Ron Wolf lauds Jets' choices for coach, GM (Bob Glauber)

Newly selected Hall of Fame general manager Ron Wolf, who built the Packers into Super Bowl champions
after more than two decades of post-Lombardi era futility, said the Jets came away with the best available
head coach on the market this year.
And it's not because Wolf was a paid adviser to the Jets during the search process. The straight-talking
Wolf said Todd Bowles blew away the field of candidates during his two interviews with the Jets.
In fact, Wolf recommended to Jets owner Woody Johnson that he hire Bowles on the spot after his first
of two interviews.
"I told Woody when Bowles interviewed that I wouldn't let the guy out of the building. Hire him right
now," Wolf told Newsday in his first public remarks about the interview process. Wolf and former Texans
and Washington GM Charley Casserly served as advisers to Johnson. "Todd Bowles was an exceptional
interview. It's one of those things where you go through the process and somebody just hits you, and
Bowles did that. Well-prepared, a pro's pro, no-nonsense kind of guy and, in my opinion, the best guy we
interviewed."

The Jets also interviewed Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, who is expected to take the Falcons'
coaching job shortly after Sunday's Super Bowl XLIX against the Patriots. An announcement on Quinn's
hiring is expected on Monday.
"I think it worked out tremendously for the New York Jets, and I say that because of who we ended up
with," said Wolf, who was selected for the Hall of Fame in the contributors' category.
The Jets also hired general manager Mike Maccagnan, the former Texans director of personnel. Wolf
conducted the interview with Maccagnan after Casserly recused himself because of his familiarity with
Maccagnan, whom he has known for more than 20 years.
"Maccagnan was very good and Woody put him through an excruciating interview, and he came through
with flying colors," Wolf said. "Mike will be very methodical. I don't think you'll ever upset him. He's going
to do it his way. In the interview, he was very good. But Bowles, holy smokes. He was incredible."
Wolf also came away impressed with Johnson.
"Winning's very important to him," Wolf said. "He wants to win, and I think he'll do most anything he can
in order to do that, within reason. You just hope that can make it work for him."

Todd Bowles named assistant coach of year by AP (Kimberley Martin)

It's not the Lombardi Trophy, but it's a start.
New Jets head coach Todd Bowles won the inaugural Associated Press Assistant Coach of the Year award
on Saturday for his work last season as the Arizona Cardinals' defensive coordinator.
Bowles, who recently won the Pro Football Writers of America's assistant of the year award, received 22
votes. Second-place finisher, Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli, received 12 votes.
Bowles spent the past two seasons in Arizona coaching under Bruce Arians, who also was named the AP's
Coach of the Year at the fourth annual NFL Honors awards show.
Shortly after Arians walked on stage to receive his award, he gave Bowles a shoutout and said: "I wouldn't
be here without him."

Jets owner Woody Johnson has issued a statement about the death of Ann Mara.
Mara, the wife of late Giants owner Wellington Mara, died this weekend at age 85.

The Giants announced her death Sunday. John Mara, her son, is currently the Giants' president and chief
executive officer.
Here is Johnson's statement:
"My deepest condolences to John Mara and the Mara family on the passing of Mrs. Ann Mara. Her
remarkable legacy will continue to live on through her family, the Giants franchise she loved so dearly and
the many lives she touched. She will be missed by the NFL family."
Wellington Mara died in October of 2005. He and Johnson overlapped in their ownership of New York's
professional football teams for almost six years. Johnson bought the Jets in January of 2000.

Jets' Woody Johnson reportedly resents Roger Goodell for playing favorites among NFL owners (Dom
Cosentino)

If you haven't yet, you should read Gabriel Sherman's report for GQ on NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
It's a fascinating inside look at how Goodell has been focused on making more money for the owners at
the expense of everything else—from off-field scandals to the growing anger he's fostering among players
to the league's indifference to links between football and head trauma, to cite three notable examples.
The consequences of all this, GQ says, "add up to nothing less than an existential threat to the sport itself."
But buried in Sherman's piece is a brief paragraph about the resentment Goodell has fostered among
certain owners. Why? Because Goodell tends to play favorites, with Patriots owner Robert Kraft
specifically cited as being especially close to him.
And Jets owner Woody Johnson is one of those who doesn't appreciate it. From GQ (emphasis mine):
Bob McNair, who owns the Houston Texans and is a Goodell supporter, told me that when Saints owner
Tom Benson resigned from three league committees in 2013, Goodell's pay package and his handling of
the Saints' Bountygate scandal were two reasons. "Tom's a green-eyeshade accountant of many years,"
McNair said. "He's just not happy about what happened." (Through a spokesman, Benson denies this.) It's
also an open secret in league circles that some owners, especially Woody Johnson of the Jets, resent the
preferential treatment Goodell is perceived to extend to his inner circle. (As the football world waits for
the commissioner's decision on whether to punish the Patriots for Deflategate, many are wondering how
his relationship with Kraft will affect Goodell's ruling.)
On Saturday in Phoenix, just before he was to receive the inaugural Steinberg DeNicola Humanitarian
Award, Johnson was asked about that passage from Sherman's GQ story. His answer was pretty much
what one would expect an owner who's made an exponential return on his investment thanks in part to
Goodell's stewardship to say on the record.
"I didn't interview for that," Johnson said. "I just think that we've done a lot of good things this year, and
we've had some situations arise that we're going to have to work our way through. That's part of our
obligation, that when you're as successful as we are in the NFL, we're going to have more attention paid
to us, and we're willing to do that. So I think it's going to take time. There will be sunny days to come up."
See? The NFL is only experiencing problems because it's so successful! Of course! With that, let's let
Sherman have the last word:
3|Page
Daily Clips Cont.
Taken together, the nonstop drumbeat of bad news added up to a growing sense that Goodell and his
owner bosses are tone-deaf to the issues that plague the NFL--and on the wrong side of history to a rising
generation that increasingly sees football as too violent, too regressive, and too money-driven to enjoy
without feeling more than a little bit turned off by the whole decadent spectacle.

Jets, Rex Ryan's Buffalo Bills both expected to pursue Darrelle Revis in free agency, per report (Dom
Cosentino)
NJ Advance Media

Here's something that ought to work Jets fans into a lather on Super Bowl Sunday:
This ought to come as no surprise, considering the Jets have a glaring need at cornerback and owner
Woody Johnson has been charged with tampering for saying he'd like to have Revis back.
But wait! There's more!
Revis, of course, starred for the Jets from 2007-12, with Ryan as his head coach the last four of those
seasons. He was traded to the Bucs in 2013 and picked up by the Patriots after being released last spring.
The Patriots, you might have heard, are scheduled to play the Seahawks later Sunday in Super Bowl XLIX.
If Revis does hit free agency—and that's still a rather giant "if," considering the Patriots have an expensive
team option on him for 2015—nothing will ratchet up the demand for him quite like a bidding war pitting
the Jets against Ryan.
It therefore makes sense for Revis's camp to float these reports to ramp up the pressure on the Patriots.
(Though the Jets and Bills could also be the sources of this info as a way to grab headlines on Super Bowl
Sunday.) Revis's team option in 2015 calls for him to earn $20 million in base salary with a $25 million cap
charge. Those figures seem to be prohibitive—what team pays that kind of money for a cornerback, even
a cornerback as talented as Revis?—but the Pats have also put it out there that they're open to the
possibility of exercising Revis's option anyway.
The Patriots have until the final day of the 2014 league year to trigger Revis's option. Free agency begins
March 10. Giddy up.

What message has former Jets quarterback Chad Pennington given Geno Smith about his future? (Darryl
Slater)
NJ Advance Media
February 1, 2015

Quarterback Chad Pennington, drafted 18th overall by the Jets in 2000, knows a thing or two about
thriving after being cut loose.
After the 2007 season, the Jets opted for Brett Favre as their quarterback, though only for the 2008
season.
4|Page
Daily Clips Cont.
Pennington, meanwhile, spent the final three seasons of his career with the Dolphins. He had a strong
season in 2008: 3,653 passing yards, 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions, as the Dolphins went 11-5
and won the AFC East.
Speaking from experience, Pennington has delivered this message to Geno Smith: You might not play your
whole career with the Jets, so you need to impress other teams right now, too.
Smith is entering his third season in 2015, after mostly struggling in his first two. At the NFL Honors awards
show Saturday in Phoenix, Pennington was asked about his message to Smith.
"It's really: Focus in on how you can become a better professional, and realize that even though you're
playing for the Jets, those other 31 teams, their eyes are on you as well," Pennington told NJ Advance
Media's Jordan Raanan. "So you may not end up being a Jet long-term. So it's about how you handle
yourself as a professional and how much better you become. If the Jets want you, then they'll ask you to
be back. If not, there will be somebody else looking for a good quarterback. It's a premium."
Smith said Saturday in New York that he doesn't believe 2015 is his last chance with the Jets, but he thinks
this offseason will be vital. The Jets might end up drafting a quarterback. Plus, Smith has to learn a new
offense, though if Chan Gailey uses a spread system, that could bode well for Smith.
"Geno needs to stay the course -- not get too high, not get too low, understand there's a maturation
process you have to go through as a quarterback, and be patient," Pennington said. "There's no doubt he
has finished these last two seasons well, and he's gotten better. Now, there's a (coaching) change. That's
a whole different dynamic, different challenge. So that's going to bring something different to the table."
Pennington understands that it's hard for a young quarterback to thrive in New York when he has to play
immediately. Pennington didn't start until his third year.
"The hardest thing for Geno is that he's had to make his mistakes in front of a national media and television
audience," Pennington said. "I had two and a half years to make my mistakes behind closed doors before
I was ready to play. So that brings a whole different dynamic into your maturation process as a
professional. He's handled it well. Are there things he might be able to do different? Absolutely. But as
long as he continues to progress, then good things are there for him."

Owner Woody Johnson says new contract for Muhammad Wilkerson among Jets' priorities (Dom

The Jets enter the 2015 offseason with a new general manager and a boatload of salary-cap space. They
obviously have roster holes—cornerback, safety, offensive line, linebacker, edge rusher, to name five—
that can be filled through free agency and the draft.
But there's also the importance of keeping one of their own top players: Defensive end Muhammad
Wilkerson, who can become a free agent in 2016 unless a new deal is done.
Under general manager John Idzik, who was fired at the end of the 2014 season, there were no reports of
any progress on a new contract for Wilkerson, who is scheduled to earn $6.97 million in 2015 because the
Jets exercised the fifth-year option on the rookie deal Wilkerson signed upon being drafted in the 2011
first round. But Mike Maccagnan has since taken over as GM, and owner Woody Johnson said that when
5|Page

Maccagnan and new head coach Todd Bowles get to work on Tuesday, getting Wilkerson signed for the
long-term could be among the team's first priorities.
"I think that's something that we'll be looking at, starting Tuesday, when we get our first staff in there,"
Johnson told reporters in Phoenix on Saturday. "We're going to take a look at Mo; Mo's obviously a great
player. In terms of getting all that going, I'm sure that will be one of their priorities."
Johnson spoke to reporters on the red carpet outside agent Leigh Steinberg's Super Bowl Party. Johnson
was there to receive the first annual Steinberg DeNicola Humanitarian Award for his work in founding the
Alliance for Lupus Research and for a donation he and the Jets made to a foundation that provides housing
for wounded war veterans.

NEW YORK POST
Darrelle Revis digs at Jets while basking in title with Belichick (Bart Hubbuch)
New York Post
February 2, 2015
http://nypost.com/2015/02/02/darrelle-revis-digs-at-jets-while-basking-in-title-with-belichick/
GLENDALE, Ariz. — Darrelle Revis’ big bet on himself paid off in spectacular fashion Sunday night.
The former Jets All-Pro cornerback can now add “world champion” to his sparkling individual résumé after
the Patriots came back and held on for a 28-24 victory over the Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX.
Revis was almost speechless as he sat in the University of Phoenix Stadium postgame interview room
when he wasn’t giddily borrowing a pink cowboy hat from a TV reporter.
“It feels great, but it’s surreal,” Revis said. “I’m here, man. It’s been an awesome ride.”
Revis resisted the urge to gloat, even though Seahawks counterpart Richard Sherman had taunted him in
the second half on national TV by pointing out Revis had been beaten by Doug Baldwin for a touchdown
that gave Seattle a 24-14 lead.
Revis and the Patriots had the last laugh, though, as rookie safety Malcolm Butler’s interception at the
goal line with 20 seconds left clinched the first Super Bowl ring of Revis’ eight-year career.
It was especially gratifying for Revis, considering the Patriots are his third team in the past three years
after the Jets — tired of his constant contract demands — traded him in 2013 following an injuryshortened season to the Buccaneers, who then cut him after one year.
Revis gambled on what amounted to a one-year, $12 million deal with the Patriots, and the result was
another All-Pro performance from him and a Lombardi Trophy.
The Patriots now must decide whether to keep him at a steep $20 million in 2015 or let him hit the freeagent market, where a national TV report Sunday said the Jets’ new management team plans to be waiting
with an offer.
Revis sounded Sunday night as if he wants to stick around New England for a while longer — and he took
a shot at the Jets in the process.
6|Page
Daily Clips Cont.
“Since I sat down with [Patriots owner] Robert Kraft and Bill Belichick [last spring], this was the reason —
to be part of this legacy that we did tonight and win the Super Bowl, to be part of something great,” Revis
said.
“I’m happy they had arms open for me, especially coming from New York. It’s been an amazing journey.”
Revis had just come from the embrace of Belichick, who held the Lombardi Trophy with his star acquisition
in the locker room.
“This is why you’re here!” Belichick said to Revis.

Jets gearing up for run at Darrelle Revis reunion (Brian Costello)
New York Post
February 1, 2015
http://nypost.com/2015/02/01/jets-gearing-up-for-run-at-darrelle-revis-reunion/
GLENDALE, Ariz. – Could Darrelle Revis go from the Super Bowl to a Jets reunion?
The Jets are primed to make a run at the All-Pro cornerback if he becomes a free agent next month,
according to an ESPN report. Revis spent six seasons with the Jets after the team took him in the first
round of the 2007 NFL Draft. They traded him to the Buccaneers two years ago and he signed with the
Patriots last year.
The Bills are another team interested in signing Revis, according to the report. That is no surprise with
former Jets coach Rex Ryan now coaching there. Ryan made no secret of his affinity for Ryan during the
four years they spent together in New York.
The idea of a Revis reunion with the Jets is intriguing because the team passed on him last year after the
Buccaneers released him. Ryan desperately wanted to bring him in, but then general manager John Idzik
did not. Many believed owner Woody Johnson also was opposed to bringing back Revis, but all indications
are it never got to Johnson last year to shoot down.
At the press conference to announce the firings of Ryan and Idzik in December, Johnson was asked about
Revis and made it clear he would be open to Revis returning. He made it so clear the NFL is now
investigating the Jets on tampering charges.
“Darrelle is a great player,” Johnson said at the time. “If I thought I could have gotten Darrelle for that
[contract], I probably would have taken him. It was our best judgment to do what we did. Darrelle’s a
great player. I’d love Darrelle to come back.”
The marriage between the Patriots and Revis has been a good one, so it would be a surprise if they do not
try to keep him. Revis had two interceptions this season and gave their defense an element that has been
missing by taking away an opposing receiver. Revis is under contract for next season, but the Patriots are
expected to release him rather than paying the $20 million he is due.
If Revis does become a free agent, he will have a long line of suitors. The question will be what teams
interest him. After going to the Super Bowl with the Patriots, he may not want to leave a winning situation.
The Jets and the Bills show no promise of winning big in 2015 with their respective question marks at
quarterback. Revis turns 30 in July and may be looking for a long-term deal after living year-to-year
recently.
The Jets know how difficult it can be to negotiate with Revis’ camp after two holdouts during his time with
the team. The fear of another holdout and not being able to sign him to a long-term deal led to the 2013
7|Page
Daily Clips Cont.
trade to Tampa Bay. In December, Johnson said he did not think the Jets would have gotten the same deal
the Patriots did with Revis.
“I guess my experience with his agents,” Johnson said. “It would have been very hard.”
He may find out again in March how hard it is.

ESPN NEW YORK
Why the Jets are intrigued by a Darrelle Revis reunion (Rich Cimini)
ESPN New York
February 1, 2015
http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/49038/why-the-jets-are-intrigued-by-a-darrelle-revisreunion?ex_cid=espnapi_public
Even though Woody Johnson told the world recently that he'd welcome Darrelle Revis back to the New
York Jets in 2015, it still came as a mild surprise Sunday when it was revealed they're expected to pursue
the star cornerback if he comes a free agent, as ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported.
On Dec. 29, Johnson's comments -- which could get him in hot water with the NFL's tampering police -were passed off as Woody-speak, an off-the-cuff remark. After all, wasn't this the same owner who, two
years ago, was the driving force behind the trade that sent Revis to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers?
Yes, but a lot has changed in two years, and I believe the Jets are serious about bringing Revis Island back
to the New York/New Jersey harbor. The climate has changed after two non-winning seasons. The general
manager has changed. And Johnson apparently has changed, too.
I believe Johnson has recognized that, after two years of being cautious in the offseason, he needs to turn
up the aggressiveness to excite his frustrated fan base. Changing regimes does that to a certain degree,
but no one will pay to see Todd Bowles and Mike Maccagnan on Sundays. They need an on-the-field draw
and, let's be honest, a franchise quarterback isn't walking through the door anytime soon. Even if they
were to draft Marcus Mariota or Jameis Winston, it's unlikely he'd play immediately.
That's why I think Johnson is intrigued by the idea of reuniting with Revis, weakening a division rival in the
process. Johnson, second-guessing former GM John Idzik, has said he would've pursued Revis last
offseason (after he was cut by the Bucs) if he knew he could've signed him for $12 million in 2014, the
deal he landed with the New England Patriots.
Technically, Revis is under contract to the Patriots in 2015, but his $25 million cap charge is prohibitive.
They have three ptions: Pay him $20 million in 2015. Renegotiate. Release him. If it's the latter, they can
always re-sign him. The Patriots want him back, but wanting and getting are two different things when it
comes to Revis, who chases the money.
Would Revis consider the Jets? Yes, he would. They'd be a more attractive destination if Rex Ryan still
were the coach, but I don't think that would be a deal breaker. Revis likes New York (he almost bought a
place in Manhattan before the trade), and the idea of returning to where he started might appeal to him
in terms of creating a legacy in one place instead of being remembered as a football vagabond.
But would he leave a perennial contender for a 4-12 team? That would be a tough one, but, again, money
talks with Revis.
You'd like to believe Johnson isn't calling the shots here, that he's letting Maccagnan make the football
decisions, but he's not thinking out of school by coveting Revis. After all, most of the English-speaking
8|Page
Daily Clips Cont.
world knows the Jets need cornerbacks. They especially need corners to play in Bowles' blitz-heavy
scheme.
So let's examine the facts: They need a cornerback. One the best corners could be available. They have a
ton of cap space. Seems pretty simple, huh?
Well, it's never simple with Revis, so don't go to the attic for your old No. 24 jersey just yet. Remember,
he has a history of acrimonious negotiations with the Jets. But, for now, just know that Revis Island is
showing up on the Jets' radar.

Jets, Bills to pursue Darrelle Revis (Adam Schefter)

Darrelle Revis will have no shortage of AFC East suitors if he becomes a free agent this offseason.
The Jets are expected to pursue Revis to see if they can bring him back to New York, sources told ESPN.
The Jets have already been preparing how to best make their run at Revis.
As if that weren't intriguing enough, former Jets head coach Rex Ryan -- still disappointed his former team
didn't bring Revis back last year when it had the chance -- also wants to try to bring the Pro Bowl
cornerback to the Bills, sources told ESPN.
The Patriots also would like to keep Revis, though they are unlikely to exercise the $20 million option in
his contract for next season, which then would make him a free agent.
Revis, who turns 30 in July, had two interceptions this season, his first with the Patriots. He thrived under
Ryan with the Jets, reaching the Pro Bowl in four straight seasons from 2008 to 2011.
Tampering charges against the Jets were filed over comments that team owner Woody Johnson made in
December about Revis, and the NFL has been looking into the matter, an NFL official told ESPN.
At a news conference to discuss the firing of Ryan and general manager John Idzik, Johnson openly praised
Revis and added, "I'd love for Darrelle to come back."
Later that day, Johnson issued a mea culpa, saying he "misspoke" when he made his comments. He also
said he called Patriots owner Robert Kraft to "emphasize those points."
