OVERSEAS TRAVEL OUTCOME REPORT - MINISTER BIGNELL
DEPARTURE DATE: 10 December 2016
RETURN DATE: 12 December 2016
DESTINATIONS: CHINA (GUANGZHOU)
The objective to join the inaugural China Southern Airlines flight from Guangzhou to Adelaide,
accompanying the airline President and Senior Executives and representing the South
Australian Government at official departure formalities in Guangzhou.
China is South Australia's most valuable international tourism market, and the Australia-China
Year of Tourism 2017, along with the newly launched direct flights from Guangzhou to
Adelaide, will provide a significant boost to our visitor economy. In addition, our food and wine
exporters will benefit from the new direct air service to mainland China.
The visit to Guangzhou was also an opportunity to build and further develop key relationships
with government and business associations, and to promote South Australia's credentials as
a producer of premium food and wine and as a fantastic place to holiday, study and do
business.
I was accompanied by Ms Lucy Anderson, Food, Wine and Tourism Adviser, for the duration
of the visit.
China Southern Airlines commenced its three weekly A330-200 service into Adelaide from
Guangzhou on Monday, 12 December 2016. This new service offers 216 seats (4 first class;
24 business class; 188 economy class) and flights will depart Guangzhou every Monday,
Wednesday and Saturday at 22:00 and arrive in Adelaide the next day at 9:30am with a flight
time of 9 hours. The flights depart Adelaide on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday at 11 :OOam
and arrive in Guangzhou on the same day at 5:40pm (local time) with a flight time of
nine hours and 10 minutes.
38,000 Chinese visitors travelled to South Australia during the past year and they added $240
million into the State's visitor economy, representing an increase of 31 per cent on the year
before. These numbers are forecast to grow as a result of the new direct service offered by
China Southern Airlines. This new service will also create 135 local jobs and benefit hotels,
restaurants and tourism operators across South Australia.
In addition, food and wine exports from South Australia to China are valued at $550 million,
and direct air services present a new opportunity for exports of perishable goods including
fresh fruit, vegetables and seafood.
During the visit to Guangzhou I met with Mr Wang Changshun, Chairman, and Mr Tan
Wangeng, President and CEO, China Southern Airlines, for official departure formalities prior
to the inaugural flight. Both Mr Wang and Mr Tan expressed their extreme gratitude to the
South Australian Government for their partnership with China Southern Airlines and for our
commitment to support the airline's inaugural flight. I expressed my sincere thanks to them,
on behalf of the South Australian Government, for selecting Adelaide as their sixth destination
in Australia.
During the visit to Guangzhou, I also took the opportunity to meet with:
•
Mr Guo Jian Ye, Director General, Commercial Steering Committee, China Southern
Airlines, to discuss inbound and outbound flight load forecasts for the next six months.
OVERSEAS TRAVEL OUTCOME REPORT - MINISTER BIGNELL
Both are forecast at 90 percent or higher until March 2017. We discussed the potential
to increase capacity from a three weekly service to five weekly service by the end of
2017. Mr Guo also enquired about wine education and I invited China Southern Airlines
to engage with the Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA) who would
be able to facilitate staff training to support on-board wine service.
•
Mr Zhao Fengsheng, Senior Vice President Cargo, Cargo Department, China Southern
Airlines, who hosted a tour of China Southern Airlines Cargo facilities. AirLog, a
subsidiary of China Southern Airlines, manages the 47, OOOsqm international cargo
terminal which includes 200 sqm of cold storage and transfers 70,000 tons through
their cold chain service each year.
•
Mr Jin Wei Cheng, Deputy Director General, Guangzhou Entry-Exit Inspection and
Quarantine Bureau (CIQ), and nine of his colleagues holding various executive
positions within the CIQ. I discussed the import and quarantine inspection process for
South Australian producers and the need for traceability of products to ensure quality
control. Mr Jin was supportive of our bio-security measures, including fruit-fly free
status, Pest Free Areas (PFA) and the moratorium on growing genetically modified
food crops.
•
Mr William Han, Chairman, White Horse Global Holdings, to explore the company's
interest in South Australia and understand White Horse business operations in China.
•
Mr Gordon & Daisy Woo, Mr Woo is President, Goelia, to discuss his fashion business
and investment on Kangaroo Island.
•
Mr Dominic Trindade, Australian Consul General Guangzhou, to discuss the
Guangdong market (largest province; 108 million people; highest GDP; 25-30% of
China's trade is through Guangdong Province) with respect to government to
government engagement, tourism, agriculture, food and wine trade. Guangzhou is
China's third largest city and differs from northern China in terms of culture, language
and business dealings (more privately owned business compared to State owned
enterprise in northern China). I discussed the anticipated trade and tourism benefits
expected to result from the launch of China Southern Airline's direct flights from
Guangzhou to Adelaide, and the opportunity to partner with Guangzhou based sports
teams (AFL and soccer), as well as students, to promote South Australia. I advised
the Consul General of the South Australian trade mission scheduled to travel to
Guangzhou in May 2017 and he offered his support for the mission.
In addition to the above meetings in Guangzhou, I addressed the media at the press
conference on arrival of the inaugural flight into Adelaide on the morning of Tuesday,
13 December 2016.
Initial feedback from South Australian tourism operators and exporters indicates strong near
term opportunities, particularly for centrally based hotels and restaurants, as well as seafood,
fruit and vegetable producers, exporting to China.
