March 2017 waterchallenge.org.au CARLINDA’S STORY By participating in the Water Challenge not only are you improving your health, but you’re also helping transform the lives of women like Carlinda from Mozambique. The water she collects is dirty and often makes her children sick with diarrhoea. One of Carlinda’s five children has died due to diarrhoea caused by unsafe water. Collecting water is a task of the women in Carlinda’s community. In developing countries, walking long distances for water is a daily necessity, and deprives women of time to earn a living and children of time to get an education. During the dry season the tank in Carlinda’s village is often empty. As a result, Carlinda must travel long distances to collect water where she is at risk to poisonous snakes and wild animals. Carlinda’s village has established a Water Committee and is working with WaterAid to improve access to safe water in her community. 2 WHAT IS THE WATER CHALLENGE? The Water Challenge is WaterAid’s annual fundraising event, coinciding with World Water Day on 22 March. The concept is simple. Choose your Water Challenge this March, improve your health, and help provide lifesaving safe water in some of the world’s poorest communities. Registration is free. Visit www.waterchallenge.org.au to learn more and get involved. Choose your challenge: DRINK JUST WATER 1 in 10 people worldwide don’t have access to safe, clean water. Water is essential for life and good health. Drinking sugary drinks can have disastrous effects on your health. It can lead to weight gain, tooth decay and insulin resistance to name just a few of the known health issues. Swap bottled drinks for tap water and add the money you save to your fundraising tally. Challenge yourself to make ‘just water’ your only beverage for 14 or 30 days this March, to improve your health and raise money to help provide lifesaving safe water to others. Tip: Drinking water doesn’t have to be boring! Make it exciting by adding some fresh strawberries, lemon, cucumber and mint. Get creative! – OR – WALK FOR WATER How far would you walk for a glass of water? Each day, women and children walk an average of 30 minutes just to collect water in some of the world’s poorest communities. Walk 10,000 steps a day between 20 and 24 March, whilst raising money to help provide lifesaving safe water in some of the world’s poorest communities. This year you can record your kilometres travelled with the easy to use MapMyFitness App which can be synced to your personal fundraising page for your sponsors to see. Fact: Some women in the world’s poorest communities often carry water on their heads weighing 20kgs, the same amount as the average airport luggage allowance. Please consult your health care provider if you are unsure about your current level of fitness. WaterAid is also proud to partner with Netball Victoria and the Melbourne Vixens. As part of our annual Water Challenge, your netball team can participate in Goals for Water, throughout the month of April. Everyone, everywhere should have access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene. These basic services underpin health, education and livelihoods, and are central to eradicating extreme poverty. When you take WaterAid’s Water Challenge you can improve your health, and help provide lifesaving safe water for people living in some of the world’s poorest communities. WaterAid has reached more than 1.9 million people with safe water in the last year, and over 24 million people since 1981. But there is still more to do, as 650 million people still don’t have access to safe water. MAKE YOUR The funds and awareness raised through the Water Challenge will help WaterAid‘s work across the Asia Pacific region, including programs in our neighbouring countries Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, and Cambodia.
