93132...40%
And a reminder that this
league will be off for the next
2 weeks for the Holidays.
Let’s get to the action for
week 11. The Eagles soared
as Clark Lewison popped off
5 wins and the trio of Ron
Johnson, Jerry Somervold
and Cliff Diverell each won 4
games in route to a 20-5 win
over Leos 2 at Leo’s Sports
Bar and Grill. The other table
at Leo’s was the scene as
Travis Taggart pounded out 5
wins and lead his Leo’s 1
teammates over Bunyans 2
in a 17-8 victory. Dave Kezar
assisted Leo’s 1 with a 4-1
night as did Jamie Erickson
for the Bunyans Bombers. I
was the sub dejour and
watched Leo’s 3 trek to the
Char Bar for a 9 ball lesson.
Bill Willroth and Grant
Somervold each posted 4
wins to vault the Char 1
team to a 16-9 spanking of
Leo’s 3. Whimps 2 was also a
16-9 winner over the Varsity.
But I have no score sheet, so
I can not give any high lights.
The Pressbox nailed down a
15-10 win over Maya Janes 3
as Chad scored 5 wins for the
Boxers. Mastero notched 4
wins for Maya Janes 3.
In a battle of top flight
teams at Maya Janes,
Whimps1 came out on top to
the tune of 15-10. Rob banged
out 5 wins with Buzz adding
4 wins and a couple of tunes
on the mouth harp for
Whimps 1. On Maya Janes
third table the men of Char 2
bested Maya Janes 1 by a 1411 score. Trevor scored 4 wins
for Maya Janes 1 with four
members of the Char 2 team
winning by the score of 3-2.
Leo’s 4 was on the road to
the west side of town to face
Bunyans 1 in the closest
match of the night. Leo’s 4
came out on top 13-12. Jeff
was the lone 4 game winner
for Bunyans and Leo’s 4 had
a trio of 3-2 winners in a very
spirited match.
Well, that’s all until after
the New Year, so I wish all of
you a Happy Holiday season
and remind you to be very
careful on the roads. Bye-bye
from the felt surface.
Thanks, MOJO
A new milestone: three Third Degree Black Belts in one year
Would you like to see students of all ages excited about
learning new skills? Then drop
by the Vermillion Taekwondo
Black Belt Academy, where
students demonstrate discipline and determination, while
having fun learning martial
arts.
Jon Trefz, certified instructor with the American Taekwondo Association (ATA) and
fifth degree black belt, recalls
many great students and
thrilling milestones throughout his 25+ year career. However, says Trefz, “This year
marks a very special accomplishment.”
The new milestone to which
he refers, is awarding three of
his students – Dylan Daniels
(13), Elly Miiller (14), and
Janelle Solberg (14) — the distinction of “Third Degree Black
Belt,” all in the same year.
Both Solberg and Miiller,
who tested for their new rank
in September, wowed the audience as they executed their
82-move form with strong technique, demonstrating balance
and power. Guest judge and
fifth degree black belt, Harlan
Hubers of Orange City, IA,
commented on the amount of
control and focus shown by the
girls during their exciting sparring demonstration. As a finale, Miiller performed two
board breaks featuring a step
spin hook-kick leading into a
running jump side-kick, as she
flew through the air over multiple obstacles.
Solberg executed a hammer
fist and beautiful jump ax kick.
The audience cheered at the
sound of snapping boards.

Featured in this photo are Jon Trefz and his students at the Vermillion Taekwondo Black
Belt Academy. Three of his students – Dylan Daniels (13), Elly Miiller (14), and Janelle Solberg
(14) – have all earned the distinction of “Third Degree Black Belt” this year.
As their new rank was presented Trefz noted,“These students have been real leaders in
my school. I am really proud of
what they have accomplished
and I have enjoyed teaching
them and watching them grow
in their abilities.”
Dylan Daniels, who has previously held the honor of being
the ATA South Dakota State
Champion in Forms, Weapons,
and Sparring for her age group,
is the youngest student that
Trefz has ever had achieve this
accomplishment, as she earned
this honor in March 2008.
Daniels started taking classes
in the introductory Park and
Rec program when she was
just 4 years old.
Trefz said, “I knew right
away that she would become a
black belt – she was so into it.
Dylan is one of the most committed students I have ever
had in my school.”
In the ATA, students first
progress through a series of
nine colored belts to achieve
the status of First Degree
Black Belt. During this progression they study forms (a
combination of offensive and
defensive techniques), sparring, one steps (scripted sparring segments), self-defense,
and board breaks, while learning important life skills.
Then, in the Black Belt Se-
ries, which also includes the
possibility of nine degrees, students continue to hone basic
skills and techniques, while
adding more advanced levels of
forms, sparring, and board
breaks. Additionally, students
execute their abilities to use
weapons, joint lock self-defense
strategies, and leadership skills
during a number of midterms
and rank testings.
“Achieving a Third Degree
Black Belt takes a great deal
perseverance,” said Trefz, as
he explains that up until 2008,
he can count the number of his
students who have achieved
this rank accomplishment on
one hand.
The University of South
Dakota’s Tyler Cain had 24
points and a career-high 17 rebounds to lead the Coyote
men’s basketball team to a 7856 victory over Minnesota-Duluth on Friday night at the
DakotaDome in Vermillion.
USD improved to 6-5 overall
with the win while UMD falls
to 8-5 overall. The Coyotes finished the game shooting 46.7
percent from the field while
holding the Bulldogs to 33.3
percent from the field including
29.6 percent from the field in
the first half.
Cain (Rochester, MN) went
11-for-13 from the field on his
way to his fourth double-double of 2008-09. He also tied
with a season-high four blocks
while also adding four steals. In
addition to Cain, USD had
three other players score in
double-figures as Louie Krogman (Fr., White River) had 18
points, Dylan Grimsley (Sr.,
Sioux City, IA) had 15 and
Jesse Becker (Sr., Plymouth,
MN) added 10. The Coyotes’
defense and balance proved to
be the difference Friday. USD
held the Bulldogs to just 23
first-half points, which was the
second lowest total the Coyotes have allowed to an opponent in the first half this
season.
Meanwhile, the Coyote offense was efficient in the first
half, going 14-of-27 from the
field (51.9 percent). Five Coyote players scored six points
or more in the first half, led by
Krogman with 10 points and
Grimsley and Cain with eight
each. The game started off going back and forth but the Coyotes put together a 5-0 run
together to gain a nine-point
lead at the 14-minute mark.
USD then gained its largest
lead of the first half with 4:41
remaining in the first half as
Steve Smith (Sr., Sioux Falls,
S.D.) hit a lay-up to put South
Dakota up 34-17.
USD led by as many as 24
in the second half. Smith added
eight points and five rebounds
for USD. Grimsley had two
blocks and also went 10-of-13
from the free-throw line. USD
had a big advantage from
three-point range, hitting 7-of20 attempts compared to 1-of8 for the Bulldogs.
Foul trouble spoils Tanagers’ strong start Tanager gymnasts
Sports Writer
Just when they got off to
their best start of the young
season, the Vermillion girls
basketball team found itself
in foul trouble at Madison
on Dec. 22. The Tanagers
did their best and hardest to
fight back, but in the end
they lost a 68-51 decision
to the Bulldogs to drop to
0-2 overall as well as in Big
8 Conference play.
“That changed our rotations and the full-court
pressure defense we wanted
to play,” observed Coach
Jamie Parish.
The Tanagers had a 12point lead twice during the
first quarter as six different players dented the scoring column. But Madison
went from an 18-6 deficit
with a 22-3 run to take a
28-21 lead late in the second
period. Val Robinson, who
contributed quality minutes
THE

off the bench, sank a threepointer with 1:25 till halftime,
and
Hannah
Nehlich-Arobba converted
a layup to lift Vermillion
back to within two points.
It was 30-26 for Madison
at the intermission, and in
the third period the Bulldogs
pulled away on the strength
of long-distance shooting.
Much of it came from Kaitlyn Higgins, who posted 11 of
her game-high 17 points in
the second half. Brianna
Postma had 10 of her 12
points in the second half to
swell the Bulldog barrage.
Vermillion’s Sierra Allen
led her team in scoring with
10 and in rebounding with
eight. Hannah and Sophie
Nehlich-Arroba had nine
points apiece, Robinson
seven, Sara Kjose six, Kayla
Munger four, and Ashley
Ouellette and Lexi Regnerus
three each.
Christa Paul scored 16
MOST
COMPREHENSIVE
and Mikayla McNary 10 to
give Madison a total of four
players in double-figure scoring. The Bulldogs posted a
42-22 rebounding advantage.
“As a group we need to
start shooting the ball at a
higher percentage,” said
Parish, whose girls made 19
of 66 field-goal attempts for
28.8 percent shooting while
Madison was warm at 46.3
percent. “We need to be more
aware of our teammates and
help each other score instead
of just looking for our own
shots.”
Two games at the Crofton
holiday tournament earlier
this week will lead to a pair
of home games early in the
new year. The Tanagers will
host Sioux City East Tuesday night, Jan. 6, and be
home against Parkston in a
girls’-boys’ doubleheader Friday, Jan. 9.
