he New Year heralds a host of superb dramas for television viewers, as WETA TV 26 and
WETA HD present new productions in addition to new episodes from some audience favorites.
Topping the bill on Sunday nights is the new seven-part Masterpiece series Victoria, which spotlights the beginning
of the young British monarch’s reign as she shows her mettle and becomes the most powerful woman on Earth. Also
on Sundays in January, the blockbuster mystery series Sherlock on Masterpiece features new episodes starring international superstar Benedict Cumberbatch as the great detective — and a new season of PBS’s popular Civil War drama
Mercy Street, set locally in Alexandria, Virginia, extends the drama into the theater of war. For broadcast on Thursday
nights throughout the month, WETA has acquired a second series of Australian legal thriller Janet King, along with
the BBC mystery series The Coroner. Settle in with these entertaining productions, most of which run into February
(and some even into March), and then stay tuned later in the spring for new seasons of Call the Midwife and
Masterpiece production Home Fires.
Remember that there is also a magnificent selection of additional dramas to enjoy each month on our WETA UK
channel, which is rolling out a wide array of new offerings as well. These include the satirical comic-drama W1A, with
Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville, and the Australian romantic drama A Place to Call Home, with Marta Dusseldorp,

ays before the inauguration of the 45th American president, a four-hour, two-night
Frontline documentary miniseries looks back at events during the Obama presidency that
have revealed deep divisions in our country, examining the America the next president
will inherit. The program offers an in-depth view of the partisanship that gridlocked
Washington and charged the 2016 presidential campaign, the rise of populist anger on
both sides of the aisle and the racial tensions that have erupted throughout the nation.
Drawing on extensive new interviews with White House and Congressional insiders from
both parties, as well as Frontline’s reporting on the Obama era, the special program digs into the causes of America’s
intense polarization and questions how the next president and Congress can govern in an era of complex challenges.
Part One, on January 17, investigates political divisions and bitter polarization that grew during the Obama presidency,
and examines how President Obama’s promise of change and unity collided with racial and political realities. Part Two,
on January 18, examines racial tensions in America, the war for control of the GOP and the growing dysfunction in
Washington. Also on Frontline in January are President Trump, airing Tuesday, January 3 at 10 p.m., examining key
moments that shaped the President-elect; and Trump’s Road to the White House, airing Tuesday, January 24 at 10 p.m.

Sherlock, Season 4 on
Masterpiece
enedict Cumberbatch (Dr. Strange) and Martin Freeman
(Fargo) return this month for a fourth season of the Emmy Awardwinning series Sherlock on Masterpiece. The three-part event
begins with the mercurial Sherlock Holmes back on British soil, and Doctor Watson and his wife Mary preparing
for their biggest challenge yet: becoming parents. Toby Jones (Infamous) guest-stars as one of Arthur Conan Doyle’s
greatest villains. Details are closely held, as the series premieres worldwide on New Year’s Day, but co-creators,
writers and executive producers Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss (who portrays Sherlock’s brother, Mycroft Holmes)
said: “Whatever else we do, wherever we all go, all roads lead back to Baker Street — and it always feels like coming
home. Ghosts of the past are rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, bringing adventure, romance
and terror in their wake. This is the story we’ve been telling from the beginning and it’s about to reach its climax.”
The first two programs appear to be modern-day updates of original Arthur Conan Doyle stories The Six Napoleons
and The Lying Detective. The latter story features Culverton Smith, whom Jones will portray.

oming to TV 26 this month is the 10-part BBC series The Coroner, starring Claire Goose
as highflying city lawyer Jane Kennedy, who returns to her South Devon hometown to take
a job as coroner and investigate crimes in the beautiful seaside region. Kennedy finds herself
working alongside her childhood sweetheart Davey Higgins (Matt Bardock) — now the local
detective sergeant for the South Dart Police — to probe the sudden or unexplained deaths
of residents and tourists alike. The series, from the same production team that creates Father
Brown, features a new case in each episode, and running alongside each mystery is the warmhearted ebb and flow of Jane’s relationships with colleagues, family and the local community.
The Coroner also airs Mondays on WETA UK.
Also in January, award-winning actress Marta Dusseldorp returns as a brilliant senior
crown prosecutor in Series 2 of the Australian legal drama Janet King. In the new eight-part
season — which opens two years after events in Series 1 — the attorney general tasks King
with heading a royal commission into serious firearm crime. Recruiting some of her old
team from the Department of Public Prosecutions, King begins her work and soon discovers
evidence related to a slaying that personally devastated her. Uncovering the truth makes King
and the high-profile commission a target, leading to many twists and turns in the plot. The
series also airs Mondays on WETA UK, which features Dusseldorp in another Australian
drama, A Place to Call Home, as well.

relates a cautionary tale of freak accidents, near misses, human fallibility,
and extraordinary heroism: the long-hidden story of a deadly 1980 accident
at a Titan II missile complex in Damascus, Arkansas. The film presents the
terrifying truth about the management of America’s nuclear arsenal and shows
what can happen when weapons built to protect us threaten to destroy us. Featuring the minute-by-minute accounts
of those who were on the scene, the film reveals the unlikely chain of events that caused the accident and the feverish
efforts to prevent the explosion of a ballistic missile carrying the most powerful nuclear warhead ever built by
the United States. Woven through the Damascus story is a history of America’s nuclear weapons program from
World War II through the Cold War.

ature reveals surprising wildlife survival strategies and adaptations in a new program,
Snowbound: Animals of Winter. In the film, wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan visits some
of the coldest and snowiest places on Earth to get close enough to profile the animals that outlast
the chill: creatures who adapt to their surroundings or use strategies to survive, like the wolf, Arctic
fox, bison, reindeer, lynx, weasel, polar bear, penguin, Weddell seal and woolly bear caterpillar.
Whether it’s undergoing a physical adaptation, using super senses, employing clever tactics to gain
the advantage, or just being built for frigid conditions, these animals of winter not only subsist,
but thrive in some of the harshest conditions on the planet. Other Wednesday Nature programs
this month spotlight coywolves (January 4); moose (January 18) and sloths (January 25).

ilm legend Sidney Lumet (1924-2011) tells his own story in a never-before-seen interview,
with candor, humor and grace revealing what matters to him as an artist and as a human being.
The documentary features clips from Lumet’s works — 44 films made in 50 years, including
Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, 12 Angry Men, Network, The Verdict (right: Lumet directing Paul
Newman and Charlotte Rampling); Prince of the City and Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead.
The two-hour program, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, weaves Lumet’s personal stories and commentary
with scenes from his films to create a portrait of one of the most accomplished, influential and socially conscious
directors in the history of cinema. His movies often featured characters fighting for justice, standing up to the crowd and
questioning personal responsibility. First and foremost a storyteller, Lumet’s strongly moral tales captured the dilemmas
and concerns of a society struggling with essentials: how does one behave to others and to oneself?

enna Coleman (Doctor Who) stars as the diminutive, neglected teenager crowned Queen Victoria in a Masterpiece
drama that explores the outset of the monarch’s epic reign. Created and scripted by bestselling novelist Daisy Goodwin,
Victoria airs in seven parts starting with a 2-hour premiere episode on January 15. The fact-based series is a gripping
historical pageant that reveals a side of Victoria that is at odds with her later reputation for prudery and a high moral
tone. Following the queen from her accession to the throne at age 18 in 1837, through her education in politics,
courtship and marriage, Victoria paints a portrait of a monarch who was raised to be the pawn of her powerful elders,
but who wasted no time in showing the empire who was in charge.
The stellar cast includes Rufus Sewell (Middlemarch, Zen) as Lord Melbourne, the British prime minister who was
Victoria’s father figure and intimate friend; and Tom Hughes (Dancing on the Edge) as the handsome, brilliant and
awkward Prince Albert, who stole Victoria’s heart after a rocky start. The engaging drama depicts what it was like for
the ill-educated, emotionally deprived young woman to wake up one morning and find that she is the most powerful
woman in the world. Victoria charts how the new ruler rose to the challenge and weathered a series of crises without
ever losing her youthful charm and innate sense of justice, which made her popular with her subjects.

New season of the Civil War
drama moves beyond the
Mansion House hospital.
I
n a new season of the acclaimed PBS Civil War drama Mercy Street — set in the occupied city of Alexandria, Virginia
— allegiances blur, loyalties shift and the drama intensifies as the scope of the war pushes beyond Mansion House, the
former hotel commandeered by northern troops to serve as a Union hospital. The series follows doctors, nurses and
soldiers, as well as free, enslaved and contraband African Americans and other residents of the war-torn city, as they
navigate the new world emerging from the cataclysmic conflict.
Season Two picks up directly from the dramatic events at the end of the first season finale, continuing to explore life
in chaotic Alexandria, the complicated interpersonal dynamics of Dr. Foster, Nurse Mary and the Mansion House staff,
the increasingly precarious position of the Green family and the changing world of the burgeoning black population.
The second season navigates closer to the battlefields and into the halls of Confederate power, all set against the
intensifying war, from the Seven Days’ Battle to Antietam. The new season also delves deeper into the lives of newly
freed African Americans, exploring — among other areas — life in a contraband camp, where formerly enslaved
African Americans confront terrible living conditions and disease, but also get a glimpse of freedom. The drama stars
an ensemble cast that includes McKinley Belcher III, Gary Cole, Hannah James, Patina Miller, Josh Radnor and
Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

Filled with both adventure and silliness, The Cat In The Hat Knows a Lot
About That!, based on the acclaimed The Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library
book series, appeals to preschoolers’ natural curiosity and engages them in
the process of scientific exploration and discovery. A team of science and early
childhood experts developed the curriculum for the series, each episode of
which begins with a question posed by Sally or Nick. Although the Cat in the
Hat knows a lot of things, his insatiable curiosity to learn more about the world
leads to adventures with Sally and Nick in his one-of-a-kind Thinga-ma-jigger,
a marvelously Seuss-ian contraption that sprouts wings, pontoons, booster
rockets, skis and just about anything else needed to find the answer.

is filmed. After demonstrating his well-meaning ineptitude at the Olympic Deliverance
Commission, Ian Fletcher has now joined the BBC as its new Head of Values, a position
through which he hopes to shape one of Britain’s great institutions. The job overwhelms him
immediately, however, and he discovers that the board has also hired PR company Perfect
Curve’s Siobhan Sharpe (Jessica Hynes) as the “Ginger Rogers to his Fred Astaire.”

n the New Zealand mystery series, filmed in the Greater Auckland region, Detective
Inspector Mike Shepherd arrives on assignment in Brokenwood, a seemingly quiet small
town where memories — and animosities — run deep. He’s an experienced cop with a 1971
“classic” car, a collection of country music cassettes, and an indeterminate number of ex-wives.
The new woman in his life is his assistant, Detective Constable Kristin Sims, a by-the-book investigator nearly
20 years younger than her boss’s car. She must get used to the DI’s lone-wolf ways. Series I features four cases.

oncerts from the Library of Congress, a series co-produced by WETA,
the Library of Congress and Classic Digital Syndications, concludes its
season on Classical WETA 90.9 FM with the January 7, 9 p.m. broadcast.
Pavel Hass Quartet
The hour-long programs were funded in part by WETA members.
The final concert program of the series, Debussy and Dvořák, is a “best of the best” package featuring artists at the top
of their game. Violinist Jennifer Koh delivers a breathtaking Debussy sonata performance (G minor, L. 140) with pianist
Ieva Jokubaviciute. The Pavel Haas Quartet demonstrates what Gramophone defines as “the best qualities of the Czech
tradition — warmth, sonorousness, individuality, intensity.” In Antonín Dvořák’s String Quartet in F major, op. 96, these
superb, quintessentially Czech artists summon a vivid impression of the American countryside.

ew music is no stranger to Classical WETA Sunday-night
broadcast Choral Showcase, and, for the new year, we focus on the
new while contrasting with the past. One of the works we feature
on New Year’s Day does both. It’s Messe Ancienne, by American
composer Trevor Weston (performed by Julian Wachner’s Choir of
Trinity Wall Street). Weston explains that most of his choral singing
has been in early music; this work, a short Mass setting, is both an
homage to the past and a provocative expression in the composer’s
own voice that encourages you to soar above the mundane. Another
young composer who will move you to new places is Norwegianborn, New York-based Ola Gjeilo (pron. YAY-lo). On January 1,
among several of his works we air is Dark Night of the Soul, about
our surrender to the divine upon death. The program also features
Palestrina sung by the Tallis Scholars.
A new recording of the Mozart Requiem using the work’s oldest
completion — the first of many — airs on January 8. New and old
pieces on Christ’s Passion are scheduled on January 15, including
Stabat Mater settings by Rossini and Verdi, and Seven Last Words
by Michael John Trotta, an American composer who is intimately
familiar with the expressive abilities of the human voice. Our New
& Old program on January 22 is mostly English. It includes a
2016 piece by John Rutter — a four-movement setting of Biblical
and other texts — that soars to great heights with violin solo, string
orchestra, and chorus of boys. Also rising to the occasion on the
program is the ensemble The Cardinall’s Musick with a piece by
Thomas Tallis for 40 solo voices! The 40-Part Motet!

Pianist Christopher Taylor is known for his exceptional artistry as a performer, but in addition to concertizing and
teaching piano at the University of Wisconsin, he’s also a Harvard grad in math, a published philosopher, a computer
software developer, linguist, and avid bicycle commuter. Hear his Dumbarton Oaks recital including Bach’s French
Suite No. 1, Scriabin’s Twelve Études, and Brahms’ Opus 1 piano sonata on our January 9 broadcast.
On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 16, we present Grammy-winning guitarist Jason Vieaux from his October
2016 John E. Marlow Guitar Series recital. In addition to such favorites as Tárrega’s Recuerdos de la Alhambra and
Barrios’ Julia Florida, Mr. Vieaux performs Duke Ellington’s In a Sentimental Mood and his own new arrangement of
Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World.
The final two Mondays in January feature the Mendelssohn Piano Trio at the National Gallery of Art’s 2016
Beethoven Trio Festival. In addition to the E-flat trios of Opus 1 and Opus 70, they perform Beethoven’s “Kakadu”
Variations and the beloved “Archduke” Trio.

nce upon a time, there was an evil sorcerer whose name was Kashchei. He had a nasty habit of abducting fair
maidens and turning their knights to stone. One day, Prince Ivan wandered into Kashchei’s garden, chasing a beautiful
Firebird. Needless to say, the Prince fell in love with one of the maidens, and with the help of the Firebird, rescued all
of Kashchei’s victims. Enjoy the magic as Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s broadcast NSO Showcase brings you Stravinsky’s
Firebird Suite and three other exotic fairy tales.
We’ll hear Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite, from the music he wrote for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes.
This fashionable Commedia dell’Arte-inspired ballet featured costumes by Picasso.
Another entrancing tale stars an ethereal young maiden, Mélisande, who wanders in a forest until
she is found by Prince Golaud. But this prince has an even more charming brother, Pelléas. You can
imagine what happens next. Gabriel Fauré wrote the incidental music for Maurice Maeterlinck’s play,
Pelléas et Mélisande, and fashioned the Suite which includes the famous Sicilienne.
And finally, Kodály’s comic opera, Háry János, describes the legendary exploits of a hero who manages to single-handedly defeat Napoleon. True story? You be the judge: the Suite from the opera begins
with an orchestral sneeze, an ironic Hungarian comment on the veracity of the tall tale that follows.
Conductors for these four highly colorful fairy tale suites on the January NSO Showcase program
include Rossen Milanov and Juraj Valcuha for the Stravinsky Firebird and Pulcinella Suites; Matthias
Pintscher for Pelléas et Mélisande, and Neeme Järvi for Háry János. Tune in on Wednesday, January 4
