National Songbook
Everlasting Melodies was originally published in 2004 as a songbook featuring a collection
of songs from Theta Phi Alpha’s history and present. A special thank you to past National
Songchairman Cathy Billoni for the creation of Everlasting Melodies! Since that time,
Everlasting Melodies has also added a song CD with several songs in the CD from the
songbook. As we look to our centennial celebration let us remember that Theta Phi Alpha is
a singing Fraternity, please share your local songs and songs created for special events
such as recruitment and Unity Week so that all chapters can enjoy! Singing is one of the
ties that bonds Theta Phi Alpha’s and links each of us to women we may never have met.
The power of singing can reach our sisters North, South, East and West. A particular song
can have special meaning to us whether it was watching a skit during recruitment or singing
at a special event. Please enjoy the songbook and be sure to use the song CD as a tool to
aid in the instruction of Sisters and Pledge Sisters so that chapters everywhere can be
joined together in song!

Traditional Fraternity Songs
In 1995, nineteen songs were chosen for inclusion in the newest edition of the Pledge Sister’s Handbook.
These nineteen songs include the special songs that are sung during Fraternity rituals, traditional
favorites, and songs that date back as early as the 1930s. As we sing these songs today, we join our
voices with those of the generations of sisters who came before us as well as share the verses with the
sisters who will carry the Fraternity into the future.
WHITE ROSE
THETA PHI CHEER
This ritual song, first published in the fourth edition of the
National Songbook (1962), may have first appeared in rituals
in the 1940's.
The Alpha Beta Chapter wrote this cheer for the fifth
National Songbook (1986).

won the Song Award at the National Convention in 1992. It

The Beta Chapter submitted this song for the 1933 National
Songbook. It is thought to be the first song written by this
chapter. It is widely sung today. Sung to the tune of
Clementine.
Mari Ann Callais and Leslie Ervin Trahant, Alpha Beta
Chapter alumnae, wrote this song in 1993.

Recruitment Songs
We all start out in Theta Phi in some form of recruitment process, whether it is a personal invitation to get
involved by a collegian or alumna from a chapter, or a large rush/ recruitment party complete with songs
and skits. Although recruitment varies with every chapter and every campus, these songs serve to
connect all of us as Theta Phi Alpha sisters, wherever we may be. Some of these songs have notations
due to our new terminology of recruitment instead of rush.

Share your favorite songs!
There are many options for submissions:
VIA INTERNET: Submit your songs as part of an e-mail document and address it to [email protected],
where it will be forwarded to the National Song Chairman. Please place in title bar “ TPA SONG SUBMISSION” . .
The email should include song tilte, song lyrics, sheet music (if possible) and an audio of the song. Audio can be sent
in a mp3 or cd to the office.

IN THE MAIL: Submit your songs by sending in the mail to the National Office. Include a copy of the lyrics(typed),
sheet music (if possible) and a CD or USB Thumb Drive. Please send your submission in a padded envelope. Please
note that CD’s or USB Thumb Drives will not be returned.
There are specific guidelines, written in 1992 and revised periodically over the past few years that must be kept in
mind as you write and submit your songs for publication in the National Songbook.:

Song-Writing Guidelines
1.
Lyrics should focus on Theta Phi Alpha and its ideals (for example, friendship, sisterhood,
etc.). Avoid references to other campus organizations or persons, especially ones that may be
considered negative or insulting. No songs should include references to alcohol use, sexual
activities, or other inappropriate acts.
2.
Words and terms should be used correctly - refer to the Glossary in the Chapter Operations
Manual or Pledge Sister's Handbook (note especially the proper usage of "pledge sister,"
"alumna" or "alumnae," and "collegian." Be careful to avoid use of slang or inappropriate
words or phrases, such as obscenities or vulgarities.
3.
Songs submitted for inclusion in Theta Phi Alpha's Songbook should be sent to National Office
with the following:
a. typed lyrics;
b. isheet music (if possible);
c. if the tune of a popular song is used, please reference the song title and artist;
d. include a CD or MP3 of the song
e. include your chapter, colony, or association name, name(s) of the songwriters, and the
date written
4.
Any questions should be referred to the National Song Chairman.
