While followers of Dr. Francis E. Townsend, the pension plan
founder, ended their 1939 national convention in Indianapolis with
a giant rally, revolters against the Townsend leadership laid plans
for an "independent" organisation, Dr. Townsend, shown with his
son Robert, urged his followers to "go home and work for a Town-sen- d
congress In 1940." Objection to son Robert succeeding to the
presidency when Dr. Townsend no longer is able to serve, was one
