What a difference we make ! ® A Message from Jane and Nathalie and our Mosaic Team! A s we leave the Winter months behind, again, and welcome the glory of Spring’s new beginnings, we would like to update you with important news on our growing community partnerships and relationships. Our newsletters regularly provide information on our existing partnerships. In this newsletter we would like to extend a very warm community welcome to Evergreen. The following is taken from their website: “Evergreen provides community based supportive services to individuals and their families in Markham, Stouffville and Thornhill, who are living with a life-threatening illness or coping with the death of a loved one.” Please welcome and help support Evergreen in the community. The following is a message from Jan Pearce, Executive Director of the Evergeen Hospice: “Evergreen is delighted to be partnering with MOSAIC HOME CARE SERVICES & COMMUNITY RESOURCE CENTRES to provide counseling and support services in the Thornhill community. Moving from their site in the farthest West part of their catchment area near Dufferin to MOSAIC, allows Evergreen bereavement clients and caregivers a more central location for counseling and support groups. MOSAIC will also host the Thornhill Hospice Palliative Care Team meetings monthly. MOSAIC already hosts the Healthy Living Now program, which is facilitated by Evergreen volunteers.” “Evergreen’s bereavement counselor, Lerryn Pitcher, will be working from the MOSAIC’S storefront a couple of days a week, meeting with local bereaved people who are registered with Evergreen. Twice a month there will be a Caregiver Support group for clients registered with Evergreen or CHATS (Community Home Assistance to Seniors) who are caring for a loved one or friend, to share the joys and challenges of caregiving.” “All MOSAIC clients who are interested in these programs are welcome to register through Evergreen at 416-499-2185.” “Evergreen looks forward to this expansion of their relationship with MOSAIC!” Jan Pearce Executive Director Evergreen Hospice Quality, Person-Centred Care for all your Home Care needs Person Centred Home Care Elder Caring Plus™ Nursing Lifestyle Companions® Community Resource Centres The Meaning of Me® Mosaic Home Care & Community Resource Centre’s Lifestyle & Companionship Services Mosaic is proud to extend its Lifestyle Service program to include its new Companionship Service. From understanding the values, relationships, history and continuing hobbies and interests of our members our Lifestyle Companions will develop themes explored by the “Meaning of Me®” by organizing day outings, movies, events and other programs that may include attending one of the many events and activities run through our Mosaic Resource Centres. We are now providing this incredible service! Mosaic’s model of care helps meet identified social and emotional needs of older adults within its care through a number of key interactions: Our core “The Meaning of Me®” program provides the basis for an interactive journey and conversation between the caregiver, family member and especially our members. We want to find out who you are, what have you done, what would you like to do, what are your hobbies, experiences, values, friends and family. We want to know you, you are a valuable person! Feedback from our Caregiver Sindhu about “The Meaning of Me®” “Yes, I find it easier to communicate with my client knowing a lot about them. The smile on many of their faces especially when I ask them their history is really heartwarming. One of my clients told me his love story; just like a movie. He was happy: that made me happy and made me feel good; it made my day. Many of them are lonely and require companionship and all they have is their memoires. A recap of their memories freshens up their day, adds cheer and fun. The Meaning of Me® program has helped me in many ways. It helped me understand what Choosing an activity the client is thinking or feeling, it became easier for me to interact with them. Through they like makes me feel this I felt that it is very important to understand their emotions, what they have gone through, how we need to deal with them, what are their likes and dislikes. The questions on relationships and interests got me closer to understanding my client. Unforgettable , moments were the fun part. Many of them had so many stories which made them laugh and sometimes cry. by bringing a smile I spend most of the time communicating. I love listening to stories. The elderly have the on their face, made best stories to tell us. And I feel happy when they are happy because of me. Many of them say God Bless you at the end of the shift and I feel as a care giver I have done my best.” “ I have done something for them brightened their day. ” A Downton Movie Afternoon I at Shepherd Village t was a quiet first few months of the year following the busy holiday season while at the same time also experiencing an outbreak. Mosaic was able to join in the fun with the Downton Abbey viewings by setting up a table display of British items before the show and then we took a few pictures afterward just for fun. You have to admit that Gerald suits the hat he is wearing! Our quarterly puzzle included a Downton Abbey Word Search with a draw to be held at the end of Season One. Puzzles are a great way to keep the brain active and a fun way to remember all the different people in the Downton Abbey household. No need to complete the puzzle to have your name included in the draw but we want you to at least try! Display Table of artifacts and pictures from Downton Abbey time period. We were also lucky to be invited by Edris to set up an information table at the Alzheimer Workshop held March 30th. Over 50 people attended! The speaker was Victoria Jakobson from Alzheimer Society Toronto. Her presentation was very informative and afterwards we had many people come to see our display table which was a great way for Mosaic to get to know some of the residents at Shepherd Village Retirement. Gerald with a resident showing off the different types of country hats. Edris (Shepherd Village staff) and Victoria from Alzheimer Society Toronto. Season Two will be starting on May 1st so if you haven’t already been watching, give it a try, if only to look at the scenery and costumes. Check your monthly calendar for dates/times or connect with Gerald. And, in June, Seniors Month, we will be hosting an afternoon party outside, weather permitting. A flyer will be posted closer to the date, but keep Tuesday June 6th, 2017 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and hope to see you there! A Recent Client Testimonial from one of the members at Shepherd Village Retirement Community: We have received permission from the family to place this in our newsletter. “During the few weeks in hospital and the following 2 weeks at Shepherd Terrace, Mom fell several more times and it was clear that she needed constant care. My mother had fallen and had hip surgery, her dementia excelerated and she needed more one-one-one care. I worked with the Mosaic Team to arrange several shifts per day/night. Abi, Candace and in particular Joanne from the client services division at Mosaic kept me informed at all times about scheduling and made sure that someone was scheduled for all the shifts requested. I would like to commend Michelle and Agnes (Mosaic Caregivers) for their excellent care for Mom. She is very difficult to care for and resistant, sometimes combative. This is hard for everyone around her. I appreciate the care and compassion that these ladies showed every time. There were other caregivers whom I did not meet. Would you please convey my thanks and gratitude for their efforts. It is not an easy job and I appreciate what it takes. Mom’s move happened quickly and I did not get an opportunity to convey this in person.” Thanks Regards, Cathy “I appreciate the care and compassion that these ladies showed every time.” Mosaic’s Pet Corner F or those of us who have pets at some point in our lives, we know how much joy they can bring us. However with that joy also comes frustration at times, like when they chew your favourite shoe or rip up your garden! Eventually you learn to smile and share the story with loved ones. The point being, that they evoke in us emotions that are similar to human relationships. There is so much that pets can do for us! Did you know: uCats, dogs, birds, rabbits can change their behaviour when their diabetic owner’s blood sugar drops. uMonkeys have been trained to help those with spinal cord injuries help with daily tasks. uHorses have a calming effect on humans, especially those with physical disabilities or PTSD. And riding them is even better! Opie uWatching a fish tank for a while can reduce heart rate and lower blood pressure. Our love of animals is not new and this is proven in classic movies over the years. If you haven’t seen some of these, make it a point to do so. You’ll be happy you did! The estimated savings to the health care system for pet owners was over £2.5 billion pounds or about £322 per pet owner. We have provided a list of questions that you should be asking: Buyer Beware — Hiring Privately You may decide to hire a private caregiver: this will undoubtedly be a lower priced option but it is worthwhile being aware of some of the pitfalls and risks. Here are a number of important points to consider when hiring a private caregiver. • Ask for references and telephone numbers. • Ask for criminal background and vulnerable sector check. • Are they experienced in providing the type of care your loved one may need and what designations if any do they have? • Are they bonded and insured and who will be responsible if anything happens? • Are they allowed to work in Canada? • Who will be responsible for paying taxes? • What happens when that caregiver becomes sick or you need to replace them for one reason or another? • Ask the caregivers for proof of citizenship or residency, driver’s license, and insurance if transportation is involved. Keep copies of this documentation. What can a Reputable Home Care Organization provide for you? They hire their own caregivers who are employees of the company • They follow an in depth hiring process covering criminal and vulnerable sector, driver and reference checks, First Aid, CPR and PSW and health care aide certificate verification and finally confirmation of caregiver work history. • Companies are bonded and insured with professional liability and personal property damage insurance policies. • Cover Work Place Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) rules and regulations. • Cover caregivers Canadian Pension Plan (CPP) contributions. • Cover caregivers Employment Insurance (EI) • Cover caregiver Vacation Pay (4%). • Comprehensive Policies and Procedures governing services and client and caregiver relationships and detailed record keeping (communication binders in each home). • Good companies have a code of ethics which they must adhere to. • Good companies have access to a large pool of caregivers to meet the client’s needs – if a caregiver is sick or away on holiday the organization can put another caregiver in their place immediately. • Organizations should be able to provide testimonials or references. • In home assessments and caregiver checks • Some organizations are Accredited http://www.accreditation.ca/ Visit your local community agency, community information centre, hospital or community centre and ask for information on home care agencies.
