The SPARC has organized itself into three working sub-committees to support the district in its efforts to improve both internal and external communications and to develop and nurture parent leadership and involvement. To this end, the SPARC will hold a parent empowerment conference on Saturday, February 6, 2010, beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the district offices located at 2930 Gay Avenue, San Jose, California, 95127. The topics for the event include: 1) How to Better Understand Academic Achievement Data, 2) The importance of Homework and Tips for Parents, 3) How to Effectively Communicate, and 4) Making and Finding time to Get Involved. Principal Norma Rodriguez from Dorsa has been invited as a keynote speaker and Goss Principal Brian Schmaedick and Lyndale Principal Gretchen Dietrich-Wynne will be workshop presenters. Next Beach Cleanup Renaissance community members come out to spend a gorgeous morning cleaning at Sunset Beach. The next beach cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, May 15th. The PTSA is also coordinating the annual Sunset Beach Renaissance Campout at Sunset State Beach from May 14-16. There are limited campsites available so please make arrangements now. In fact, when the class ran out of time to complete a science worksheet, Adrian was the only student from his cohort who followed up with Mr. BenYonatan and made sure he properly completed the assignment. Monica H., 7th grade: Monica is known by her peers to always respect others and show kindness. Over the four years that Mr. Cardenas has known Monica she has consistently been kind. Angelina P., 8th grade: Angelina recommended a new system for organizing the physical science notebook. Thanks to Angelina’s suggestion students will now use a two subject notebook: one section for lab notes and the other section for lecture notes. Great thinking Angelina! P.I.K.E.
