The Daily Sparkle ® Sunday 1 May 2016 The Way We Were tinyurl.com/hmxftzg binged.it/1WyVGCm Today in History Dancing round the Maypole Black Forest Gateau On the First of May, people in countries all over the world celebrate May Day. It is often associated with springtime, fertility, flowers and crops. Some flavours go really well together. A combination I really liked, that was popular in the 1960s, was chocolate, cherries and cream. They were the basic ingredients for Black Forest Gateau that was on so many restaurant menus. In Great Britain, celebrations often involved singing and dancing. Morris Dancers often performed on May Day. Children had a chance to dance round a Maypole, weaving in and out with ribbons. Lots of villages chose a young girl to be May Queen. May Day is often a public holiday. In many countries it is called International Workers Day or Labour Day, celebrating working people. © 2016 Daily Sparkle All rights reserved I got my recipe from Woman’s Own. It was a very chocolatey sponge cake, moistened with the juice from a tin of black cherries. You spread a layer of whipped cream on one sponge cake, and half the drained cherries. The rest of them, and more cream went on top, then flakes of chocolate. Delicious! www.dailysparkle.co.uk 1 May 2016 Page 1 Over To You bit.ly/1Wirltt binged.it/1M1P74U Do You Remember Sonny and Cher Recognise these two? I had them straight away, but my wife Angie had to think about it. “Oh, it’s Sonny and Cher,” she said at last. “Remember their big hit? It was in the mid sixties,” I said. Angie thought for a minute. “Oh, yes,” she said, “it was ‘I Got You, Babe’.” When that record came out, Angie and I had only been married a couple of years. We were just setting up home. I used to go round the house singing the refrain, “Babe, I got you, babe. I got you, babe.” Then I would give Angie a big kiss and a hug. I soon grew out of it. The song, I mean, not the kissing and hugging! © 2016 Daily Sparkle All rights reserved Fancy dress party outfits Dear Mary and Jimmy When my boys were little, they often got invited to birthday parties. The parties were usually held at home and sometimes they would have a theme. It might be a cowboy party, or a football theme. I remember what a challenge it was to think of a costume for a fancy dress party with a ‘Spaceman’ theme. We did quite well in the end, with colanders and swimming goggles and lots of silver painted cardboard. The children thought it was very exciting to be spacemen, instead of the usual knights or soldiers. Best wishes, from Pauline www.dailysparkle.co.uk 1 May 2016 Page 2 bit.ly/1QAASZr Pets Corner 1.
