FULL STORY IN SPORT: PAGE 56 Footy riot over 700km By SARAH CRAWFORD A VIOLENT clash that began just before a flight out of Darwin was eventually stopped by police — 700km away on Groote Eylandt. Police confiscated a number of spears, machetes, a bow and spear guns. Officer in Charge at Alyangula Police Station, Lee Morgan, said about 70 people gathered for the fight at Angurugu on Monday at 11am. ‘‘We got there just in time and started grabbing weapons off people,’’ Senior Sergeant Morgan said. The officers confiscated 20 spears, two spear guns, three large machetes and a bow and five arrows from about 20 people in the crowd. ‘‘Fortunately no one was injured. We had trust in the fact they were not going to harm us, we just walked up and took the weapons,’’ SenSgt Morgan said. The dispute between two families started when community members travelled to Darwin at the weekend for a Defence Jobs pre-season NT Football League Carnival. A fight broke out between 20 community members just before they boarded a charter flight from Darwin to Groote Eylandt on Sunday night. Later that evening police responded to several reports of people fighting with weapons at Angurugu. But when they arrived the community was peaceful. Sen-Sgt Morgan said that the next day police were called minutes before a large fight broke out near the water tower. Sen-Sgt Morgan said there have been no further disturbances in the remote community. ‘‘The families aren’t willing to be involved in a mediation, they are going to sort it out themselves,’’ he said. Cyclone Tasha first in line to shake us By ELODIE BOAL TERRITORIANS should start preparing for the latest dinner guest, Cyclone Tasha, who could be knocking on our doors very soon. As the cyclone season quickly approaches, and the summer storm conditions in Australia intensify, the weather bureau’s list of cyclone names can expect to get a workout. The list includes 104 different entries which rotate between genders. With the last tropical cyclone being dubbed Sean, Australians can expect the first upcoming cyclone to be christened Tasha. Other names on the list include Vince, Zelia, Anthony and Bianca. Once a name has been used, it is then replaced with a similar one.. The only consideration that may delay Tasha’s arrival is if an already-named cyclone enters Australia’s cyclone zone. However, until then, prepare an emergency kit as we await the arrival of some of the wildest and rowdiest of dinner guests. Telstra research shows people are addicted to internet-connected phones and are using them to surf the web everywhere — including the dunny Picture: STUART WALMSLEY AUSTRALIANS are avid ceramic surfers, with a new study suggesting one-third of people have no problems sitting on the toilet and fiddling with their ‘‘smartphones’’. Telstra research has revealed many users are addicted to their internet-connected phones — such as the iPhone — and take them to bed, to the toilet, or use them behind the wheel. The survey of 2800 people showed about half of owners used their smartphones in bed — with 54 per cent of women and 49 per cent of men admitting to the deed. Meanwhile, almost one-third of One in five Aussie drivers admit to surfing the web while driving respondents said they had ‘‘throne-surfed’’ — surfing the web while on the toilet. Men were the more likely culprits, with 38 per cent admitting to it, compared with 22 per cent of women. Telstra’s Rebekah O’Flaherty pointed out smartphones hadn’t managed to make drivers smarter. Apparently one in five Aussie drivers admit to surfing the web while driving — despite it being illegal and ridiculously dangerous for themselves and others. Ms O’Flaherty said their research had found 36 per cent of Australians with mobiles owned a smartphone. She said smartphone ownership levels were tipped to grow to more than half the mobile population within a year. ‘‘At home in front of the tele, in the bathroom or in bed, smartphones have become an indispensable way to get connected,’’ she said. $500 in DVDs to be won The Wet Season’s here so get your DVD collection ready for the rainy days on your couch.
