HANALEI SCHOOL Issue #7, May 2017 E KOMO MAI Mahalo Ric Cox “Sometimes you never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory”--Dr. Seuss On Thursday, April 13, 2017, we lost an important supporter of Hanalei School. Ric Cox was 72 years old and passed away due to cardiac arrest. Ric was known by all of our teachers and many parents in our PTSA because he was a passionate advocate for public education. He was a Rotarian but he also started a subsidiary of the Rotary, known as the Aloha Angels. The sole purpose of this entity was raising funds for public education, specifically to support teachers and their aspirations to enrich students beyond what schools could budget. He piloted a lot of his ideas through Hanalei and Kilauea Schools, as he had a close relationship with many of the north shore teachers. The impact of his involvement on our school is immeasurable; the Aloha Angels supported everything from classroom supplies to field trips to after school clubs and mentoring opportunities. The Garden Island wrote a beautiful tribute to Ric that is linked here: http://thegardenisland.com/lifestyles/opinion/ric-cox-really-was-anangel/article_ca242bc6-4994-5125-b9f8-8214ef276756.html I wanted to take this time to pay honor and heartfelt appreciation for Ric Cox and his devotion to Hanalei School’s teachers and studentswe love you Ric. It’s hard starting any new job but some of the specific challenges of Hanalei for me were building trust amongst our staff and building relationships with parents and the community, where I knew almost nobody. I truly appreciate all the parents, our community, and this staff for reaching out and supporting me in this challenging role. There were teachers who came in on holidays and Saturdays to work on school planning; there were dozens of parents, the Hanalei PTSA , and community members who volunteered for the HI5 Recycling Fridays, garden expansion projects, track meet coaching, or Starry Nights planning, and much more. The amount of support has been overwhelming and humbling. My title this year as the Temporarily Assigned (TA) Principal of Hanalei School for the 16-17 School Year- was a one year assignment. I have asked our Complex Area Superintendent to temporarily assign me again for the 2017-18 School Year. Before I apply for the permanent position, I want to make sure I can be successful in this role and move the school forward in morale, academics and visioning; I also want the community to understand my strengths (and weaknesses) and beliefs about education before making a decision to hire me in the full time permanent position. It is my sincere hopes to return to Hanalei School next year to continue on as part of this community. The 2017-18 School Year Academic Plan to focus on five student learning needs Over the past several months, the Hanalei School leadership team and teachers have been working on analyzing data points to identify student learning needs and areas of growth for Hanalei School. The three data points that are critical in establishing our needs are: • Self Study Report that is being prepared for WASC Accreditation next year • Reflection & Planning Alignment Document to the State Strategic Plan • The WASC Accreditation Team’s initial visit recommendations from the 2015-16 SY. Based on these sources, we identified five student learning needs; these are the driving points in Hanalei School’s 2017-2020 three-year Academic Plan. As you read through these needs, reflect about what each one will mean for your own child in terms of improving school outcomes: Need #1: Not enough students are finding their learning experiences relevant and/or engaging, thus all students need multiple and more frequent opportunities to have choice and express their voice through learning tasks aligned to the rigor of the CCSS, NGSS and C3 Frameworks. Need #2: Instruction is not meeting the needs of diverse learners, so ALL students require instruction that is relevant, challenging and differentiated according to their actual versus perceived interests, learning styles and skill levels. Need #3: Math proficiency and growth for all students is lower than our ELA proficiency and growth, thus all students need to improve their math skills and concepts through instructional experiences aligned to the rigor of the CCSS including the Standards of Mathematical Practices. 2 1 2 Academic Plan ~ Continued Need #4: Accountability for behavioral expectations are not consistent across all settings (ie. classroom, playground, cafeteria, enrichment etc.) which is impacting the learning environment, so there is a need for more clear and consistent behavioral expectations for all students and stronger character development education. Need #5: Not enough students are attending school on a consistent basis which is impacting student achievement and growth so there is a need to ensure that all students engage fully in the educational opportunities afforded to them on a daily basis, and regularly attend school. Island wide mayor’s Youth track meet The Mayor’s Annual Track Meet was held on April 8th & 9th at Vidinha Stadium. This was the first year in quite a few years that Hanalei School participated. Students competed in a variety of events ranging from 50 to 400 Meter Dashes, 400 Meter Relay, Standing Broad Jump, and Softball Throw. Student participants ranged in age from Kindergarten to 6th Grade, they practiced for a few weeks here at school before the meet. All students had a fantastic experience. We look forward to this fun event next year. Mahalo to our parent volunteers who helped with practices and made it possible for Hanalei to compete: Scott Parker, Kari Derr, Jamie Debonet, Neil Dana and Keith Matie. And, thank you to the PTSA for providing school tshirts. 3 School Attendance and 2017-18 HI DOE School Calendar As noted above, regular school attendance is student learning need #5 in Hanalei School’s Academic Plan. With that said, parents, please look at the school calendar for next year (attached here and also found on our website). Please plan family vacations in conjunction with school vacation periods. Hawaii has a short school day and a shorter school year compared to most states. With limited instructional time to begin with, teachers are working hard to make the most of the instructional time they have. Please support us in reaching this goal by aligning your family vacations with the school year calendar. Thank you in advance for your effort. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,State,of,Hawaii,–,Department,of,Education,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,2017/2018,,OFFICIAL,SCHOOL,CALENDAR,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Teachers',Work,Year=B=1st=Semester:=August=1,=2017=B=January=5,=2018;=2nd=Semester:=January=8,=2018=B=June=1,=2018 Students',Work,Year=B=1st=Semester:=August=7,=2017=B=December=21,=2017;=2nd=Semester:=January=8,=2018=B=May=31,=2018 Week 1 2 Student Teacher Days Days 0 0 0 4 5 9 3 9 13 4 14 18 5 19 23 6 23 27 7 28 32 8 33 37 9 38 42 10 43 47 12 48 52 13 53 57 14 58 62 15 62 66 16 67 71 17 70 74 18 75 79 19 80 84 20 85 89 21 89 93 11 22 23 94 24 94 99 25 98 103 26 103 108 27 108 113 28 113 118 29 117 123 30 121 127 31 126 132 32 131 137 33 136 142 35 139 145 36 144 150 37 149 155 38 154 160 39 159 165 40 164 170 41 169 175 42 174 180 43 179 44 182 189 B2^ +1^^ 180 190 ! Thanks to everyone in the Hanalei School community who worked so hard to make this year’s Starry Nights fundraiser a success. We raised over $62,000 in support of our enrichment program and expansion of the school garden and nutrition education program. The live auction and classroom projects were particularly successful this year, raising a total of $19000! So many people contributed to making Starry Nights 2017 a great event for our whole community, who enjoyed an evening of music, dancing and fun with our live band, incredible DJ and exciting live auction. Even the students got to join in the Starry Nights party this year when the Soft White Sixties played a short concert in the Cafeteria for the kids on Friday the 7th. Final PTSA General Membership Meeting: The final PTSA meeting is on May 2nd at 2:15pm in Noelle McHugh's classroom.
