We wish you lots of love and laughter today and every day! There is no school next week. Please make sure that your child(ren) get healthy (plenty of rest, fluids, tender loving care, and doctor visits, if needed) and practice healthy habits at home. We would like to see all of our students and staff back at Birch Grove healthy and ready to learn after the break! It is very important that your child read or be read to over the break. Any reading material will work!! Comic books, cook books, magazines, the local paper, library books, any thing at all!! The more fun or interesting the material, the better! Read with your child! Let them see that you know that reading is important! Thank you! Birch Grove Community School will be offering two summer programs this year! Campsite Kids (in the Outdoor Classroom) for K-5 and a summer Saplings program for 3-5 year olds. Information and registration for these programs will be put in Take Home Folder in March. Please look for this, as space for these programs is limited. Information and registration forms will go out in Take Home Folders prior to the general public, so if you want to ensure your child gets registered, turn your paperwork in early! It is going to be a great summer at Birch Grove! Pink, red, white with a little purple thrown in! We talked about what a valentine is and who could be your valentine. Cute little cupid made an appearance in a letter review game. The children practiced identifying one another’s names while singing a valentine song and passing a basket of hearts with names on them. The letter of the week V, fit in nicely with valentine and love. We also began working on learning the color words. This will continue for several weeks. We wrapped up Thursday, Valentine’s Day, with a small celebration. The children exchanged valentines, played a few games and decorated cupcakes for their snack. It was a fun and busy week! Enjoy some quality time with your sweet From Miss Smith: Kindergarten and First Grade Teacher Happy Valentine’s Day! Happy 100th Day! Happy Spring Break! We have been hard at work this week finishing up things up before the break. We have been reviewing skills we learned throughout the year. Kindergarten has completed their first reading work book this week. We have gone back and filled in holes on things were not finished. First grade worked on time, money and addition. They had a blast reading a variety of non fiction books about animals. Kindergarten reviewed measurement tools, patterns, and ordinal numbers. When we get back from our week off we will be starting new themes in reading and math for both groups! Hope your vacation is restful and fun! From Miss Miller Second and Third Grade Teacher This week in 2/3 we have been very busy. In reading we read a new story, Little Grunt and the Big Egg, by Tomie dePaola. Students also read a non-fiction piece about dinosaurs. We continue to work on plural nouns, possessive nouns, and plural possessive nouns. Whew! We are busy learning. In second grade math we continue to practice multiplication. They keep asking me, "Why are we learning multiplication in 2nd grade!?" I tell them it's because they are so smart! They are doing a fantastic job with the beginning of multiplication. In third grade we also are working on multiplication, as well as division. Practice, practice, practice! We are also continuing to review finding area and perimeter of shapes. Today we celebrate Valentine's Day and the 100th day of school. What an exciting day! I hope you all have a nice week off from school. :) From Mr. Chenevert Fourth and Fifth Grade Teacher What a week! It started with a snow day, moved through Valentine’s Day and ended with us getting ready for a week break! In there, we still managed to fit in a lot of learning as well. In reading this week, both groups read stories relating to the Chinese culture. The 4th graders read The Last Dragon, a fun story about a boy who goes to live with his aunt in Chinatown for the summer. The 5th graders read Yang the Second and Her Secret Admirers, a fun story to read around Valentine’s Day. We have been doing writing almost everyday in our journals as we work on expanding upon ideas and adding details too. In math, both groups are moving along with their units. The 5th graders are still working with fractions, where they are comparing them, adding and subtracting them, and finding common denominators. The 4th graders are working on different ways to multiply multi-digit numbers, like the Partial-Products method, the Lattice method, and the good old Standard method. Have a wonderful break we’ll see you back here on the 25th!
