Walmersley-with-Shuttleworth
Is an extensive township on the east bank of the Irwell, extending
from about two to five miles from Bury. It contains 5,065 acres, and
its rateable value amounts to £85,921. The population in 1851 was
4,802 ; 1861, 5,298; 1871, 5,558 ; and 1881, 5,519. In Walmersley are the remains of a beacon, probably erected in the time of Queen
Elizabeth, under the influence of the threatened invasion from the
Spanish armada. On a neighbouring hill a prospect tower was erected
by the Grants in 1829, and a better situation could scarcely have been
found. In a clear atmosphere the estuary of the Mersey, near B,uncorn, is seen from this elevated station. A church, dedicated to St.
Saviour, was erected in Walmersley in 1838 ; but this has been
entirely pulled down, and the present handsome edifice erected in its
stead. It was consecrated by the Bishop of Manchester on the 19th
September this year (1883). It is in the early English style of

architecture, from designs by Messrs. Maxwell & Tuke, of Bury ; is
cruciform in plan, with nave, aisles, north and south transepts,
chancel, organ chamber, vestries, and tower. The cost without the
tower was about £5,000. A splendid organ was presented by Mr.
James Jardine, of Manchester, who also gave a fine stained-glass
window. Another similar window was presented by the executors of
the late Mr. Hall, of Nangreaves, and three others by Mrs. Nuttall
and the Misses Chadwick. The window at the east end was replaced
here from the old church. The church will seat about 700 persons.
The benefice is a vicarage of the annual value of £270, with residence,
in the patronage of five trustees, and held by the Rev. John David
Evans, M.A. Population of the parish in 1881, 2,637. Service is
also held at the school, Buckhurst, by the vicar of Walmersley. At Park
is an Independent Chapel, erected in 1798, and rebuilt in 1866 ; but the
original building dates from 1664, it beiug the first chapel erected in
Walmersley. The Sunday school was formerly taught by ancestors
of Sir U. J. Kay-Shuttleworth, who are buried in the chapel, and to
whose memory two fine tablets are erected. John Kay, who resided
at Park Farm, invented the fly shuttlej Rev. Henry Banks is the
present pastor. AtPigsleeis a Conservative Club, formed, in 1881.
The Methodist Free Church at Patmos was built in 1836, and rebuilt
in 1874. SHUTTLEWORTH was created an independent parish
under Vict. 6th and 7th, c. 37. Excellent stone for building purposes is
extensively procured from the stone quarries. Whittle Pike, in this
district, is 1,614 feet above the sea level. The church, dedicated to
St. John the Baptist, was consecrated February 12th, 1848. Its
style of architecture is that which prevailed in the 14th century, and
the cost of its erection was £2,499. It contains 413 sittings, of which
284 are free. The benefice is a vicarage, of the annual value of £160,
in the patronage of the Crown and Bishop alternately, and held by
the Rev. Edwin Dyson. Population of the parish in 1881, 3,423.
The Baptists have a chapel in Bank Lane ; and here also is a
Mechanics' Institute, pretty well patronised.

PILKINGTON
Is an extensive township in the parish of Prestwich, and it contains
the villages or hamlets of Whitefield (6£ miles from Manchester),
Stand, Stand Lane, Unsworth, Hollins, Besses o' th' Barn, Outwood,
and Ringleu. Its population in 1851 was 12,363 ; 1861, 12,303 ;
1871, 11,949 ; and 1881, 13,144 souls. The area of the township
is 5,469 acres, and its rateable value amounts to £68,645. The most
thickly inhabited portion of the township is governed by the Wldtefield Local Board, formed in 1866, and which consists of twelve
members, whose offices are in Elms Street.
The knightly family of Pilkington were seated at Pilkington
Tower, or Stand, in this township, soon after the conquest. They
were not, however, the chief lords of this manor, for it appears that
Roger de Pilkington, in the reign of Jolin, or Henry III., was found
to hold the fourth part of a knight's fee, of the fee of Thomas de
Gretley, who then held it under the Earl of Ferrers, the King's tenant
in chief. In the reign of Edward III., Henry de Lacey had a bovate
of land in Pilkington, and the manor of Chadderton, with twelve
acres of land in fee. In 35 Edward III., Pilkington is mentioned in
the inquisition taken on the death of Henry, Duke of Lancaster, as
a fee of the honour of Tuttebury. Stand Hall is now the residence
of Thomas Statter, Esq., steward to the Earl of Derby.
All Saints' Church, Stand, occupies a commanding position, and
can be seen for several miles round. The foundation stone was laid
by the Earl of Wiltcn, August 3rd, 1822, and the building was consecrated by Dr. Bloomfield, the then Bishop of Chester, September
8th, 1826. The style of architecture is that of the fourteenth century.
The Church contains a nave and side aisles with spacious galleries,
and at the west end of the nave is an open arcade, with noble arched
entrance, from which a lofty tower rises to the height of 186 feet.
The entire cost of the church, exclusive of site, which was presented

by the Earl of Derby, was £14,987. Considerable alterations have
recently been effected in the interior, especially in the chancel, which
has been enlarged by the addition of a choir and clergy vestries. A
new reredos has been presented by Mr. George Eichardson ; the
organ has been removed here from the west gallery; and two
memorial stained windows have been put in. A geometrical stained
window has also been placed in the west gallery, which, along with the
north and south galleries, have been re-pewed. The cost, exclusive of
windows, &c., was £1,400. The church contains 1,860 sittings, of
which 9GO are free. The benefice is a rectory of the annual value of
£380, in the patronage of the Earl of Wilton, and held by the Rev.
George Rudd. The population of the parish in 1881 was 5,387.
St. George's Church, Unsworth, is a plain edifice erected in 1730, and
re-built in 1843. It contains 472 sittings, of which 400 are free.
The benefice is a perpetual curacy of the annual value of £240, in the
patronage of the rector of Prestwich, and held by the Rev. Benjamin
Crompton, M.A. Population of the parish in 1881, 2,024. St.
John the Evangelist's Church, Stand Lane, is mentioned in the description of Radcliffe. St. Saviour's Church, Ringley, was erected in
1626. It was re-built in 1854, from a design by Mr. E. G. Paley, at
a cost of £2,500. It contains 560 sittings all of which are free. The
benefice is a perpetual curacy of the annual value of £250, in the
patronage of the rectors of Prestwich, Bury, and Middleton, and held
by the Rev. Janies Potter, B.A. Population of the parish in 1881,
1,588. The tower of the ancient edifice is still standing, and it bears
the inscription " Nathan Walworth builded mee Anno Do., 1627."
The Unitarian Church, Stand, is a prettily situated building, and
dates from 1695. It was renovated in 1818. Rev. W. C. Squicr,
minister. Here is a Grammar School founded in 1688. Rev. W. C.
Squier is head master. The Wedeyan Methodists have a neat chapel
at Unsworth, built in 1847. The Primitive Methodist Chapel is
situate at Chapelfield ; and here also is an Independent Chapel, dating
from 1665. Rev. Alexander Anderson, B.A., pastor. The Independents have another Chapel at Besses o' th' Barn. The New Jerusalem
Church is also situated at Besses o' th' Barn. It was enlarged this
year (1883), and is a neat brick edifice with stone dressings. Rev.
Isaiah Tansley, pastor. There are several elementary schools in the
district; and that in connection with All Saints' Church is situate in
Elms Street, and was erected in 1874. The Conservative Club is also
situate in Elms Street. At Hollins is a well patronised Institute.
Whitefield is now connected with Manchester and other important
places through the formation of the line of railway through the district,
and which was opened for traffic September 1st, 1879. The district is
lighted with gas by the Radcliffa and Pilkington Gas Company, and
supplied with water from the Bury Waterworks. The acreage of the
Local Board district is 2,025 acres, and the population is about 9,500
souls. The Jews'1 Cemetery, situated in this township, is enclosed by

carried on, to become a town of considerable importance. The
