It must’ve been awful, yet the gospel writers men+on it only in passing, it seems. Here’s Mark’s account: “. . . and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified” (Mark 15:15b). His descrip+on leaves me wan+ng more. He was scourged? What does that mean? How bad was it? Mark’s readers probably needed no explana+on; they knew what he meant. But we’ve never seen anything like the flogging Jesus endured. Here are some brief descrip+ons of what scholars think a scourging was like. Before you take the Lord’s Supper today, take a few minutes and think about what Jesus went through. “Flogging was not a light punishment. The Romans first stripped the person and <ed his hands to a post above his head. The whip, some<mes called a ‘cat of nine tails,’ was made of several pieces of leather with pieces of bone and lead embedded near the ends of the leather strips. Two men, one on each side of the criminal, did the flogging. The Jews limited the number of hits (stripes) a person could receive, usually no more than thirty-nine. The Romans had no limit. Flogging ripped out chunks of flesh and oAen leA the bones of the vic<m exposed. Some vic<ms did not survive a flogging” (R.L. Cooper, Holman). “Flogging was both a preliminary to crucifixion (perhaps to hasten death) and an independent punishment. It was a Roman punishment and must be dis<nguished from the much milder synagogue bea<ngs of forty lashes less one. Bits of metal, bone, or glass were imbedded in leather thongs; and the flesh of the vic<m was shredded, some<mes un<l bones or entrails appeared. Flogging was some<mes fatal” (J.A. Brooks, NAC). “But before Jesus is given over to their custody, the governor has him scourged, which apparently was standard pre-crucifixion procedure. Scourging was done with a whip made up of several leather straps to which were aached sharp, abrasive items, such as nails, glass, or rocks. Scourging resulted in the severe lacera<on of the skin and damage to the flesh beneath (e.g., Josephus: ‘flayed to the bone with scourges’)” (C.A. Evans, WBC). It’s scary to think about how painful this must’ve been. Take a few minutes and thank him. —Chuck Page 2 Worship Assignments Welcome: Paul Williams, Jr. Song Leaders: AM: Kyle Wadley PM: Wes Blankenship Scripture Reading: Darren Hicks Prayer Leaders: AM Opening: Glenn Till, Jr. AM Closing: Marc Shelton Communion Table Head: Adam Mowrer Servers: Jason Blakemore Mike Clelland John Cuellar Nolan Williams Josh Shelton Norman Rutland MaFhew Trousdale Will Brooks Alternates: Steve Mar+n / Daniel Warren Today Youth The Adult Winter Quarter Bible Classes start today. Page 3 Courage Courage is needed if the church is to meet the challenges it faces. Peter informs Chris+ans that they are to add virtue to their faith (2 Peter 1:5). According to Barnes Notes, the common meaning of the Greek word for virtue is: “as referring to manliness, courage, vigor, energy; and the sense is that he wished them to evince whatever firmness of courage might be necessary in maintaining the principles of their religion, and in enduring the trials to which their faith might be subjected.” Don’t you want to be tougher spiritually? Wouldn’t you like to be courageous for Christ? In 2 Timothy, Paul, the aged servant of God, instructed the young evangelist to “preach the word” (2 Tim. 4:2), “endure afflic+ons” (4:5), “endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ” (2:3), and “flee also youthful lusts” (2:22). Timothy is being called upon to live courageously—to stand up and be a hero! How is courage developed? Mary Tyler Moore is quoted as saying, “Pain nourishes courage. You can’t be brave if you’ve only had wonderful things happen to you.” Courage is exemplified in the face of opposi+on, danger, and stress. Our courage is bolstered when we remember what Paul wrote to the Philippians. He said, “I can do all things through Christ which strengthened me” (Phil. 4:13). This passage calls for courageousness. ATtudes must oCen be changed if the Chris+an life is to be lived courageously. Courage demands a mindset that says, “nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will” (MaFhew 26:39). —Demar Elam Carelines Remember our shut-ins with your prayers, visits, and cards: Jeff Nabors, Nixie Lolley, and Rowena English.
