Call for Nominations for three New Members
to the FSC Board of Directors
Introduction
This notice is the call for nominations for the 2012 election for three new members of the FSC Board of
Directors.
The members of the FSC Board of Directors whose term will end in 2012 are:

Call for nomination of candidates to the FSC Board of Directors
FSC calls for nomination of candidates to fill the following seats on the FSC Board of Directors:
Northern Economic
Northern Economic
Southern Economic
Candidates are requested to forward their nominations to the FSC Secretariat by May 31, 2012.
Any individual FSC member or designated representative of a member organization of the FSC may be
nominated. All nominations shall include the:
•
name of the candidate,
•
organization represented by the candidate (if applicable),
•
name and signature of the FSC member nominating the candidate, and
•
name and signature of the two FSC members seconding the nomination.
The FSC Board of Directors must have a balance between social, environmental and economic interests and its members should demonstrate this through experience, reputation and affiliation. The
members of the FSC Board of Directors represent not only their respective interest group but the FSC
as a whole. Therefore, candidates should preferably be well known and recognized for commitment to
FSC within their sector as well as the other sectors. FSC members are also asked to bear in mind the
importance of gender balance and broad geographical coverage on the FSC Board of Directors.

Potential candidates may contact the Secretariat, or current members of the FSC Board of Directors for
more information.
Forest Stewardship Council
Candidates will be requested to prepare a brief statement about themselves, their work, and their intentions in standing for election to the FSC Board. These statements will be circulated to FSC members
together with the ballot papers. Candidates will be required to complete a full 'declaration of interests', in
line with the current FSC by-law and policy on ‘Conflict of Interest’.
Every effort will be made to obtain at least two candidates for each position. The FSC Board of Directors will verify the eligibility of candidates and prepare the ballot in line with the statutory provisions
listed below.
FSC Statutory requirements:
 Candidates must either be individual members of the FSC or duly designated representatives of
member organizations (FSC By-Laws, paragraph 50).

Members that are organizations may designate as a candidate an individual other than their
current FSC representative. If elected to the FSC Board, the candidate at that point automatically becomes the FSC representative of the organization (FSC Election By-Law, 2000).

All candidates must be nominated by an FSC member. Candidates may be self-nominated
(FSC Election By-Law, 2000).

Nominations must be seconded by two FSC members (FSC By-Laws, paragraph 58 and Election By-Law, 2000).

Board members may stand for two consecutive terms (FSC By-Laws, paragraph 54).

Representatives of certification bodies and industry associations may not be represented on the
Board. (FSC By-Laws, paragraph 50).

have achieved a high level of respect and influence within the sector and region to be represented;

be knowledgeable about the forest situation in their region including; political aspects, international instruments and initiatives related to the conservation and management of forests, and
with respect to the social sectors (public, indigenous groups, workers, communities and small
operations and other major groups);

have expertise that complements existing experience on the FSC Board of Directors, in addition
to their environmental, social or economic expertise.

have experience working on an international board.

be fluent in English and/or Spanish.
