UW Botanic Gardens Summer Scavenger Hunt 2013 Follow the directions to each of the clues. When you get to a Clue, look for the special letter in the name of the animal. Take the letter and put in in the corresponding blank to get the answer to the riddle. Note for parents/guardians: Ground‐nesting bees like hornets are very active this time of year in the Arboretum. In general, trails, turf and pavement are safe to walk on. The clues are located either on or very close to the trail, so you shouldn’t have to go very far off the path to find them. But please be very careful when walking off‐trail; listen for the sound of buzzing and don’t disturb any nests that you might see in the ground or in a tree. What do you get when you cross a daisy and a dog? A _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____! Clue: 1 4 10 5 7 6 12 3 9 11 8 2 UW Botanic Gardens Summer Scavenger Hunt 2013 •Walk out of the Graham Visitors Center. Look up to your left. See a tall bluish tree on the corner past the gate? Go underneath and you will find the first clue. •Walk down the hill, past the stop sign. Remember to look both ways before crossing the street! Follow the gravel path. The next clue is on a path to the left on an overlook of the water. This is Duck Bay. Can you see why it is called that? •Return to the main path and continue past a bench on the right, then over a bridge. You will see an alder tree on your right with low branches. Clue #3 is on one of those branches. •Follow the path straight, past birch trees on left and right. Look for a slanted, twisty pine tree (with needles) on your left. The next clue is hidden on a branch. •Go back to the path, and follow it. The 5th clue is hidden on a tree on the left with tiny toothed leaves. Why do you think trees have different leaves? •Stay on the main trail. You will pass a pine tree on the left, and you can hear cars here! Keep going down, past a fence and the highway on the right. Go under the bridge through a tunnel with lots of paint. Keep going! You will see a tree on your right with many smooth trunks, which is where your next clue is. •Go back to the path and go straight at the fork towards water and a picnic table. Before you get there, look to your right and see a group of 3 trees. Check the left one for the 7th clue. •If you want to, check out the water but be warned, the next clue will be behind you! Take the right fork toward a big rock next to a tree with smooth green leaves. The 8th clue is on this tree. •Follow the path to a sign for the Arboretum Waterfront Trail. Go down that trail. There will be many different types of plants. How many can you count? Next clue is on the left on a bush with green trunks near some purple flowers. •Continue on the path and when you see a fork, go right past some reeds to an observation platform. Can you observe any animals? The clue is next to the bench on the railing. •Turn around and go back to the path and turn right at the intersection. Keep going through some bushes. It’s a little muddy! Look for a wooden fence, and the 11th clue is above it in the bushes. •Onto the final clue! You are almost there! Keep going on the path, do you see the boardwalk? The final clue is at the beginning on the left railing. YOU MADE IT!!! Now you have all the clues and can figure out the answer to the riddle. If you want, you can explore the boardwalk, but if you want to head home, just follow the path back the way you came. Since you learned so much about animals, can you find any on your way back? Look for ducks, dragonflies, turtles, spiders or garter snakes. If you keep your eyes peeled and look up you might even see an owl or bald eagle. See how many animals (or signs of animals, like tracks or calls) you can see or hear on the way back!
