I read CARE’s position description for the Dentist vacancy (position #111111) with the mobile
clinical team in Bolivia with great interest. As a dentist trained at UCSF, with significant surgical
experience, CARE’s program to provide reconstructive dental care to pediatric and adult patients
greatly appeals to me professionally and personally.
In my five years of clinical practice, I have provided comprehensive dental care in an ambulatory
setting for pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients. Additionally, my clinical experience encompasses
several of the surgical procedures stated in the position description, including open/closed
reductions of mandibular fractures in OR, periodontal surgery, open debridement, intraosseous,
dental implants, third molar partial/full bony impactions, third molar extractions under IV sedation,
tori reduction/tuberosity reduction/ distal wedge, intermaxillary fixation, and extraoral suturing of
lacerations.
I developed these skills both through the International Dentistry Program at UCSF, and as an
Associate Dental Surgeon for three years at the National Dental Hospital in Mumbai, India. The
opportunity to observe and work next to highly-trained clinicians who balanced their technical skills
with an artistic sensibility for aesthetics, developed my own approach and philosophy to excellent
dental care.
But is it my personal experience, as a child with a cleft lip whose life was profoundly altered by the
skill and care of a dentist, which inspires my application for this position. I am personally aware of
the life altering experience of quality dental care, both mentally and physically. I became a dentist to
help others maintain and improve their oral health, quality of life, and appearance, and this position
offers the opportunity to work with others deeply committed to making a difference.
