Reaches Blood Donation
Milestone of 25 Gallons
Master Shipbuilder Ernie Koehler (O45) reached a milestone on Aug. 18 for donating 25 gallons of
blood to The American Red Cross bloodmobile at Newport News Shipbuilding.
Koehler, who has been recognized by the Facilities and Waterfront Support Division for frequently
donating blood to NNS’ bloodmobile said, “What motivates me to give blood is that I know that
every pint can potentially help several people because my blood type is unique,” said Koehler. “I’ve
done this for so many years and I will keep doing it as long as I can.”
The American Red Cross’ bloodmobile visits NNS 48 times a year in various locations around the
shipyard. To view the bloodmobile schedule, visit the K18 Corporate Citzenship and Government
Relations website. For questions, contact Judy Fundak (K18) at 380-3011.
Career Pathways Hosts Students from “Ready 2 Work” Program
Career Pathways hosted students from the nonprofit organizations, VersAbility and Boys and Girls
Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula, at The Apprentice School July 15. During the visit, volunteers
from Radiological Control, Lab Services and Research and Development gave presentations about
ongoing shipyard projects and Career Pathways led a duct tape boat-building activity.

Donations Needed to Support
The American Red Cross for
Louisiana Flood Relief
The devastating flooding in Louisiana has forced
thousands of people from their homes with just
the few things they could take with them.
The American Red Cross is providing food,
shelter and relief supplies to those affected, but
they need help. Ingalls Shipbuilding is on the
Gulf Coast and some employees, their families
and friends may be affected.
Please consider a donation to general disaster
relief right now at the Huntington Ingalls

NNS Engages Suppliers on Transition to Digital Shipbuilding
Environment
More than 75 suppliers attended a joint meeting hosted by Newport News Shipbuilding and the
Marine Machinery Association (MMA) at VASCIC Aug. 9. The purpose of the meeting was to give
suppliers insight into how the company is transitioning to a digital shipbuilding environment and to
start dialogue on how NNS could implement the same concepts with its supply chain. The full-day
meeting consisted of a series of presentations, demonstrations and panel discussions regarding
digital shipbuilding concepts and initiatives.
Engineering Planning Analyst Brett Cash (E45) was one of the presenters during the meeting.
“Many of the challenges our craftsmen face here at Newport News Shipbuilding are similar to the
challenges you face as shipbuilding suppliers,” Cash said. “If the mission of digital shipbuilding
inside the gate is to improve the way we put 10,000 shipbuilders to work, then digital shipbuilding
outside the gate is to improve the way we interface with the more than 2,000 suppliers we work
with across the country.”
To provide suppliers with specific details about each product, NNS representatives manned 10
demonstrations, each featuring a major digital shipbuilding initiative. The suppliers were given two
hours to rotate and visit each demo.
“The feedback we have received since the meeting has been very positive,” said
Ray Montgomery, director of Technical and Material Engineering. “The MMA chairman of the
board was very impressed. Most of the suppliers I spoke to were interested in working with us to
improve the efficiency of our interactions.”

CONTINUED FROM PG 1
“Partnering with VersAbility and the Boys and
Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula’s ‘Ready
2 Work’ Program allowed us to showcase our
Apprentice School and highlight the great work
that happens at Newport News Shipbuilding to at
risk high school juniors and seniors,” said
Ron Murray vice president of Quality. “This
is our second year supporting this important
initiative, and Career Pathways has done a
fantastic job of coordinating the event for us, and
of course those that volunteered their time made
it truly special for the kids.”
VersAbility has been employing individuals
with disabilities in Hampton Raods for more
than 60 years. Since 2014, NNS has continued
contracting with the agency to produce pipe
discs for submarines and aircraft carriers.
NNS 2016 School Tools
Drive Concluded
In support of this year’s School Tools Drive, NNS’ senior staff teamed up to purchase 170 backpacks and
80 scientific calculators for local students. Photo by John Whalen

recognition of the 1,000th call to the 8-Look system. Photo by Chris Oxley
8-Look Receives 1,000th Call
In July, the Manufacturing Division’s 8-Look phone system received its 1,000th call since the
automated line first began operating in 2014. The purpose of 8-Look is for Manufacturing employees
to report safety issues and concerns.
“I’ve had really good success each time I call,” said 8-Look’s 1,000th caller X18 Foreman
Austin Glover. “When you call 8-Look, you are required to answer a few questions and someone
usually gets back with you in a day or so to let you know they are looking into the issue. Most of the
time the issue gets resolved quickly.”
When employees call 8-Look, all safety issues and concerns are looked into. If the caller has selected
not to be anonymous, they will receive an initial response within 24 hours, and also a follow-up
response as to how the issue was resolved. Over the past two years, the Manufacturing team has
worked to reduce the response time by 45 percent. One of the ways the team has accomplished this is
by keeping the safety supplies frequently needed to resolve safety issues on hand.
“The quick response time by the team shows our employees that the division is committed to safety
and is working to create an injury-free workplace,” said Manufacturing Safety Lead Bob Conway.
Currently, the 8-Look system is being implemented by other divisions with a goal of having the
system implemented yard-wide by the first quarter of 2017. To learn more about the 8-Look call
system, contact Bob Conway at 380-2337.
