KEEPING FAMILIES CLOSE
An Inspirational Beginning
It’s my honor and privilege to serve as the new organizational leader of
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana
(RMHC-CNI). I am a Nebraska native who spent the last 20 years in Kansas
City before relocating to the Chicago area with my husband and two daughters.
As part of the Ronald McDonald House Charities family, I served seven years
as Kansas City’s CEO. I have spent many years traveling to Chicago, and feel
fortunate to be a member of the community. I have been inspired by the stories
within this issue of our newsletter featuring families, volunteers, and supporters
like you who benefit from, and make our mission possible.
RMHC-CNI CEO Holly Buckendahl
We know that children whose families stay at Ronald McDonald Houses around
the world tend to be the sickest, have traveled the furthest distances for care,
and spend the longest time in the hospital. Our Houses allow families to access
the best medical care for their child and being nearby helps children heal and
cope better together. This is how the Bejarano family felt when they learned of
their son Miles’ diagnosis and found themselves needing a Ronald McDonald
House. Research published in Families, Systems, and Health (2013) emphasized
that when families stay together during a child’s hospitalization, important
benefits are available in terms of family experience, psychological well-being and
perceptions of the child’s recovery. For these reasons, we are thankful that we
could be here for Miles and his family, and I hope you are inspired by his story
inside this issue.
We couldn’t do what we do each day without the thousands of volunteers who
assist our team of 42 full time and 38 part time staff to ensure that families of
critically ill children have a home cooked meal, a comfortable room to sleep in,
and a shoulder to lean on. I can’t wait for you to meet Maya Green, a volunteer
who you will read more about, that has been critical to our mission for the past
14 years. Maya, like all of our volunteers, offers hope when it’s needed most.
On behalf of the board, staff, and families, I’d like to thank Chairman of the
Board Bill Budig for his six years of service on the board, and past two as Board
Chairman. Bill’s leadership, generosity, and passion for the mission has been
evident in all that we have accomplished together to support families. He will
forever be a heartfelt friend of the charity, and we look forward to his continued
leadership as Chairman Emeritus in 2016.
As we enter the holiday season, please remember the families served by
RMHC-CNI by giving generously, making a home-cooked meal at one of our
Houses, collecting items off our wish list, or simply finding your own personal
way to provide support. Thank you for helping provide stability and resources for
these families during incredibly difficult times — it means the world to them.

Family Story
The Bejarano Family
Roxanne and Angel Bejarano first
became acquainted with RMHC-CNI
and its housing programs when their
son Miles was first diagnosed with
dilated cardiomyopathy in 2013.
His heart condition was found by
accident, as he did not exhibit the
normal symptoms of someone with
heart problems.
At three months old, father Angel
was alarmed to see that his son
Miles was not breathing normally
after only one minute of tummy time.
Roxanne called the paramedics,
who arrived and took him to Ann &
Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital
for observation. After several hours
of waiting in the hospital, a resident
requested a chest x-ray. Later, an
echocardiogram and EKG were
performed. All tests indicated
that Miles was in heart failure and
needed a heart transplant. “We were
shocked that his heart was working
at 11 percent. “All the doctors were
amazed because Miles was not
acting like a baby in heart failure,”
Roxanne said.
His official diagnosis was dilated
cardiomyopathy, a disease of the
heart muscle, usually starting in the
heart's main pumping chamber
(his left ventricle was enlarged).
The ventricle stretches and thins
(dilates) and can't pump blood as
well as a healthy heart can.
After 32 days of waiting, the
family was told that a heart was
available and the surgery was
performed successfully. The
nurses were so happy with the
outcome that they referred to
Miles as a “Rockstar”. During this
time, the Bejarano family stayed
at the Ronald McDonald Sleep
Rooms inside Lurie Children’s.
“Staying there was amazing and
we are truly thankful for all the
help we received from our social
worker to help make this process
easier,” Roxanne said.
After the transplant was complete,
the family stayed at the Ronald
McDonald House near Lurie
Children’s on the House’s transplant
floor. “It was great because our
family was able come and stay with
us,” Roxanne said. “Our family
was overwhelmed by everything
the House provided and they were
very accommodating and provided
everything we needed,” she said.
Three Easy Ways to Leave a Lasting Legacy
Did you know?
Planned giving is critical to the long-term success of any charitable
organization and if you have a will, a retirement account or life
insurance, you may use these estate planning tools to support Ronald
McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana after
your lifetime.
• Will/Living Trust: To offer support without giving up assets today,
you may include RMHC-CNI in a will or living trust and leave a
specific asset, dollar amount or percentage of your estate to
the Charity.
• Retirement Account: Name RMHC-CNI as the beneficiary of your
retirement account and receive an estate tax charitable deduction.
• Life Insurance Policy: Name RMHC-CNI as a beneficiary of a
percentage of an existing life insurance policy’s death benefit.
For more detailed information on how you can include RMHC-CNI
in your individual estate plan, please contact Kathleen Smith at
630.623.3672 or [email protected]. You can also visit our planned
giving website at www.rmhccni.org/plannedgiving.

Miles,
who will turn two years old in
November, is doing very well while
adjusting to his medication.
Roxanne has continued her
association with RMHC-CNI
by becoming a volunteer at the
Ronald McDonald House near Lurie
Children’s, spending her time on the
transplant floors twice a month. “It’s
important to give back,” she said.

In Loving Memory
Dedication
to a Beloved
Colleague
and Friend
RMHC-CNI was saddened to learn of the passing of a beloved past friend,
colleague and team member, Jamie Haberkorn, in July 2015. Jamie was
a strong leader and a driving force behind the establishment of the Ronald
McDonald House near Lurie Children’s, serving as its first House Director.
She was particularly committed to the installation of the bricolage on the
rooftop oasis, many times staying late to help the Green Star team install the
individual mosaics in the bricolage.
Volunteers, partners and board members recently joined Jamie Haberkorn' s
family on the rooftop oasis for a celebration of her life and the dedication of
the bricolage in her name.
If you knew Jamie and would like to make a memorial donation in her
memory, you can log on to https://support.rmhccni.org/JamieHaberkorn.

Prince Industries
We are excited to announce Prince Industries, Inc. as our new Caring Partner. Prince
Industries is the premier designer, engineer and manufacturer of precision machined
and sheet metal fabricated components. After attending the open house for Ronald
McDonald House near Central DuPage Hospital (CDH), Prince Industries generously
sponsored the library nook at the newest Ronald McDonald House near Central DuPage
Hospital. President and CEO Mark Miller said “I couldn’t help but notice what a blessing
the Ronald McDonald House must be to families going through the difficulties of caring
for their sick children.” In September, Prince Industries cooked a delicious, homecooked meal for the families staying together at the House near CDH. We couldn’t exist
without the generosity of companies like Prince Industries.

29th Annual Golf Classic
On Wednesday, July 15th, we celebrated our 29th Annual Golf Classic, hosting over
400 golfers for a wonderful day at Cog Hill Golf & Country Club in Lemont, IL. Ryan
Baker (CBS-2), Ronald McDonald, and our dedicated committee helped welcome our
golfers where they enjoyed 18 holes of golf, exciting contests, delicious food, and a
one-of-a-kind auction. This year’s tournament helped raise $250,000 and we are so
thankful to all our great supporters.
Have A Heart Campaign
Thanks to Great Clips for organizing their “Have A Heart” Campaign again this
summer. Over 155 salons across the Chicagoland area participated in the campaign,
bringing great awareness about the charity while raising $40,000 of much-needed
funds for our critical programs. We are truly grateful for Great Clips continued
dedication and support over the past ten years to RMHC-CNI. To find the closest
salon location visit GreatClips.com.

Celebrating three years at our new location
On June 26, The Ronald McDonald House near Lurie Children’s
officially celebrated three years at our location on Grand
Avenue. Thanks to our friends at Berkshire Hathaway Koenig
Rubloff, families were treated to an extraordinary night of crafts,
entertainment, a games tournament, a piñata, prizes and gifts.
Over 100 participants enjoyed a “Meals from the Heart” dinner
provided and served by a "LEO Loves" team from Leo Burnett.
We are grateful to our great partners like Berkshire Hathaway
and Leo Burnett who have prepared and served thousands of
meals and organized hundreds of activities for our families over
the past three years. Since our opening, we have been honored
to host over 60,000 room nights, providing care, comfort and
compassion to the families of hospitalized children.

Olympian Visit
After becoming an active
ambassador for RMHC-CNI,
Olympic women's ice hockey silver
medalist Kendall Coyne decided to
bring together local Chicagoland
Olympians to host an activity at
Ronald McDonald House near
Lurie Children’s.
Thank you to our new Olympic
friends — Emery Lehman,
Carol Brown, Brody Roybal,
Cappie Pondexter and Courtney
Vandersloot — for joining Kendall
in putting gold medal smiles on all
of our families!
Alice Finerman & Elaine Penk
Alice and Elaine are more than just
coworkers at the Ronald McDonald
House near Lurie Children’s — they
are best friends.
As volunteer Family Ambassadors,
this dynamic duo always greets our
families with kindness and smiles.
They began their volunteering
journey in 2012 when they attended
the very first orientation class before
we opened our doors on June 26,
2012.
There is nothing this duo
can’t tackle together, always
exemplifying what it means to be
a stellar volunteer. Alice and Elaine
love helping others and continue to
serve our families with so much joy
and happiness that you can’t help
but smile when you see them.
We are very fortunate to have such
devoted volunteers who are vital
members of the RMHC-CNI team.

On July 29, Kendall invited five
additional Olympians, representing
hockey, sledge hockey, basketball,
rowing and speed skating to
attend the House with her. Families
were able to decorate cookies in

many sports featured at the games
and had the opportunity to wear
an Olympic medal.

The Andersen Twins
Conner and Cooper Andersen were born premature at 31 weeks and spent a
total of 100 days in the NICU at Central DuPage Hospital (CDH). After spending
four days at home, complications arose and they were both readmitted into the
NICU. Fortunately, for Ashlie and Joe Andersen the House near CDH had just
opened and they immediately checked in.
Staying at the House saved them countless hours of driving time to and from the
hospital and allowed them to spend more time with their babies.
“I spent almost seven weeks there after my boys were admitted back and forth
to the hospital and it truly helped during a difficult time in my family’s life,” Ashlie
said. “It became my second home. Thank you to all the staff, volunteers and
families at the Ronald McDonald House for becoming part of our life,” Ashlie said.
Ashlie and the whole family are truly a part of our Ronald McDonald House family.
Ashlie is now a member of our Community Council and recently brought her
dance studio, State Street Dance Studio, to our House for a performance and
dance party for the families.
Volunteers
Julie Clarkson
Sharon and Rob Sampson
Sharon and husband Rob, both retired
and longtime residents of Wheaton,
began volunteering back in December
before the house was furnished and
have been with us ever since.
You will find them volunteering at
the House every second and fourth
Wednesday of the month, assisting
with various tasks.
In addition to volunteering at the
House, they also volunteer at the
hospital gift shop, are Auxiliary Board
Members at the hospital, and recently
joined our Community Council for
our House.
“Volunteering is very important to me.
I believe if you live in a community,
you give back to that community,”
Sharon said.

Julie Clarkson began providing a
monthly Sunday meal when we
first opened in January. She is a
graduate of the Culinary Institute
of America in New York and is
currently the Senior Research Chef
for an international manufacturer
of flavors used in the food and
beverage industry. She has cooked
at Houses in Atlanta, Indianapolis,
and now in suburban Chicago.
“Cooking for others brings me
such joy and happiness. I’m so
happy to provide a hot meal that
brings the families comfort. They
have so much to deal with, a hot
meal should not be one of them,”
Julie said.

it is her family that works hard to

Tudy’s mother Doris was a volunteer
at the Ronald McDonald House in
Indianapolis for 25 years, and the
charity held a special place in her
heart. This was passed on to Tudy,
who for the last three years has carried
on her mother’s work by volunteering
at the House near Loyola.
Friday mornings, twice a month,
Tudy comes in to clean, stock, and
organize the kitchen to make it sparkle
for the families and get it ready for
the weekend. This has been a huge
help to the House, especially over the
course of our “In Bloom” renovation
that saw our kitchen completely
updated and improved. Keeping the
new kitchen clean highlights how nice
it is, both for the families staying and
the “Meals from the Heart” groups
coming to cook.
