Immanuel Lutheran Church of Lebanon APRIL 2017 The Country Christian Rev. David M. Phillips It is impossible to overemphasize the importance of the resurrection of Jesus. Without it, genuine, orthodox Christian faith does not exist. The New Testament Gospels powerfully proclaim the reality of the bodily resurrection of Jesus. In chapter 15 of his First Letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul presents one of the longest sustained arguments in any of his letters when he addresses the significance and nature of Jesus’ resurrection. He lays out clearly what is at stake “if Christ has not been raised”: our preaching is futile your faith is empty we are false witnesses about God (because we have proclaimed that God did, in fact, raise Jesus from the dead the dead are not (and will not be) raised you are still in your sins those who have ‘fallen asleep’ (i.e., died) in Christ have perished The Gospel accounts tell us that Jesus was raised bodily. In the Gospel of St. Luke, the risen Jesus said to the disciples, “Look at my hands and my feet; it’s me! Touch me and see; a ghost [the Greek word is the common word translated spirit/Spirit] does not have flesh and bones like you see I have.” Then, Jesus asked them for something to eat. They gave him a piece of cooked fish and “he took it and ate it in front of them” (compare John 21.9-14). The risen Jesus had flesh and bones. The risen Jesus ate food. Neither of these can be said of a ghost. In the events of the incarnation of the Son of God, his ‘ministry’, his suffering and death, and his resurrection and ascension, God was (and is) faithful to his covenant promises to his people. In Christ – the incarnate, crucified, risen and ascended Jesus – human sin and rebellion has been dealt with. When, by the power of the Holy Spirit as he opens hearts, minds and ears to God’s word, people are brought to faith in Christ, they affirm that God’s word is true – that in these events God was indeed at work to accomplish his plan. As we continue to prepare for “Holy Week” and its culmination on the Day of Resurrection (Easter Sunday), let us seek the continuing leading of the Holy Spirit to open up God’s word to us, so that when we gather for worship, we are truly prepared, so that we will truly worship God for his great gift to us in Jesus Christ – incarnate, crucified, risen and reigning! With you in Christ, Pastor Phillips Wes’ Corner As I have stated in some previous articles, this year in October we will celebrate the 500th year of the Reformation, with Martin Luther nailing his 95 Thesis on the church door at Wittenberg, Germany. His objection was to how the church was operating at that time, and how he felt that the way they were operating was contrary to the written word recorded in Holy Scripture. The debate that followed changed the world, never to be the same again. There were many Reformers. Pastors, teachers, theologians and people of the word who debated, and depending on where they came from, took the questions that Luther noted, and formed a church different from the Catholic Church of Rome. Luther did not set out to begin a new church. He did not want his name to become a part of a new denomination known as Lutheran. However, that’s what we are because of Martin Luther. He only wanted to point out what was written in the bible be understood by the average people of his time. The church and its writings were in Latin, and average lay people could not read it. So, whatever the church taught, was believed to be true. After studying the bible, Luther took exception to some of the “man made” practices and teachings of the church. Thus came about the Reformation. Pastor has a wonderful series of sermons this Lenten season, and those of you for whatever reason haven’t attended are really missing out. Although to this point, we have had a better attendance this year, than last year. Please consider coming for the final weeks of Lent, it’s never too late. On Grandparents Day, we had a full church for the chapel service that’s held that day. Pastor’s address to all in attendance was meant for everyone who was there. Not all Grandparents are from Immanuel or St Peters. Many belong to other congregations in our area, some may not be Lutheran and there are some who may possibly not even have a church home. However, Pastor did an excellent job of connecting all of us together. The children of the school were the reason they were all there. He explained that regardless of their church background, if they consider themselves followers of Jesus, then we are all brothers and sisters in Christ. He told us about Grace, Word, Faith, and Scripture alone. The “Sola’s “ He explained that we are saved by Grace Alone, through Faith Alone, In Christ Alone. He made everyone feel welcome and thanked them for the support of their grandchildren. The service was run similarly to the school’s chapel services on Wednesday mornings that are held throughout the school year. The children have major parts each Wednesday from reading the lessons, the gospel, the prayers for the church and the sending prayer. The chapel services are open to all members of both congregations each week. More and more adults are coming and enjoying a great worship experience. Please come and learn more about these children on a more personal level than just seeing them when they come to church on Sunday mornings. I think you’ll be glad you did. It’s a great way to begin the day. The Country Christian Page 2 Church Office Information Wes’ Corner—Continued There is a new book out called “Reclaim”, a Lutheran Hymnal for church and home. This book has everything in from Luther’s small catechism, the creeds, hymns, morning and evening prayers, and so much more. Please consider getting one for your home. You won’t be sorry. You can get a copy by calling the church office and putting in an order. We are now in the process of putting together a new church budget for 2017-2018. There are always new needs and concerns to be discussed and prayed over. Keep your church close in heart and mind at all times. Pray for Pastor and your church leaders that they be granted wisdom and be faithful to the church. In Jesus name we pray. Yours in Christ, Wes Kehl Council President UPDATING THE CHURCH WEBSITE I have been working on the Church website the past couple of months. The Country Christian Page 10 Lebanon Lutheran School My favorite holiday is fast approaching; Easter! It is not about the candy, the bunny, or the egg hunt. For me, it is about the feeling I have inside when I am sitting in church and sing "Jesus Christ has Risen Today". It is about the feeling of taking part in communion. It is about the smell of the Easter lilies. It's the feeling of the sun hitting me through the stain glass window as I sit on the pew. And the most important, it is ALL about eternal life. Because of Jesus dying on the cross, defeating Satan, and rising again I will have eternal life in Heaven with Him and our Father. As you sit in church on Easter, think about the meaning of this day. Think about the amazing gift that has been given to you. HE HAS RISEN!!! God’s Blessings , Barb Page 18 Anniversary of the Reformation During this year of the anniversary of the Reformation, each month in our Country Christian, we’ll focus on a hymn written by Martin Luther. From the earliest days of the Church, the singing of hymns has been an integral part of Christian worship. It is a way for all of us to communicate with God using more than just words. Discover how God’s work in Martin Luther’s life has left this legacy of hymns for us to share. Easter In His death on the cross, Christ bound Himself in the chains of sin and death. In His resurrection from the tomb, Christ broke those chains for Himself and for us all. Martin Luther celebrates Christ’s conquest over sin and death in this rousing Easter hymn. The reformer was deeply aware of the spiritual battle won by Christ on that first Easter. Luther was also aware of the ongoing spiritual battle every believer must face. He once felt Satan’s oppressive presence so keenly that he threw an inkpot at him. An ink pot still decorates the wall of is room in Wartburg Castle! Luther believed that singing hymns was one of our best weapons again Satan and his evil forces. He once said, “The devil, the originator of sorrowful anxieties and restless troubles, flees before the sound of music almost as much as before the Word of God.” By celebrating Christ’s victory through song, we can continue to wage war against sin and death and begin to experience Christ’s resurrection in our lives. I pray that eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead.
