hafen (German: Hochschule Ludwigshafen) is a
public university located in Ludwigshafen, Germany. It was founded in 1965 as the Vocational
School of Commerce Ludwigshafen. In 1971 it
became part of the University of Applied Sciences Rhineland Palatinate, which split up into
seven autonomous universities in 1991. The
university offers bachelor and master degrees
in several areas of business administration and
social welfare.
The East Asia Institute (German: Ostasieninstitut) founded in 1989, as part of the Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences. It
offers a four year or eight semester program
(BA) in International Business Management
combined with either a Chinese, a Japanese or
a Korean country module covering cultural and

them to solve complex and challenging tasks.

a successful leadership position in economic
and administrative fields, focusing on East Asia
as well as the entire global market.

Our bachelor program is divided into three sections. During the first period, students obtain
basic knowledge in various subjects. Outstanding students have the chance to win a scholarship for their mandatory year abroad. The
second period deals with the consolidation of
their newly gained academic knowledge and
includes the year abroad at a partner university
in China, Japan or Korea. The third and last sec-

knowledge. At this point, they will be able to
present innovative solutions and solve problems independently.
Our philosophy is to impart in our students academic knowledge intensively and to fulfill at
the same time their individual needs in order
to achieve a brilliant career after their graduation. Our students shall be socially competent,
open-minded and highly qualified in order
to act successfully in the Asian as well as the
Western business world.
Focus China
Prof. Dr. Siegfried Englert, founder of the East
Asia Institute, early realized the international
demand for graduates with expertise in Business Economics and Chinese language. Focusing only on China at first, he established a study
program named “International Business Management (East Asia)”. His idea proved to be successful and four years later, Japan was added
in 1992 as a new focus for students to choose,
as well as Korea in 2016. Today, the program
focusing on China offers numerous partner universities and institutions with a lively exchange
between German and Chinese lecturers as well
as researchers. Especially the relationship to
our partner province Fujian is very close and
students who enter the Fuzhou University have
good chances to be financially supported by
the government of the province.
Why China?
China, being the world’s biggest national economy, has a strong influence on various industries
and international economics. It is Germany's as
well as the EUs most important trading partner.
Yet, China's economy is constantly changing:
new branches have grown more and more
important, such as IT and RE – areas in which
Chinese companies like Huawei or Lenovo have
come to lead the global market.
However, the study program of the East Asia Institute focuses not only on China's background
and economics but also on its politics and culture.
Besides this, the role and significance of Taiwan
or of the so called „Overseas Chinese“ worldwide is integrated in the program as well.
Therefore, the program has reached regional and global dimensions, offering students to
accomplish their year abroad in China as well
as in Taiwan. Excellent career opportunities in
multinational enterprises await the students
after successfully completing their degree.
Focus Japan
Students of the International Business Management (East Asia) bachelor program have been
able to choose a focus on Japan since 1992.
They receive a profound education in Business
Economics including Marketing, Accounting,
Financing and Political Economics. Additionally,
students take classes in Regional Studies Japan
as well as Japanese language classes. As thirdyear-students, they enter a Japanese university
for one year where they continue their studies,
before completing their studies after one last
year in Ludwigshafen.
The East Asia Institute has numerous partner
universities in East Asia, eleven are located in
Japan including top ranking universities such
as Sophia University in Tokyo. After graduating, our students enjoy great career chances in
global companies or they might continue with
a M.A. program.
Why Japan?
Japan is the world‘s third strongest economy
and is, next to China, Germany‘s most important Asian trading partner. It is home to many
successful and innovative companies in fields
such as the automobile industry, technology,
engineering pharmacy or robotics. Furthermore, Japan's research programs, acknowledged with 25 Nobel Prizes, are outstanding.
Between Japan and Germany, there has been
a long lasting appreciation for each other and
both countries continue their fruitful and amicable relationship for many years. Many Germans are fascinated by the Japanese culture:
Martial Arts like Judo and Karate, as well as art
forms like Anime and Manga enjoy big fan communities in Germany. Our bachelor program
connects this fascination with a solid business
education and prepares the students for a future in international working environments.
Students shall continue to enjoy the aspects of
Japanese culture with a profound knowledge
about the Japanese business world in order to
become internationally successful managers of
the future.
To get in touch with Japanese companies, graduates do not have to search far away. In our
metropolitan area Rhine-Neckar many companies of Japanese origin or companies doing business with Japan are found as close as
Ludwigshafen itself. So their first steps into the
Japanese business world can be done directly
from the doorstep of the East Asia Institute!
Focus Korea
The East Asia Institute offers students the combination of Business Economics, Korean Regional Studies and Korean language classes,
which is truly the only one of its kind in Germany. After graduating, our students enjoy great
career chances in international companies as
well as many opportunities to continue in excellent university M.A. programs.
Why Korea?
South Korea is Asia’s third biggest economy and
its companies can be found in every influential
industry. Companies like Samsung and Hyun
dai are leaders in advanced technology such as
semiconductor technology, mobile communication and battery systems.
South Korea, with one of the largest merchandise exports worldwide, is facing in many aspects similar problems like Germany, especially
in regard to demographic changes or energy
politics. For Koreans, Germany`s experience of
their reunification in 1989 is of very high interest concerning a possible reunification of North
and South Korea.
Korea`s culture is deeply rooted in China and
Japan through long lasting cultural, historical,
economic and political relations. The three
countries have had a strong influence on each
other for centuries. Today there exists a solid
network of trade, direct investments, technol-
ogy transfer as well as tourism and cultural exchange among them.
All three countries face the geopolitical challenge of their imminent neighbor North Korea.
This is one important factor why we teach our
students not only facts related to their study
focus but implement an understanding for the
region of Northeast Asia in general.
Our study program and unique combination of
business modules and regional studies Korea,
as well as a practice-oriented language education in Korean, prepares our students optimally
for the challenges of the Korean, international
and German labor market.
