Proposal: After School Spanish Exploration Class 2004-05

Childswork is very pleased to announce that the Spanish Exploration Classes will be returning this September.
These classes will provide an opportunity for students ages three and up (must turn three by the time the
session begins) to build a foundation of basic Spanish language comprehension and speaking and to build an
understanding of cultural diversity within a curriculum that explores various Spanish-speaking cultures.
Debbie Hohn will be teaching this class. Debbie teaches morning preschool, and has also been teaching the
Spanish Enrichment class since it began.
Classes will be available Monday 1:00-3:00 pm and Thursday 1:00-3:00 pm. Children are able to sign up for
one day or both days.
Curriculum Components:
1) Opening Circle:
Circle will be almost entirely immersion-based as the children become comfortable with the language.
News, sharing, weather and other daily activities that may be a part of routines in their morning classes
will be conducted in Spanish. This portion will be highly interactive, facilitating the augmentation of
Spanish vocabulary through conversation.
2) Music, Movement and Games:
These will be conducted primarily in Spanish as vocabulary skills increase, enabling children to follow
instructions given in Spanish. In addition, this portion will incorporate Spanish-language songs as well as
folk songs from various Spanish-speaking countries.
3) Investigation of Spanish Speaking Countries:
This component will include more English in order to ensure deeper understanding, although Spanish
language will also be incorporated. This exploration will focus on geography, culture, music, traditional
games, and arts and crafts of individual Spanish speaking countries.
4) Art:
Children will create art projects exploring the artistic traditions of countries or topics being investigated.
They will also participate in acting out familiar stories and folk tales using Spanish vocabulary.
5). Food:
Children will prepare and enjoy simple foods from countries and regions studied.
6) Literature:
Simple and/or familiar stories and folk tales will be presented in both English and Spanish.

Enrichment programs are filled on a first come first served basis, which means we fill the classes as the
forms come in. You have the option to sign up for any or all sessions that you want, but please note you will
be enrolled in the class(es) only for the sessions you checked on your form. Families can sign up for
enrichment programs all year long and if the class is full you will be put on a wait list.
Children must be three by the beginning of the session to be enrolled in the enrichment programs. We
encourage families to sign up for enrichment at the beginning of the year even if your child will not be starting
a class until Winter or Spring session.
We will notify families if there is not adequate enrollment to proceed with the class.
Cancellation Policy:
Childswork purchases materials and contracts staff based on the number of children enrolled
in Enrichment classes. Therefore, cancellations with full refunds can be made in writing up to two weeks
before the start of the session. After that, no refunds will be made.
