evening prayer, pray for peace,
and seek better understanding of the conflict
in the Holy Land. We'll look at what we can
learn about the situation from the Bible, Pastor Matt will share some photos from his trip
last year, and we'll ask how our Christian faith
informs our perspective on the conflict. Meal
served at 5:45, devotions begin at 6:30.

When opossums are playing ‘possum’, they are not “playing.” They actually pass out from sheer terror.

The United States has never lost a war in which mules were used.
Telephone Trivia:
Jane Barbie was the woman who did the voice recordings for the Bell System.
The first telephone exchange opened on January 28, 1878, in New Haven, Connecticut.
Month after month, the little Bell Company lived from hand to mouth. No salaries were paid in full. Often, for
weeks, they were not paid at all. In Watson’s notebook there are such entries during this period as “Lent Bell
fifty cents,” “Lent Hubbard twenty cents,” “Bought one bottle beer–too bad can’t have beer every day.”
When Bell’s patent was sixteen months old, there were 778 telephones in use.
The first “Hello” badge used to identify guests and hosts at conventions, parties, etc. was traced back to September 1880. It was on that date that the first Telephone Operators Convention was held at Niagra Falls and
the “Hello” badge was created for that event.
Western Electric invented the loudspeaker which was initially called “loud-speaking telephone.”
Western Electric successfully brought sound to motion pictures and introduced systems of mobile communications which culminated in the cellular telephone.
During the depths of the Depression, telephones in use fell from 16 to 13 per 100 population and by the late
1970’s the number had surpassed 75 per 100 population.
Western Electric mass-produced color telephones for the first time in 1954.
In Japan, Western Electric first sold equipment in 1890, then in 1899 helped form the Nippon Electric Company (NEC). This was Japan’s first joint venture with an American firm.
The use of telephone answering machines became popular in 1974.
In the first month of the Bell Telephone Company’s existence in 1877, only six telephones were sold!
Phone service was established at the White House one year after its invention. President Rutherford B. Hayes was the first to
have phone service (1877-81).
Two days before Alexander Graham Bell married Mabel Hubbard in 1877, he gave her 99 percent of his company shares as a
wedding gift. He kept a mere ten shares for himself.

February Senior News
Minnie Conrad
Holly Grove Senior Citizens met Wednesday, February 15th at Mt. Tabor’s Events Center.
Virginia is doing very well after her surgery and is recuperating at home.
Sarah Leonard read from 1st Corinthians and Carolyn Grubb had 2 poems. Carolyn Grubb introduced Linda Hunt who told us about her journey with her husband, Rev. Dr. Brooks Hunt‘s illness. She had handouts with information for relatives and caregivers of someone with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. She
told how she helped him to feel in control and to keep his dignity during this scary time. Her e-mail is
[email protected]. This was a very heart-warming and informative presentation. Thank you to Sarah and both Carolyn Grubbs for arranging this program.
Pastor Matt blessed our food and we enjoyed one of Daisy’s delicious meals.
Our next meeting will be on March 15th at 10:30 and all seniors in the community are invited to join us.
