Gags Can't Silence Smothers Brothers
By Joan Crosby
NEA Entertainment Editor
New York-(NEA) — Tommy Smothers, as Adam, takes
a bite of the apple and a booming voice echoes _. from somewhere up there, "That's a nono."
/
But the CBS censors also
thought the line was a no-no.
"They said it would offend
people in the Bible Belt."
Tommy reports. Tommy and
brother Dick argued, arid CBS
brought in a priest, a minister
and a rabbi to view the skit
and pass judgment. T h e y
thought the line w%s fine. The
censors, reluctantly, gave up
and so it was heard on T h e
Smothers Brothers C o m e d y
Houc.
Censorship, which goes ' on
. all the time, seldom emerges
from behind locked doors. The
major public battle in the past
was Jack Paar vs. NBC with a;
WC in there somewhere. But
the brothers Smothers are mad
„ enough, about the sniping and
sniping that has occurred on
their show to make censorship
a public isstie.
"We mean it.when we. say
we'll "quit" rather~ than '""" g(T
through another season of
this," Tommy said. "We're going to remain strog. I'm tired
find Dickie's
tired and all
this battling.is hurting our per- formances. If we quit, we
stand to be sue.d but if there is
a law suit, it -will be over censorship and I don't think CBS
/• will be.anxious for that."
Tommy admitted t h i n g s
have been better since they returned from a Christmas vacation. "They've brought a new
man in, John Kaye, and he's
younger. They've let a lot of
things by they didn't before
Christmas."
Mike Dann, the CBS programming chief, says, "The
Smothers win 99 per cent of
their points with us."
In the one per cent they
have lost was an exchange
during a Russian song. Dick
was raving about Russian ballet. Tom said how great it was.
Pick: "Bolshoi."
Tom: "No really, they're the
greatest."- _•.:...
"• Somehow it seemS less dangerous to morals than some of
the antics in films like "Never
on Sunday," which was telecast recently.
•
Another time Tommy was .
apologizing for one of' his mistakes:'"God knows I'm sorry,"
he said. "Name dropper,"
Dick said. By the time the
show got on the air, Tom's line
was, "The Deity knows I'm
sorry," and Dick's unchanged
line didn't get a laugh.
Pat Paulsen, • who does some
poHf ed^editorialsToirthe" show;~
had a~ line in one which listed
"white slavery, pornography
jokes are big with the brothers. Recently Tom made a
thumbs down gesture as he
was parising the government
and the censors objected to
that.
The hierarchw of censon

Tankersley, vice preside n t,
Program Practices, located in
New York. Tankersley, offered
a chance to comment on his
' siile of the feud and to state
network standards, absolutely
refused to talk to the press.
Dann says there is no question the Smothers have "broken new frontiers in what can
be done. They do topical comedy and these are serious
times. It's harder to judge
what is tasteful. Sometimes
we're w r o n g and sometimes
they are.".
/
Tommy a d m i 11 e d . the:
brothers can make mistakes.
He wishes now he had been
stopped from doing a skit that,
was on the opening show this
season in which he played' a
young man on a date who got
the tablecloth stuck in his zipper.
Sometimes the brothers censor themselves. An interview
:inthe-SmothersPoll had Dick .talking to Negro actor-SoceyMitchell who, when asked his
name, said, "Charles White.
They used to call me Whitney
but that went out a few months
ago." When it got on the air,
the name had been changed to.
-"George .Wallace—not the one
in politics, the other one."
"We made that change^ The
first line hit too close. But we
had another interview
with
Scoey in which we wanted a
picture of George Wallace on
the wall. Scoey was going to
refer to his brother-in-law an
point to the picture. They"
wouldn't let us do that. So we
used a picture of Adam Clayton Powell. _
"In another skit, Le i g h
French made a reference to a
man cofing home and digging
his wife. They thought that to
dig your wife was dirty, which .
shows the kind of mind we
we have been dealing with." • *
Tommy thinks television is •
at least J.0-years behind- movies, the theater and printed
media in growing up. "If
things go well and other people and shows take stands, it
will take some of the pressure
ottos.'!-..
"They are doing some of the
best stuff on television," Mike
Dann says. "They must be doing something right."
They are not only making,
audiences laugh, and denting
Bonanza's ratings, but they
have proved that even censors
have a sense of humor.
Whenever the censors come
across-what they think—sa id

"We decided to put the word in
one of our scripts and read it
at the first rehearsal."
