What were the
achievements of
the Egyptians
during the New
Kingdom period?
New Kingdom Rulers
• Pharaoh – The word meant “Great
House” in the Old Kingdom. Later it
was the name of the king.
• Hatshepsut – She was a famous
“Pharaoh” of Ancient Egypt. When her
nephew was set to become pharaoh,
she stepped in temporarily.
– Hatshepsut held power for 20 years.
– She had temples rebuilt, increased trade,
and created a time of peace and prosperity
for Egypt.
New Kingdom Rulers
• Thutmose III (3rd) – He
became pharaoh when
his aunt Hatshepsut
died. He hated his aunt
for stealing his throne.
– During his reign he led 16
military raids into the
Middle East.
– His victories made Egypt
very rich.
• An obelisk was a giant
granite pillar.
Achievements of the Egyptians
• A Better Calendar – The Egyptians invented
calendar that was more accurate than the
Mesopotamian one.
• Medicine – The Egyptians had the first medical
books; they described illnesses and how to
treat them.
• The Arts – Art was done to serve the king.
Many of these artists worked to decorate a
king’s tomb.
