Trekking for your local Marie Curie Hospice,
Penarth will help us continue providing care and
quality of life for people with cancer and other
illnesses, and support for their families, completely
free.
Last year our dedicated doctors and nurses cared
for more than 600 patients at a cost of over
£3.9 million. This care would not be possible
without the support of our trekkers.

Day 1
London – Peru
We depart the UK on our overnight flight to
Peru.
Day 2
Lima – Cusco
We arrive in Lima this morning and take an
internal flight to the beautiful city of Cusco
(3,300 miles). We have the rest of the day
free to relax, followed by a welcome meal and
briefing with our guides.
Day 3
Cusco – 8km/4 hours’ trekking
Today we have an acclimatisation walk above
Cusco to the ruins of Saksayhuaman, giving us
a good chance to accustom our bodies to the
rarefied atmosphere. The rest of the day will
be a free day to explore a little more of this
exciting city.
Day 4
Ollantaytambo – 10km/5 hours’ trekking
We start today with breakfast at our hotel
before making our way to the Urubamba
River and the Sacred Valley of the Incas. We
then trek to the Pisacruins, larger than Machu
Picchu and an important settlement for the
Incas. After lunch in Yucay, we make our way
to Ollantaytambo, the only Inca town which
is still inhabited, and explore the ruins which
tower above it. We stay in this town tonight in
preparation for our early start tomorrow.
Day 5
Inca Trail – 13km/6 hours’ trekking
Up early for breakfast at our hotel before we
catch a train to Chilca, where our day begins.
We trek along the banks of the Urubamba
river until we reach the magnificent ruins of
Llactapata. Once we arrive in camp the porters
will have put up our tents and hot drinks will
be served. After enjoying an evening meal, we’ll
get an early night as the effects of altitude and
exertion will start to take their toll on us.
Day 6
Llulluchapampa Trail– 16km/7 hours’
trekking
Once again we have an early breakfast to beat
the midday heat. We climb steeply up through
fields and forests along Huayllabamba to
Llulluchapampa; over 3,600 metres. The camp
setting has magnificent views of surrounding
peaks and ruins as we settle into camp for the
night.
Day 7
Phuyupatamarca – 21km/8 -9 hours’
trekking
This is a tough day as we have two high
passes to climb. This morning, after an almost
constant climb from Wayllabamba, we arrive
at ‘Dead Woman’s Pass’ (4,270 metres). From
here we descend to Pacamayo before climbing
to our second pass which follows a beautiful
Inca path down to the ridge-top ruins of
Sayaqmarka. Camp is along the ridge-top trail
to Phuyupatamarca, overlooking the Urubamba
River far below.

Day 8
Machu Picchu – 9.5km/3 hours’ trekking
As we have risen early today we should be in
time to see the sun lighting up the magnificent
Machu Picchu ruins from the ‘Inti Punku’
or ‘Door of the Sun’. From here it is a short
descent to the world’s most famous ruins,
where we will have a guided tour. In the
afternoon we descend to the town of Aguas
Calientes and return by train to Cusco, ready
for a celebratory dinner to mark our fantastic
achievement.
Day 9
Depart Cusco
We take a morning flight to Lima and connect
with our international flight back home.
Day 10
Arrive home.

You must be 18 years old or over to take part.
The group size will be approximately 25-30
with people of all ages from all backgrounds.
The majority will be on their own, but some
will go with friends, partners or relatives.
How fit do I have to be?
This is a very strenuous and tough challenge
and you will need to train extremely hard to
succeed. All our challenges are designed to
suit people who are fit and have trained to
take part – the fitter you are the more you will
enjoy the adventure.
Will I need specialist kit?
We will send you a recommended packing list
in your welcome pack which will detail any
specialist equipment you may need.
What is not included in the package?
• Registration fee
• Recommended vaccinations
• Tips and gratuities
• Travel insurance
• Personal spending money
What food and drink will there be?
Bottled water is provided throughout the trip.
All meals are provided on the challenge and
will include lots of carbohydrates such as
pasta and potatoes along with cereals, bread,
fresh fruit, vegetables and eggs, plus some
meat. There will be vegetarian options at every
meal. Feel free to bring a few of your favourite
snacks too. Please let us know in advance of
any special dietary requirements.
* Based on minimum participant numbers.
What about vaccinations?
We recommend you seek professional
medical advice from your GP to ensure your
vaccinations are up to date.
How will I be supported?
Beforehand: You will be sent a fundraising
pack with great tips on how to meet your
sponsorship target. We will be in touch
regularly and will organise a briefing day
where you’ll meet other participants and hear
more about the challenge.
During the trip: Your group will be
accompanied by a qualified medic and trek
leader, as well as a Marie Curie Cancer Care
representative. Local guides will escort the
group along the route.
Can I cover the cost of the trip myself?
We ask you to raise a minimum of £3,750. A
minimum of £1,851* will go directly to Marie
Curie Cancer Care, as well as anything you
raise over the minimum sponsorship. If you
would like to pay for the trip yourself please
contact us on 08700 340 040 for further
information.
What will the weather be like?
The dry period is from April until October.
Cusco feels the influence of the macro-climate
created by cooling air from the southern
forest, highlands and even the distant region
of Patagonia. The winds bring humid air, blown
by the eastern tradewinds.
