The Jungle (1906) Sinclair's exposé of the American meat packing industry, which he wrote after
working undercover in Chicago. The book caused an uproar and led to the 1906 Pure Food and
Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act. He wrote about the difficult working conditions and
portrayed the meat packing industries as unsanitary, contributing to a public outcry. Sinclair
famously said of the public reaction "I aimed at the public's heart, and by accident I hit it in the
stomach." The book is very much a portrayal of working class poverty, the lack of social supports,
unpleasant working conditions, and the hopelessness among many workers. Jack London called it
"the Uncle Tom's Cabin of wage slavery."
