Dear Parents/ Carers
Gifted and talented readers
A big well done to the Y5 gifted and talented reading group who took part in the
Coventry library reading competition on Thursday 9th February. The children had to
read three chosen books and answer questions about them. They also had a general
knowledge round which tested their knowledge of classic children's books. The
children did themselves and their school proud and scored a respectable 34 out of 40
but were narrowly beaten to a place in the finals.

Captain Conjecture’s Challenge
`
Did you know...The heart weighs between 200 and 425g
• An adult heart beats 100,000 times a day.
Dotty Six
• The heartrate of a new-born baby is 70 - 160 beats per minute.
• A woman’s average heartbeat is faster than a man’s by 8 beats per minute.
• A child’s heart is the same size as their clenched fist.
• In an average lifetime, the human heart will beat more than 2.5 billion times.
• The heart pumps 380 litres of blood through your body every single hour.
• A kitchen tap would need to be turned on fully for 45 years to equal the amount of blood pumped
by the heart in an average lifetime.
• When the body is at rest, it takes only 8 seconds for the blood to go from the heart to the brain
and back.
• Every day your heart creates enough energy to drive a truck for 20 miles
Captain Conjecture
If you have brothers or sisters, estimate who has the smallest heart.
If a woman’s average heart rate is 78 beats a minute,
what is a man’s?
How far could you drive in a week using the energy created by
your heart?
If you are ten years old today, how far could you have driven using the
energy created by your heart? Show and explain your strategy.
