GO FAR (Go Out For A Run)
A program to address the childhood obesity crisis
The Rockingham County Partnership for Children (RCPC) is excited to announce the 7th year of GO FAR (Go Out
for a Run) in Rockingham County. We are thrilled to continue our efforts to support children’s health with this
program.
Childhood obesity is a rapidly growing epidemic in America. Here are just a few of the facts:
 In North Carolina, over 30.5% of children are either overweight or obese.
o Over 43% of Rockingham County’s children either overweight or obese,
 Overweight children have a 70-80% chance of becoming overweight or obese adults. Obesity in adulthood is
linked to an increased risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma, sleep apnea, arthritis,
and general poor health.
GO FAR (Go Out For a Run®) is a 10-week running and fitness program developed in 2003 in response to the
growing epidemic of childhood obesity. The GO FAR program combines weekly discussions and activities about
goal setting and good character with the use of physical activity and education on healthy eating to empower
children to make better choices at an early age. The GO FAR 10-week training period will launch in Rockingham
County the week of February 6, 2017.
At the culmination of the GO FAR program, the children will participate in a 5-kilometer (3.1 miles) road race or one
mile fun run. Family members are encouraged to participate. The GO FAR race event on Saturday, April 22, 2017 is
open to the public.
We began the GO FAR program in 2011 with a little over 230 individuals participating in the race with hundreds
more turning out to cheer them on. In 2016 the program grew to over 1200 finishers! We hope to reach more children
and families this year.
Some children’s families cannot afford the $25 participation fee for the program. In order to encourage all interested
children to participate, RCPC seeks sponsors to support GO FAR. Sponsorships support the continuation and
expansion of GO FAR and other childhood obesity prevention initiatives in Rockingham County.
We welcome your participation as a sponsor of GO FAR and a financial supporter of the health and wellness of

contribution by March 31, 2017 in order to be included in race day promotional materials.

Proceeds will ensure the continuation of our childhood obesity efforts in Rockingham County and the growth of the GO FAR program.
