Summer Reading for Rising 5th Grade Summer of 2016 Each rising fifth grade student is required to read the following books: 1. The View from Saturday by E.L. Konigsburg . 2. Have You Filled A Bucket Today? By Carol McCloud--We encourage parents and students to read this book together. The ideas contained in this book relate to the virtues work we have done throughout this year and will do in the upcoming school year. During the first week of school, students will meet in small groups to discuss the ideas in this book. The required books listed above as well as the suggested book lists below have been created to encourage the love of reading. We want each student to challenge him/herself to read as many PAGES as possible over the summer and record those numbers in the summer reading log. If a book is read in digital format, the total number of pages can be found under “Product Details” on the Amazon and Barnes & Noble websites. Record either the hardback or paperback total. This will allow each child to feel successful as a reader. Our main goal is for our students to ENJOY reading! Each year the SC Association of School Librarians presents a Book Award to the favorite picture, children’s, junior and young adult book as voted upon by the children of South Carolina. The lists of the 2016-17 nominees can be found at http://scasl.net under “Book Awards.” Mrs. Easter would love to have as many students as possible vote in the Children’s Book Award category in March. To be qualified to vote a student has to have read five books from the list. So please consider these as additions to our Suggested Reading List. Reading lists have been sent to the Charleston County Library branches, and the local Barnes & Noble stores. They are also on the Porter-Gaud website under Lower School Reading Lists.
