Shelf File Cabinet Catalog Filing Cabinets Filing Cabinets General Information Quality By Design In 1973, JETER SYSTEMS designed its line of shelf filing cabinets to be the best available anywhere. Today, they are even better, due to our continual improvements. Complete Line Tailored To Customers’ Needs • New! SuperStax™ File – Eliminates All Shelf Edges For Quicker Processing JETER SYSTEMS developed a breakthrough with the new SuperStax file, a redesign of the Stax file. This new product has eliminated all lips at the front edges allowing greater access to the front shelf opening entry point. As a result, personnel can process documents more quickly. Faster, Easier Filing With JETER SYSTEMS’ Unique Features JETER SYSTEMS’ cabinets are always provided with the proper number of file dividers to keep records upright and in fast-finding order. Our dividers are welded into the units so they’re always in place, and their weight-bearing design prevents the file shelves from ever sagging. Our files are designed with the correct amount of vertical space between the shelf rows. Many others are not, which can cause difficulty and folder damage during filing operations. In addition, the low overall height of our cabinets makes the top shelf lower and more accessible than other designs. When moving JETER cabinets, folders can be secured in their tiers to save the time and cost of unloading, reloading and the potential loss of records. The extra-strong construction of our files withstands the rigors of moving, whether in relocation or in use on mobile systems. The Slant file’s angular design promotes enhanced visibility. • Stax® File – Stackable For A Variety Of Heights And Additions All JETER shelf files are stackable to provide for a variety of cabinet heights as well as ease in adding more shelf openings later. Because the stackable shelf is its own structure, it wastes no space for uprights, supports or thick shelves. • Slant ™ File – Slanted To Promote Fast, Accurate Filing The complete JETER line features the Slant file, which we invented and originally patented for use with color-coded folders. Its slanted shape causes the end tab of each folder to be visible at a glance to promote fast, accurate filing. • Trax™ Rolling Bases – For JETER Cabinets JETER SYSTEMS also offers Trax, the system of rolling bases for Slant, Stax and SuperStax. Trax adds a row of cabinets in front of a row for greater file capacity. Filing Cabinets 4 Trax rolling bases offer huge file capacity gains. 5 Filing Cabinets Filing Cabinets Work Shelf SHELF JETER makes a larger W Slant variety of stackable shelf • E-Z Roller Mobile Systems – For JETER Cabinets ™ files. The spacer may be used as a convenient cubbyhole for “to be filed” material or supply items such as “out guides.” Top & Base Set The base for Slant and Stax cabinets is 2" high. The top panel is flush with the top tier, adding almost no height. One Top & Base set is required to complete a cabinet. A 4" Top & Base set is available for letter-size units only. The two-piece Top & Base set may be special ordered as separate pieces. Tops are 35 percent of set price and bases are 75 percent of set price. To maximize the file capacity of virtually any available space, most JETER shelf units are available in 2', 3', 3 1⁄2' and 4' shelf widths. All offer extremely fast assembly to deliver cost efficiency from the start. Computerized Planning And Drawing Services Let our factory experts analyze your floor space requirements. Workshelf • Dividers to support the folders are very important to worker productivity and convenience. Our cabinets have a different number of dividers based on the width of the shelf and the size of the folders. We create ideal-sized cavities 6-7" wide which perfectly support letter/ legal folders. Smaller sizes – like minis – get more dividers to support the smaller folders. Use the chart on page 7 to determine the number of dividers in each standard shelf. We can eliminate or add dividers for special requirements. Special-sized shelves are available in 100shelf lots, with certain limitations. D Workshelf All About Our Dividers: Stax & SuperStax H 42" B 42" 6 7 SuperStax Files SuperStax Files SuperStax is the newest development in filing cabinets at JETER. After 20 years, we have redesigned the Stax system for letter-size filing into what we call our new “SuperStax.” Shelf Edges Have Been Reduced To Create Larger Vertical Openings For Greater Access To Your Folders to the thickness of hemmed metal, which means that the vertical openings of all JETER SuperStax files are greater. There are no edges at the front to catch file folders going in and out of the file. This unique design allows far greater access when filing or retrieving folders. SuperStax provides a clearance of 10 1⁄4" for standard 9 1⁄2" high end tab folders. Many systems only provide 9 3⁄4" which is too close for fast filing. The first change we made was to remove all of the shelf lip edges. The front shelf lips on the Stax file are 3⁄8". Now they have been reduced SuperStax ™ 8 JETER’s new SuperStax cabinet next to JETER Stax file. Both files have identical dimensions allowing the new design to be used in conjunction with Stax files. 9 SuperStax Files SuperStax Files (Patent Pending) Special Tooling Guarantees Exact Dimensions This new, patent-pending design is manufactured with special tooling to ensure correct dimensions. A machine folds the cabinet, producing the correct height each time. Many competitive units do not utilize this type of equipment. It ensures our units will be exactly square with the same heights time after time. New, Redesigned C-Shaped Dividers Become Like Support Posts In A Building Dividers are welded into all JETER filing cabinets. We have also redesigned the divider. Our new C-shaped divider is also manufactured on a special machine. This machine ensures overall tolerances on these divider heights that exactly match the cabinet that they are welded into. When the shelves stack up on one another, the dividers from one unit touch the shelf above. The file shelf dividers actually become like support posts in a building – the heavier the weight applied, the more secure and stable the units become. In the past 20 years, we have sold thousands and thousands of these shelves throughout the world. This filing cabinet was always designed to be just that – a filing cabinet. It should not be confused with less expensive, open-sided four-post-type equipment. Every JETER Stax cabinet is closed at the back and at both sides. Its dimensions are designed to be exactly correct for all different sized file folders. The Most Space-Efficient Cabinets In The Industry Stax cabinets are the most space efficient and offer the most file capacity. No space is wasted for posts or uprights because each shelf is its own strong, supporting structure. Steel-To-Steel Interconnect System For Solid Attachment All JETER cabinets are modular, meaning that each shelf goes together shelf by shelf with the use of seven convenient, easy-to-use rivet fasteners. The cabinets have a steel interconnect mechanism to ensure that they stay firmly interconnected and attached. Since these products are modular, they are flexible in height and can be added to at any time. JETER cabinets are available in a variety of widths and sizes. 14 15 Stax Files Stax Files Lower Top Row Superior Quality Paint Finish Because Stax files have only a 3⁄8" shelf lip, the efficiencies of these units vertically is far greater than thick, shelf equipment. JETER cabinets have a lower top row. Our thin shelf is supported by our unique, integral-welded file support dividers. All surfaces are painted with superior quality, durable baked enamel. Colors are electronically matched so new and old units can intermix without color variation from year to year. Cabinet Depths Allow For Better Visibility Of Folders Strategically Placed Dividers For Faster Filing Actions – As Well As Superior Strength Each size of JETER filing equipment has been designed for the specific media it is to contain. As a result, all of our cabinets allow the file folder tabs to stick out slightly from the filing cabinet for better visibility. Never can the folders be recessed into the cabinet and away from the available light in the file room. The support dividers are placed strategically across the width of each shelf. Differing numbers of dividers are added to wider shelf units, with the idea to create small openings of approximately 6-7" in width so that the file folders remain in an upright manner and that their color coding remains in perfect alignment. This enables the file folder to be removed and refiled with ease. These dividers support and make the cabinets very rigid, individual units, without the need for spacewasting support posts, as is required with cantilevered and/or four-post shelving. No Equipment On The Market Can Equal The Filing Capacity Per Square Foot The full width of JETER cabinets is available for folders. Most 36" units sold by competitors have less than 36" available for folders. JETER cabinets accept folders equal to the full width of the unit. For example, JETER 48" units have 48" of filing capacity. Color Selection Neutral colors offer a noncompetitive background for our precise color-coded filing systems. Neutral Lite and Light Gray are the two standard colors. Special colors are available to match any office decor. Heavy-Duty Modular Equipment vs. Light-Duty Modular Equipment JETER Stax files allow you to store all types of media in one storage unit. Cabinets Designed For The Size Of Folders They Contain Variety Of Sizes To Meet Customers’ Needs On letter-size units, we have provided a proper folder clearance at 101⁄8". This is a comfortable dimension for end tab folders, which are generally 91⁄2" high. Our legal-size units are spaced more generously because legal records tend to be held in accordion-style pockets that require more vertical space. Our cabinets are designed specifically for the size media they contain, meaning that the proper dimensions are available to allow folders to enter and exit the file conveniently, comfortably and swiftly. JETER makes Stax cabinets in a variety of sizes. Most of our cabinets come in standard width sections of 24", 36", 42" and 48" to maximize the available floor space. See chart on page 7 for available sizes. From the beginning, these heavily reinforced cabinets were designed to be strong, allowing them to be placed safely on our Trax and E-Z Roller Systems. Stax cabinets are available in letter, legal, X-ray and mini for the most efficient storage of a wide variety of media. Mixed Media Storage Within One Cabinet Variety Of Bases JETER shelves are considerably heavier than most stackable shelves. We use heavier steel and more reinforcement to ensure that our cabinets are strong. Lighter-weight systems do not stand up well when used on mobile systems. They simply cannot take the shock through their unreinforced corners when the units come to a halt against the bumpers. Because these units are much weaker, their structure is lessened to the point that they are also more difficult to move with records intact. Bases come in 2" and 4". Media can be mixed with folders, binders and computer printouts. For small offices, one cabinet can be purchased and reconfigured as needs change. 16 17 Stax Files Stax Files Triangular, Welded Corner Reinforcements For Strength And Stability For maximum strength and stability, JETER welds triangular corner gussets to reinforce the corners of each shelf cabinet. This provides strength, especially against the stress created when used in a mobile system. STAX & SUPERSTAX SIZES All Stax equipment have small front shelf edges that never conceal file folders or cause them to snag upon removal from the file. Cabinets Can Be Moved Fully Loaded One of the most important advantages of JETER Stax equipment comes on moving day. JETER filing cabinets can be moved with their contents intact. Almost all other filing equipment requires the files to be removed and boxed, and the equipment knocked down for transportation and reassembly at the new location. Unlike some companies, our legal-size units are 3⁄8" greater per shelf in the clear file folder opening. This allows for the greater overall height often found with legal records. Many legal records use expansion pockets, which force internal folders to be taller than their normal profile. The extra spacing offered with JETER legal-size cabinets allows for the additional space required for this specific media. Legal depth shelves for letter-size ring binders are now available. Many legal applications require storage space for ring binders, and our ringbinder-size tiers allow for the correct height. They can be intermixed and located anywhere in a stack of legal-size shelves. STAX FILE COMPONENTS — LEGAL SIZE H W D SHIP. WT. (LBS.) EQUIP. WT. The mini-size cabinet was developed by JETER in order to meet the growing needs of those that had smaller than letter-size documents. Our mini cabinets are often used by dermatologists and overwhelmingly accepted in the optical field. They are less than 9" in depth, with a height of less than 7", which means that they can be stacked vertically and save a tremendous amount of space in comparison to letter-size systems. The mini product is available in three widths to maximize the capacity of available office space. Mini-size folders are designed to be used with this system. The shelves are parallelogram-shaped, with the slant of the cabinet causing each folder to extend past the one next to it. Because you see each folder better–you file faster! 55-Degree-Parallelogram Design Displays ColorCoding At Its Utmost Having the narrowest depth in the industry, Slant files are thinner from front to back. Letter size is only 10", legal size is 121/2" and X-ray size is 15" deep. Work shelves provide a rollout work surface at the cabinet and allow both hands to be free for filing. Spacers offer storage for “to be filed” material and “out folders.” Variety Of Space-Saving Features Slant files allow more rows in a small space than other types of files. Twenty-four inch, 36" and 48" tiers maximize the available floor space. Two-inch and 4" bases enable the bottom tier to be easily accessed. Four-inch bases are available for letter Slant only. Full-height welded dividers prevent shelf deflection and are placed in the proper distances to keep folders upright, yet not waste space. Letter-size Slant units are equipped with our NEW C-shaped divider which provides a platform on the top of the divider to receive the shelf above. This adds strength by providing a nesting surface for the shelf above, and is an integral part of the strength of the unit. Each divider supports the weight vertically throughout the cabinet. Strength And Stability With Fast Assembly Heavy 18-gauge steel is used for a much stronger cabinet than other stackables. Seven drive rivets plus our steel-to-steel interconnect system secure the shelves vertically. Triangular, welded corner reinforcements provide strength and stability especially against stress created when used on mobile systems. Slant files are modular so they can be stacked for easy expansion and moving, even when fully loaded. Quick assembly makes for fast setups and moves. For a quality appearance, superior baked enamel paint finish is applied to all surfaces. Neutral Lite and Light Gray offer a noncompetitive background for color coding. Some Important Considerations Slant files have unusual dimensions. The first section in any row is longer than the other sections in the row because each additional cabinet nests into the cabinet next to it. TOP VIEW–Slant File Width (A) (B) STARTER ADDER Note: Dimension (A) is the overall width of the starter section in each row of cabinetry. Each additional unit is the overall size (B). This is because the point of each file nests into the file next to it (see table below). All Slant files are designed for left to right filing. The equipment and the supplies used generally equal 15 percent of the total operating cost. As a result, any equipment that can have an impact on the productivity of the workers will, in fact, reduce the overall operating cost of the department by increasing its efficiency. Our files are used by some of the largest filing departments in the country, and we consider the individual needs of each of our customers, large or small. General Purpose Four-Post Shelving Is Not Correct For Most Filing Sizes And For Fast Filing Our specifically designed filing cabinets offer huge advantages over the common, inexpensive, four-post open shelving offered by so many manufacturers. The original concept of four-post shelving is good. It is, however, just that – a shelving system. Four-post shelving systems have adjustability based on 11⁄2" centers, like all industrial-based shelving. Unfortunately, the 11⁄2" spacing of four-post and all other general purpose shelving is not correct for most folder sizes. The distance between the shelf and the folders is normally too tight to allow for fast filing. The following is a review of some of the most noteworthy differences between JETER cabinets and four-post shelving: 1. Unique Cabinet Design Front-to-back, double-deep file shelves generally have a divider only a few inches high separating the folders, front to back. Again, it is not impossible for records to be inadvertently transferred from one face of the unit to the other face over the top of this back stop. File Folders Get Lost With Open Sides And Backs To always be the “lowest price,” this equipment is almost always proposed with inadequate dividers and open sides and backs. Most people do not realize that. There are gaps and spaces where file folders can actually catch within the shelves, yet remain completely out of sight. These units are open side to side, which allows folders to pass from section to section. Folders can easily hide behind the thick vertical support posts. The filing equipment that you contemplate purchasing is likely to be used more than 10 years. Only 30 minutes per day of savings is equal to more than one year of savings over those 10 years. So time savings add up fast in dollars on the budget. Faster is better. Notice the open sides and low back stop which separate files in a double-faced unit. All JETER filing units are closed at the top, bottom, back and both sides. This closed design is particularly advantageous in that file folders cannot ever be lost behind any flanges or within the cabinet. 2. Fire Protection In the event of an inadvertent sprinkler system going off, or a small fire, records are contained in individual steel cavities that do not allow for the penetration of air, such as open units. This means that folders would be more difficult to burn and more protected from water damage. Wet file folders would cause the load to get heavier and are likely to be in excess of what the floor is designed to hold. Large accumulations of wet records could cause a building floor to collapse. Many file departments operate on a 24-hour-a-day basis, and have a substantial investment in the personnel that move the folders in and out of their files. These costs are real, even in smaller file operations. Our advantages can be looked at as cost-saving investments, rather than as expenses. We have spent unmeasurable amounts of time discussing and reviewing the operations of many filing departments across the country. We commonly handle file conversions and other filing tasks that are a part of our Company’s offering. Our designs incorporate the lessons that we have learned, as we have worked with the inconveniences of a lot of different shelf styles and designs from other companies. 3. Dividers Ordinary four-post shelving has open sides and backs, making it easy for folders to become lost or hidden. 30 not supported, they tend to fall over much like unsupported library books on a shelf. Records in a fallen over and/or an unsupported, slumped position are not visually correct for color coding. The color coding becomes out of alignment and is rendered useless for the purpose of identifying records. FOUR-POST SHELVES Most four-post shelving systems use removable 22-gauge steel dividers as their means of supporting folders. Please recognize the importance of supporting records, because if they are Most systems of this type are quoted with far too few dividers. Often times a 3' shelf is quoted with only three dividers. Recognize that two of those dividers will be required to develop the “ends” of the shelf. The end of the shelf prevents the files from going behind what we call the “front shelf post,” going up the front of the shelving at its four corners. This means that one divider is left to support the records. These lightweight dividers normally cannot support this kind of weight. As a result, they bend. Once the dividers have been bent and abused in this fashion, the adjustability becomes invalid because the small tabs are bent and do not remove or insert easily from the shelves. Most of these dividers are soon unworkable, and, as a result, they are largely never used. As a consequence, 34" expanses of material on 36" shelves are not being supported at all. It is not uncommon with this type of filing equipment to see these dividers stacked in piles in the corner because file personnel reject them as totally unworkable. 31 JETER Cabinets vs.Four-Post Shelving JETER Cabinets vs.Four-Post Shelving Actual photo of Ohio hospital using four-post shelving without proper dividers. 4. Shelf Spacing FOUR-POST SHELVES Four-post units are adjustable on 11⁄2" centers. This works fine in most warehousing applica- Dividers not being used at a large insurance company. Every JETER filing unit is designed to include a proper array of file support dividers. Since JETER filing cabinets were originally designed to hold folders, and not just as general purpose shelving, we have incorporated the proper amount to correctly support color-coded folders in a true, upright fashion. It is not left up to the file room employees to make the determination regarding the proper placement of the divider, but rather it is designed at the factory into small record sections of approximately 6". This means that even when only one file folder is in a certain section, it can never fall over into a horizontal position – it stands upright, displaying its color coding as intended. tions for the storing of miscellaneous product. It does not, however, work well for filing folders. The available space between the rows for a 91⁄2" file folder is reduced to only 97⁄8" (some even less – down to 9 5⁄8"). This means that the file folder is almost exactly the same height as the available space into which it is to be inserted. It becomes a very difficult task at the higher and lower openings of the file, and file folders used in this kind of equipment show tremendous damage to their top edges as a result of the inadequately sized opening. The transfer or shifting of records within four-post type equipment is very difficult because of this limited amount of vertical space. One folder is difficult enough, but imagine trying to align a double handful of folders, as is common in a shift of file location. We design each of our filing cabinets to satisfy the needs of a specific size of media. The new SuperStax does an even better job of this because all of its front lip edges are now flat, making the space between our shelves the largest. This extra-large opening means that file folders move in and out of the file much more easily. Groups of records can be transferred without the cumbersome inconvenience of having them not fit into the shelf opening. This open design is much faster and more convenient for file department personnel. 5. Capacity FOUR-POST SHELVES All four-post shelf units have a cumbersome 2" wide front post. The L-shape or T-shape conceals 1" of records on each end of every shelf. As a result, a shelf divider is placed 1" in from each end of their shelf. This allows for 34" of filing capacity within each 36" shelf. This is an immediate five percent loss in filing-inch capacity. Two-inch base next to four-post shelving. 6. Base Assemblies Four-post divider at end of shelf. JETER shelves have a full width front opening. A 36" shelf yields a full 36" of filed material. There are no shelf lips or edges to waste space or hide folders. Single folder supported by welded dividers. FOUR-POST SHELVES The bottom shelf on four-post equipment is too close to the floor. Because its openings are reduced by its design, it is extremely difficult to insert folders on the bottom shelf. When filing into this opening, the folders often times come in contact with the floor and/or the shelf above. It is a very awkward level. JETER files are available with a standard 2" base. A 4" base is also available to move the folders off the floor even more. Whichever base is chosen, the efficiency of the vertical height of this file cabinet is unrivaled. Our top row is low and yet the spacing offered for folders is the greatest available. We simply do not waste the space that is occupied by the thick shelf of a four-post unit. be assembled together back to back and side to side, and at any time reconfigured into a completely different situation. Shelves can be removed to turn seven-highs into five-highs; back-to-back units can become single faced; tops can be added for counter-height units; and all of the equipment can be reconfigured to whatever the requirement is at that time. Drive rivet assembly shows the top of the drive rivets which hold cabinet sections together. 7. Modular Design FOUR-POST SHELVES Four-post filing equipment comes in what is known as a knocked-down condition. Assembly is cumbersome, and freight damage and poor paint quality are typical. You cannot add to the top of a four-post unit, and you cannot turn double-face units into single-face units in the future. This illustrates the loss of 1" of file space at each end of the four-post shelf because of the design of its thick, upright post. JETER’s cabinets are modular. Each shelf stacks up and interconnects to the others within the same stack. They can This view shows the bottom of the rivets in their expanded fashion, holding the cabinets securely together at seven locations per shelf. Note the huge contrast between SuperStax and four-post shelves. The quarter is used to illustrate the space available. Notice the space-wasting post and shelf of four-post shelves vs. the clean, trim design of SuperStax. 32 33 JETER Cabinets vs.Four-Post Shelving 8. Moving Day FOUR-POST SHELVES Because four-post equipment is made of interconnecting parts, it must be entirely disassembled before it can be moved. File rooms move often, and it is a cumbersome task. When moving four-post shelves, all of the records must first be removed and put into cartons. The cartoning and labeling process not only causes confusion, but it is time consuming. When cartoned records arrive at the new location, they are most often out of order, with the last box arriving first. In major record moves, records are normally returned to the shelves by movers. These movers do not have a great sensitivity for filing. Often, records are left too tight or with extra-large gaps in the areas where they are not required. JETER Cabinets vs.Four-Post Shelving When moving JETER SYSTEMS’ modular filing equipment, the file folders stay in the shelves. In smaller letter-size units, the file cabinets are separated into the bottom four shelves and the top three shelves. The openings of the files are wrapped with filament tape to make sure that the folders do not fall out. The cabinet sections can then be moved directly to a moving van or the waiting elevators. Once these cabinet sections arrive at the new location, they are easily reconfigured because the file folders are contained within their shelves. Each standard seven-high would contain about 15 boxes of records. As a result, having two distinct cabinet sections arrive with the records intact means a lot less reorganization and confusion. Because the records are never removed from the shelves, the spacing of those records is left undisturbed, as is the file room personnel’s sense of file location. The “K” section starts in exactly the same shelf location as previously to the move. 9. Mobile Systems 10. Appearance FOUR-POST SHELVES The original four-post designs were invented prior to the advent of mobile filing. The strength of all filing units is tested when the shelves are mounted on top of rolling bases. The shock that occurs when the units arrive at the end of their travel is severe. Thousands of pounds of records can abruptly stop as they contact rubber bumpers at the end of rails. The shock is transmitted throughout the structure of all filing units. It is common to see lightweight four-post and cantilever equipment sway and wave as the carriages move across the rails. This instability of the shelving systems can cause stress to the structural support of the shelving. FOUR-POST SHELVES Four-post equipment has a more industrial appearance. Its open framework can be unattractive. JETER filing equipment is designed to be used both in a stationary fashion as well as in a mobile installation. JETER SYSTEMS’ cabinets are so strong that even under the most abrupt stops or starts you will never see them sway. JETER’s cabinets have always been designed as office furniture. Our paint quality and the entire appearance of our product is for front-office use. Our cabinet backs are smooth and attractive and can be used as office dividers. Our paint colors complement any decor, and special colors are available. You will never see paint runs or an unpainted surface on any of our filing cabinets. Our paint colors are always identical, order after order, year after year. High-quality ball bearing systems make JETER’s work shelves trouble-free, even in high-activity situations. 11. Work Shelves FOUR-POST SHELVES In some cases, four-post units can receive work shelves. These work shelves tend to be designed as light-duty units and do not normally hold up well to the excessive activities found in most filing departments. Work shelves used with four-post shelves are bolted to the bottom of one of the shelves. These bolts stick through the shelf and can provide an obstacle for a returning file folder. The addition of a work shelf reduces the height of the file shelf below by 1", actually rendering it useless in some cases. With their smooth backside, JETER cabinets can be used as office dividers. JETER’s work shelves use the highest quality ball bearing suspension systems available. These work shelves are designed to be trouble-free, even for those who have a high-activity, 24hour-a-day file department. The correct work shelf is an important addition to any shelf file. investment as they yield benefits each day in worker productivity, which results in more filing activities per day. JETER work shelves have a red Formica edge to alert when they have been left in an open position. Shelf files do not have any horizontal surfaces. As a result, without a work shelf, referencing material and/or adding or deleting documents requires the file folder to be removed from its location. Work shelves are an excellent Four-inch bases are available for all letter-size units, 2" bases are standard on JETER files. 34 35
